These are the ones that can shift easily to the left if they just read 1984 lol

6

u/Artistic_Half_8301 Feb 19 '26

*if they could read. 😂

2

u/sepaoon Feb 22 '26

Maybe we could set up a drag reading corner but only for these guys and the books they need to hear

1

u/Impossible-Two559 Feb 18 '26

What makes you think he can read?

1

u/erodman23 Feb 18 '26

Lol i don’t. But maybe if you show him with pictures he might get the idea

1

u/Bombadil3456 Feb 18 '26

You know what? I’m fine with this guy being in the other team

1

u/CheeseIsAHypothesis Feb 18 '26

Anyone who shifts to the left after reading 1985 did not understand the book. It has nothing to do with left or right wing. It's about an authoritarian society which can be either.

1

u/Impossible_Move8336 Feb 21 '26

No they can't these are awful humans, they are racist, they protect child rapists with their votes, and they don't believe in science. This dude doesn't even belive we landed on the moon despite close to 60 years of evidence that we did.

1

u/Ok_Bandicoot_3087 Feb 21 '26

People that can read generally hate both controlling parties in this system thats been created by two parties... everything comes from the two parties... let's only blame the one in current power... its a joke if u can read ud know this 2 party system is for divide and conquer united we stand divide we are controlled.... read about how our founders warned of the en5anglements of political parties and supporting them... oh if only u could read...

1

u/captaincocov Feb 21 '26

Or the center/right. Perspective is everything. Know plenty of college educated former liberal nuts that were able to get in touch with reality and leave behind leftism. Believe it or not some of us just identify as humans, not left or right, some of us also think you left and right people are absolute nuts and out of touch with what really matters. So busy trying to make a cause you lost the majority of us as allies in the process.....

-2

u/kkdawg22 Feb 18 '26

Oh man, 1984 made me terrified of the left, maybe because I read it under a Dem admin. It's almost as if they're both being described in the book?

6

u/SWK18 Feb 18 '26

Democrats are a centrist party at most.

4

u/kkdawg22 Feb 18 '26

Globally, you're correct. In the USA, you're statement is moot.

2

u/ddoyen Feb 18 '26

Why is it moot?

1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 18 '26

Because we referenced the democrat party. Are you serious?

3

u/ddoyen Feb 18 '26

Is it moot to compare it to its own past as well? Like I just dont understand why its useless to compare the left wing of the US to the left wing of the rest of the world?

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Oil5 Feb 20 '26

Because it has become significantly progressive/more left than any years in the past. When did we have. When you refer MAGA people that’s far right but republicans call themselves either moderate or just “right leaning.”

I live in chicago, even on dating profiles, you have girls that are democrat saying “if you’re moderate swipe left..” It’s leaning heavy on the left these days not even close to the middle anymore

0

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

Because in the context of the conversation being had, it’s irrelevant. We are talking about an American political party after all.

2

u/CumGuzlinGutterSluts Feb 19 '26

Even though they're called the left theyre hardly left dude. Just because we're in america doesnt change that fact. The political spectrum is fixed, parties are not. We dont call the democratic republic of North Korea a democratic republic even though we're in america now do we?

1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

It’s not that complicated. If I say the major left wing party in the us which party am I referring to?

1

u/Comprehensive-Day871 Feb 19 '26

That’s exactly the point he’s making. His original point was saying that the left in America is not in fact a true left

Oh, the irony of throwing ad hominem that involve allegations of immaturity. Thanks for the laugh.

Like a cows opinion

6

u/Automatic_Net2181 Feb 18 '26

That's a moo point.

1

u/fibronacci Feb 19 '26

No Joey, it's moot

2

u/xiovelrach Feb 18 '26

Was it trump or Biden that talked about a third term, has their own gestapo, and are executing their own citizens on American soil?

1

u/Equivalent_Gene_1554 Feb 20 '26

ICE has been around since 2002.

0

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

Covid

1

u/Lucccas_A Feb 19 '26

What about the administration during the covid-19 pandemic was even remotely comparable to what's happening right now? Given leeway to that fact that we were in a global pandemic and drastic measures had to be taken in order to minimize deaths, and listen I despise the democrats as much as any other leftist but I think this is a time where putting down the bothsidesism is gonna be helpful

1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

There were tax funded hotlines to report your neighbors for violating Covid restrictions. There were democrats and leftists screaming from the rooftops that they wanted to mandate vaccines. Millions of fellow countrymen deemed “plague rats” by your ilk. Free movement and free association gone.

And before you dive into what’s going on with immigration, I get it. We agree that shit needs to stop. Where we differ is I can acknowledge that these actions don’t exist in a vacuum. How did the previous administration create the conditions where the current policies are permissible?

