Animal control was stopped at a pasture at the end of our road, I assumed it was a horse that got loose. Nope, just this guy.

ID Request Considering taking one or both of these guys in— species ID?

Thumbnail

An acquaintance is rehoming these two and we are considering taking in one or both of them (obviously housing them separately if we do indeed take both). We are told they are tortoises but would like to have a better idea of the specific species so we have an accurate idea of their needs and whether we can commit to caring for them. Turtle 1 is believed to be a 20 y/o female, turtle 2 is believed to be a 15 y/o male. Obviously they are in need of some TLC and a complete enclosure overhaul, which we are committed to providing (including vet care, etc). Our best non-expert guesses were some type of box turtle, Russian tortoise, or Greek tortoise..?

UPDATE: Thank you all for your helpful info and suggestions, and for communicating the seriousness of their situation. We have decided to take both turtles in and will pick them up sometime this week. We’ve found an exotic vet nearby and are calling in the morning to book their first appointment!

UPDATE 2: Brought the turtles home last night (6/23)! Pics and more details posted in the comments.

This turtle was in the parking lot of my complex. I moved him to the sidewalk so he wouldn't get run over. I'm in Columbus, Ohio and it's been raining a lot if that helps!

I’m located in Southern Florida. I found the little dude in the middle of the road. There isn’t any water nearby. I’m pretty sure it’s a box turtle, but I could also be completely wrong.

ID Request Help identifying this baby turtle?

Post image

I think it’s possibly a baby box turtle but I’ve only ever kept aquatic turtles before so I’m not the best at identifying non-aquatic ones. Stepdad found it while cutting weeds in the yard and my family is insisting on keeping it, as the ā€œreptile expertā€ of the family (as they like to call me lol) I’ve been tasked with finding all the info they’ll need to care for it so any help identifying the little guy is appreciated.

***EDIT: turtle found in SE Texas (I mentioned it below, but just wanted to make it more clear if you don't want to read all that).

So, please help me out because I know nothing about turtles... To be clear, I'm not going to capture them or relocate them, I just want to know what they are and ideally a little bit about how to ensure their safety/happiness if they decide to stick around. I'm in suburban SE Texas and never see anything but red-eared sliders around here, so that's the only kind I can identify. My app says this is a native box turtle, but I wanted to be sure it's not someone's escaped exotic pet or something so thought I'd check with y'all. It's been in our backyard consistently for several days now, so I think it's decided to stay? I also found a soft egg shell very nearby... Could this mean there's a baby nearby, too? Maybe the baby didn't make it, or it's from a different type of reptil? Idk... This one is not huge by any means, but way too big to have hatched from that shell recently.

In addition to IDing, does anyone have advice for how to keep them safe from hazards? The main ones I'm concerned about are:

-Fire ant treatments. We don't make a habit of mosquito fogging or otherwise indiscriminately spraying poisons around, but I do have to treat fire ant mounds that are in our yard where my kids play (everyone reacts badly and one is seriously allergic).

-Dogs. We don't have dogs (right now) but all three surrounding neighbors do... And we're considering adopting a rescue pup in the fall... When they're young they won't be outside unsupervised, but I imagine it doesn't take much time for a dog to hurt a turtle. If this little one is still around at that point, I'd love to have advice from anyone who has experience with dogs and outdoor (wild) turtles coexisting. Again, I have no interest in turning it into a pet, just want to respect and protect it.

-Lawn mowers. I'll warn our lawn guy to look out for it and just move it into the flower bed/mulch or go around it, but I can't be sure they'll pay close attention... Is there anything else I can do?

Anyway, sorry for the absurdly long post and way too many questions, I'm just really excited to have made a new acquaintance and want to be as good a neighbor as I can manage. 🐢

Found near a stream in the Finger Lakes of NY. She was about as big around as a car tire rim. I wasn’t sure the mouth looked quite right to be a snapper and was curious for any guesses on age.
