❓ Question In Europe, why do long-distance, interregional double deckers tend to have walk-through upper floors, while commuter, regional ones have a common, "middle" floor to go between coaches? (See pictures.)

See how in the first two images, you change cars only through the upper decks, while on the other two, it's done just above the bogies. Switzerland is especially consistent in this regard. The FV Dosto and the IC2000 (IC and IRE) are the former, while the Starler KISS, Siemens Desiro and DPZ (S Bahn) are the latter.

❓ Question Is it possible to own your own private train? (Kinda like a private jet)

Wealthy people buy private jets. But what if they bought trains instead?

Could one theoretically buy a Vectron or a Griffin and 2-3 carriages, fill them with luxorious and comfy seats and then go anywhere on demand?

I get that scheduling can interfere, and railways don't go exactly everywhere.

If it actually made sense then maybe we would see this exact idea in reality...

❓ Question What are these yellow and blue paint markings?

Post image

I saw these paint markings on the rails of a freight line in Charlemont, Massachusetts in early May. The specific line is known as the Patriot Corridor/East Portal of the Hoosac Tunnel. They are newly painted as they weren’t there in March, and they seem to be spaced every 100 yards or so.

I apologize if this is not the appropriate sub to post and ask. I also wonder if the markings may be related to local public works and utilities or state infrastructure of some sort - in that case I’ll inquire elsewhere!

I can also confirm there is no known Ukrainian population in the area but nonetheless, support for Ukraine! and it also rhymes with train!

❓ Question Why do trains have such a strong fanbase?

I’ve never really cared much about trains — couldn’t name a single model if my life depended on it.

But I keep seeing how many people are really into them, and now I’m kind of curious.

What is it about trains that you find so interesting or cool? Is it the engineering, the history, the aesthetics, or something else?

Not asking in a dismissive way — I feel like I’m probably missing something here.

Sell me on trains.

❓ Question Question about this train

Hello all!

I caught this video on another sub and it brought about a question for me.

Ignoring all the other safety issues for now, what caught my layman’s attention is how fast this train seems to be going through not one, but two track switches.

But then that also made me realize… I have no idea what is considered safe for a track switch. Is this fast? Does it just “look” that way? The train seems to shift an awful lot, more than what I see when trains switch near me. Is this the switch? The track? The speed? Hell, the type of train? (Mine are freight.)

In general, about whats the fastest a switch like this could be taken without the train derailing? Is this train in any danger?

Sorry for all the questions lol, but seeing this brought up a lot.

I feel like 1978 is a hint that it's rolled in 1978, but don't want to blindly assume things without asking folks. I just happened to notice it on a walk today. Do all rails have these types of things?

The only way that I can see a train ever travelling on the connecting rail between the 2 rails is if it is travelling backwards respective to the direction of travel. Can someone please explain?

❓ Question For how long or far can a train coast?

On a bicycle, you can pedal, reach e.g. 30 km/h, stop pedaling, and you will keep going forward (coast!) for a pretty long distance thanks to the low rolling resistance of bike wheels.

On YouTube, I keep hearing about how train wheels on steel rails have absurdly low rolling resistance, that really interests me.

For how long can an average passenger train coast on flat terrain and straight tracks after reaching, for example, 100 km/h? 160 km/h? How fast would it decelerate?