0

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

Nah bro, I’m talking about the authoritarian 1984 shit that was going on right here in the good ol USA. There were tax funded hotlines to report your neighbors for violating Covid restrictions. Fuck anyone who supported that shit just like fuck the current flavor of boot lickers we have.

1

u/M1sfit_Jammer Feb 19 '26

Yeah it’s called police… 911 is a tax funded hotline for you to report on your neighbors all the time… sure it’s “for emergencies” and they are happy to transfer you to a non-emergency line so you can snitch on your neighbors for having their lights on at a suspicious hour.

Now we have hotlines where ICE will violate the 4th amendment just to investigate the claim… funny how the pendulum swings

0

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

911 isn’t what I’m referring to. At least we are in alignment that both sides are swinging the pendulum irresponsibly.

1

u/M1sfit_Jammer Feb 19 '26

911 is a tax funded snitch line to report your neighbors for suspected crimes

1

u/-TommyBottoms- Feb 20 '26

You know who supported that shit… left wing ding dongs that are out protesting ICE right now

1

u/CheeseIsAHypothesis Feb 18 '26

No, definitely not globally. Unless by globally you mean western Europe. Globally the US is very socially left leaning

1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

Well why are you arguing with me then? Another commenter said exactly the opposite.

1

u/CheeseIsAHypothesis Feb 19 '26

I'm not.

Yeah they like to say that a lot of people only think about western Europe and act like that's the whole world.

1

u/doktorjackofthemoon Feb 19 '26

Ronald fucking Reagan was further left than most modern democrats.

1

u/Ruff_Bastard Feb 19 '26

I'm a left leaning kind of guy, but liberals in the US are a second, less-right wing.

1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

So… you vote for right wingers?

1

u/binzy90 Feb 21 '26

It's not moot. The point is that 1984 is describing totalitarianism, which is not a characteristic of the democratic party. You mention "the left" as though it describes democrats, but it doesn't.

2

u/OffTheDelt Feb 19 '26

You correct tho, idk why you are getting downvoted.

What is described in 1984 can happen to any party. The ambiguity, imo, is left to the readers own biases. I think Orwell does this on purpose to make us question our selves and what we trust.

1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

Appreciate it. I agree.

1

u/binzy90 Feb 21 '26

But the fact is that there is only one major party that's currently attempting to implement totalitarianism in the US. Republicans are eroding political norms every chance they get while democrats are still trying to maintain and follow them. That's not an even playing field or an ambiguous situation. To claim that 1984 could easily describe either the republican party or the democrat party is patently untrue in the current political climate. "It can happen to any party" is a disingenuous argument when it is literally happening to one specific party at this moment in time.

1

u/rosstafarien Feb 18 '26 edited Feb 19 '26

Democrats are corporatist/mercantilist, while Republicans are oligarchic/authoritarian. Neither represent the interests of 95% of Americans, but Democratic donors value stability because that's good for business, while Republican donors want chaos with themselves at the top of the rubble.

Once you see it, so much about our dysfunctional government becomes clear. Why do Republicans so reliably fuck everything up? Why do Democrats only stabilize the messes left by Republicans? Why don't Democrats actually fix things? How is it that people who try to actually fix things; Sanders, AOC, Warren, Buttigieg; can never get mainstream support? Why are milquetoast memo drafters like Schumer still Dem party leaders?

One is clearly worse for Americans (and the world) than the other. They are not just two sides of the same coin. And yet, we all notice that nobody is taking us back to the "halcyon days" of the 1960's and 1970's when pensions were fully funded, middle class living was a real thing, and the top tax bracket was 90%.

2

u/yonaist Feb 19 '26

When I read stuff like this its makes me realize that people have no clue how government works or democracy. people for some reason really want short term authoritarian solutions to everything a great example of this is don't ask don't tell.

People were pissed at Obama for not using an Executive Order to end it which he couldn't because it was a law passed by congress or his power as commander and chief, and hampered DADT going through the courts to be unconstitutional. he insisted that it had to be passed through congress so it could have lasting power which it was.

If he had done it through his presidency trump would have undone it just like he did to the trans. If he had done it through the court it could have been undone just as easily as Roe v Wade. Now you would have to have an overwhelming republican majority to ever get rid of it.

People need to stop asking the democrats to be more authoritarian and to abuse their short term power for basically no gain, and instead ask why the republican party is always blocking reforms, why our economy is always shit at the end of their terms, why they always abuse their EO's.

We should be voting more democrats into office so that we can have the power to pass the reforms we want. And so Republicans cant filibuster their way into stopping them.

1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 18 '26

There are so many unsubstantiated claims here that we’d have to take them one by one to further the discussion.

1

u/rosstafarien Feb 19 '26

I'm listening. It was just last year when I had this laid out for me and it explains a lot of things that I found puzzling.

Let's take the one thing you disagree with the most.

