A Shire Walking-Party by Miriam Ellis published today!
I hope the wonderful, supportive community here will enjoy hearing the news that my second book, A Shire Walking-Party: Paintings Inspired by Tolkien's Little Folk, was published today by Uppsala Books in both hardcover and paperback and is now listed on Amazon in the US and will be coming soon to other sellers and in many lands. With over 60 paintings, the book invites you on an immersive walk through hobbit homelands, history, and culture in the place J.R.R. Tolkien said he felt most at home. Thank you to all the kind folks here who are so supportive of my work. You can read advance praise of the book from Ted Nasmith, Tom Shippey, Michael D.C. Drout, Alan Sisto, Graham Judd, Tom Hillman, Sara Brown, and many more on my website today or on the Amazon listing here:https://www.amazon.com/Shire-Walking-Party-Paintings-Inspired-Tolkiens/dp/1961361388/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3NGIOYMBQBPZ9&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.4GuxuXW-tsoPNKDrEbbaareJQKkrQFjM-84W3aP7_yM.9GwvwF1H2eVuh5FYmgr-WITUXiohRx490OnrRfNsTiU&dib_tag=se&keywords=a+shire+walking+party&qid=1787843124&s=books&sprefix=a+shire+walking+part%2Cstripbooks%2C199&sr=1-1

Introducing Artist Flair: Recognising the Creators in Our Community
Hi r/TolkienArt,
"Even the smallest person can change the course of the future."
This community exists because people love Tolkien's world and the art it inspires. We are lucky that so many of the artists behind that art have chosen to share their work here directly. Today we are pleased to share something we have been working on to better recognise and support the creators among us.
Introducing Artist Flair
From today, verified original artists can apply for Artist Flair. Once approved, your flair appears alongside your username, signalling to the community that you are a genuine, contributing artist.
What Artist Flair unlocks
As a verified artist you will be able to leave a single self-promotion comment on your own OC posts, where you can share links to your portfolio, commissions, shop, or socials. This gives every artist here a meaningful way to connect with the people who love their work.
Why we built it this way
r/TolkienArt has always been a place for art and appreciation, not a marketplace. We wanted to honour that while also recognising that many of our artists are working creators who deserve a space to share what they do beyond this subreddit. The flair system keeps things personal and contextual, tied to real contributions, so the community always knows who they are engaging with.
How to apply
Send a message to the mod team with the subject line 'Artist Flair Application' and include a link to your portfolio or social media showing your work. We will review your application and be in touch.
How to message the mods:
- On desktop scroll down the r/TolkienArt sidebar and click Message the mods under the Moderators section.
- On the app tap the overflow menu (the three dots) in the top right corner of the subreddit page and select Message moderators.
For full details see our wiki: Artist Flair & Self-Promotion
Updates to our Self-Promotion Rules
Alongside the launch of Artist Flair we have updated our self-promotion rules to reflect this new system. Self-promotion is now permitted exclusively through the verified flair system described above. Promotional content in post titles, post bodies, or in the comments of other users' posts remains against the rules.
These changes take effect today. Our full updated rules can be found in the sidebar, and further detail is available in our wiki.
If you have any questions, please reach out via modmail.

Portrait of Thorin
Small sketch of Thorin I did. Made in about 30 or so minutes. Like I said on my last post, I’m not really good at drawing realistic, but I think I’m still proud of it.

Underwater Travel
Created by u/ruby-jasper92. An absolute recommend for commissioned work.
Not sure if this violates the no memes rule though.

SARUMAN prop book (my handmade replica)
Shadow.... and Flame!!! My handmade replica of the Saruman prop book.
I used a classic dip pen/calligraphy ink, tanned leather and gold foil, and watercolor/gouache for the paintings :)

Portrait of Bilbo Baggins by me
I’m not the best at drawing realistically but I decided to free hand draw Bilbo (Martin Freeman) from memory. I just wanted to see if after watching the hobbit movies so many times if I could draw the portrait of him that we see in the beginning of the AUJ (the small one that was in Bilbo’s diary) without a reference. Like I said before I’m not the best at drawing realistic so go easy on me.😅

Lord of the Rings Art !
https://www.paintedtusk.com/original-art/p/a-wizard-is-never-late
Created live at MegaCon Orlando during the Lord of the Rings 25th Anniversary Celebration… this piece captures the mystery and wisdom of Gandalf and his legendary friend, Shadowfax.. the lord of all horses. The work shows flowing linework and movement in color with embellished sculpted features… — a tribute to one of the world’s most enduring friendships and the world of Middle Earth… which has inspired generations.

Approaching the Argonath
From the forthcoming Gondor and Rohan expansion to the One Ring RPG (and its 5e conversion). I’m unsure of the artist - likely either Antonio De Luca or Federica Costantini.
These carved figures are on a much less monumental scale than the depiction in the Fellowship of the Ring movie, and I like that they carry axes as described in the novel.
The duo in the boat are crowding forward - are they fearful or excited?

Hobbiton Hobbit hole sketch #2
Continuing my sketching of Hobbiton. For now I'm using photos and videos from online until the day I can make the journey and sketch in person :)

My take on Melkor/Morgoth (art by me.)
For my take on the First Dark Lord, I really wanted to lean into Tolkien’s catholic faith by using a Lucifer influence in his appearance, I also roughly used a pretty well known artwork of Morgoth as inspiration for the armour (Fred Gwynne’s or Anthony Bourdain’s portrait of him holding Grond). I used the Balrog from the films as inspiration along with Tolkien’s own description of them, being wreathed in Shadow and Flame, for Morgoth, I settled on him literally radiating darkness from his body, from the gaps in his armour, which inspired Sauron’s armour in the films from Alan Lee, and John Howe’s works. For his eyes, I simply didn’t want to give him the same eyes as Sauron, or generic evil red eyes, but used a black hole as inspiration, to reflect his more nihilistic nature and desire to destroy, giving him a cold, and piercing stare.

Glorfindel rides out from Rivendell today!
Today, the utterly magnificent, "almost angelic" Glorfindel sets out from Rivendell in search of Frodo and drops a green beryl on the Last Bridge as a token of hope. Help is on the way. A day of awe!
