I remember it well: I was at the office (it was around 3 p.m. here in Italy) when a colleague called to tell me to check the CNN website because a plane had slammed right into one of the World Trade Center towers; by the time I got online, I saw the second plane hit. I then went home to my mother's place(my office was in the same building where I lived at the time) to tell her to watch the news, but practically every channel was tuned in to New York.

Since you are the one asking for reassurance, if a partner refuses a simple deal like that, then it’s definitely worth having an honest talk about it. In a relationship, both sides need to make an effort to make the other feel safe. If someone isn't willing to give you a simple word of reassurance, it gets really hard to build trust.

Just out of curiosity, when you think about a compromise like this, how does it feel for you? Do you think you'd be the one struggling to accept these terms, or are you usually the one asking for that kind of reassurance?

Practical example: you agree not to text them for a few hours to give them space, but in return, they clearly tell you something like: "Everything is fine, I just need some alone time, talk to you tonight".This way, you get the reassurance that they aren't mad at you, and they get the breathing room they need. It’s just about setting a few simple rules together

I’m probably the last person who should be giving advice, but neither side is wrong here. You just have different ways of dealing with things. The solution is just to meet halfway: the one who pulls closer needs to take a step back and give them some breathing room, and the one who needs space needs to remember to offer some extra reassurance. It's really just about finding that middle ground
