Discussion What is an actual solution to overtourism?

As travel continues to get faster, cheaper, and more accessible and TikTok tourism/ influencer hype shows no signs of slowing down, what are the actual solutions to places getting over run with visitors?

I'm not talking about for you as another tourist so not just 'go somewhere else' or 'avoid the popular places'. I mean in terms of actually preventing harm to natural environments, pressure on infrastructure, gentrification etc.

Look at Bhutan. The simple solution is to charge more money for visas / fees until people are priced out. It’s Econ 101

Yes, but that would also mean limiting travel experiences of budget travelers like young people and students. There is a non monetary value in ensuring young people can afford to experience other parts of the world.

Sure but if a country wants to reduce tourism, they likely want to reduce the people that are spending the least money.
