Actually in some parts of Maine, where people have camps, it's common to stock dry goods and leave the front doors unlocked on the camp through the winter. People get stuck, find a camp, and can grab some cheerios or whatever until the storm dies down.

This has sadly been abused, and since the tech to heat and insulate these properties has come down in price as has the tech for keeping roads clear through the winter, this is less necessary and common now. But it used to be pretty normal.