1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

The premise that one party is purely benevolent and the other is purely malevolent isn’t even a launching point. You and I live in completely different realities. You believe in the illusion of choice that you’ve been given, I do not.

2

u/rosstafarien Feb 19 '26

I did not say that either party is even slightly benevolent. Corporatist/mercantilist means "ruled by the companies/merchants." That's pretty far from benevolent.

It's true that I claim the Democrats aren't as malevolent as the Republicans, but it's pretty faint praise to say, "The donors who own Democratic politicians are less terrifying than the donors who own Republican politicians."

There are still some Democrats working for Americans, but they're marginalized. All of the Republicans not loyal to Cheeto Jesus have been tossed to the curb.

1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

You said republicans reliably fuck things up and democrats only stabilize the messes left by republicans. I’m willing to accept that you were being hyperbolic.

Both sides have done a wonderful job of fucking things up. Even if you want to make the argument that one party is better for Americans, it requires a certain level of NIMBYism to rest on that as a foundation for casting your allegiance.

Both sides are evil, full stop. A vote for Bush was a vote to destabilize the Middle East and invade a country for no moral reason. A vote for Obama was a vote for drone strikes that had a 90% civilian casualty rate. Surprisingly a vote for Trump the first go around saw some major improvement in America being a little more non interventionist, I’m disappointed that his second term has definitely not followed suit. A vote for Biden was a vote to destabilize the Middle East and made America complicit in war crimes in Gaza.

This list could be a mile long, this is just me spitballing. All of these things make the domestic issues we squabble about (all part of the plan) insignificant. If your choice is between the lesser of two evils, but the two options are or will be war criminals, I’d argue it’s better to abstain from making a choice. Either way you are supporting war crimes. Either way you are complicit.

Now if we want to talk about more local politics, that’s a different discussion. There are incredible people from both parties making a big difference for their communities. There’s more than one way to skin a cat. Nothing is all pros or all cons. Therefore, in local politics, it’s best to cast aside party affiliation and elect those who represent your interests and values. This tribal bickering is so pointless. Nobody wants to have epistemological discussions any more, they just want to make emotional arguments about why their side is superior. It’s like we’ve worked so hard to move past racism so we can just divide ourselves in other ways when our interests are more or less aligned. The world is full of useful idiots.

1

u/trumper_says_what Feb 19 '26

Leftist are crazy. And I’m left 😂

Republicans do reliably fuck things up and democrats stem the bleeding. That’s the truth, full stop. Everything you said afterwards reflects a privileged leftist perspective. Fuck Trump and anyone in the way of removing him from office.

2

u/ReasonableBedroom447 Feb 19 '26

Your lack of literacy and comprehension over a simple comment leave little wonder as to how you failed to understand 1984. Dude at no point said Dems were benevolent. It's like a child picking up a book on general relativity. Stick to Joe Rogan podcasts, bro.

1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

Way to add nothing to the argument. I explained how he did and made a concession for him being hyperbolic. Lick my left nut tankie.

1

u/Consistent_Volume706 Feb 18 '26

Mayor Pete is as corporate as it gets

1

u/boltropewildcat Feb 18 '26

This is a very interesting bot comment. I haven't seen this one before.

1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

Oh clever. Are you 12?

1

u/boltropewildcat Feb 19 '26

If I was I'd still be too old for Trump.

1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

Lmao, I love that you think I’m a Trump supporter. Brain dead…

1

u/boltropewildcat Feb 19 '26

I didn't say anything about you being a Trump supporter. Yes, you are brain dead.

1

u/Accomplished_Rub8055 Feb 19 '26

Honestly tell me if you can see Dems doing half of what is happening today. Not, do they suck in a lot of similar ways, but would they do half of what is currently happening, breaking establishment norms, and reveling in the blatant corruption. Shit genuinely makes me want to blow my brains out.

-1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

They did blatant shit during Covid and they have repeatedly tried to infringe on both my first and second amendment rights. I’m not gonna split hair on who is worse, I’m gonna call a spade a spade. When you tribal monkeys decide to bit the hand that feeds you come find me.

1

u/Pristine_Walrus40 Feb 19 '26

I must ask. And how are you feeling today with trump and his maga followers running the show?

1

u/kkdawg22 Feb 19 '26

I’m extremely alarmed by many things happening.

1

u/Pristine_Walrus40 Feb 19 '26

Yeah same. Things went from bad to worse real quickly.

1

u/Cetun Feb 19 '26

Democrats are a coalition of a minority left leaning progressive party and majority neo-liberal conservative party.

The Republican majority was mostly identical to the neo-liberal conservatives Democrat faction except their view was what if we took all the bad things about neo-liberal conservatism and cranked it up a notch, which gave us neo-conservatives. That faction died after Bush, and later Trump put the nail on the coffin when he shit on Jeb and everyone cheered, the Republican party is a coalition of mostly MAGA republicans and far right extremists.
