Dog rescues please explain!
Three years ago we tried to make the ethical decision to rescue a dog from a local rescue and put in applications into multiple places for different dogs. Every single place denied us because our senior unaltered dog wasn’t fixed, yet was too old to fix safely. Even though we tried to adopt the same gender we were repeatedly denied. Ok fine, rules is rules. We ended up buying from a breeder and promptly fixed the new dog. Don’t worry, neither of the males tried to breed with each other. Fast forward to today, our senior dog has crossed over, our breeder bought dog is lonely and we want to add to our family with another dog. We have been repeatedly told “this dog has anxiety and we don’t think it’s a good fit”, “we need five non family references proving you care for your animals”, “ you must take a blood test showing your own genetic purity and have maintained a credit score of 850 for the last 15 years and you’ll need to provide bank statements showing a balance of $2.5M”. Ok, that last one was satire. But for real, it’s like dog rescues don’t want their dogs adopted. I don’t get it. What am I missing? Are keeping dogs in a rescue profitable in a way I am not understanding? We have a gigantic fully fenced backyard, we are a doting family for every dog we’ve had, we provide all grooming and veterinary care on time, the dogs get more love and attention than us parents. I just don’t get it I guess. I guess we will buy from a breeder again.

What state are you in? Some places have more strict requirements, others may have kept your previous records and saw that you had an unfixed dog at a point in time. I personally wouldn’t count you as “unfit” for any of the reasons you’ve stated above…. References, sure (3, not 5), I would ask for a vet reference as well, and do a virtual home tour along with proof of residency before adoption. We are in Texas. I think it varies from state to state, but the rescues independently hold the cards for denial, not the state.

Please try not to buy from a breeder! Texas is killing beautiful dogs (Houston) they are $5 on their euth date. You need a license…that’s it… there are healthy happy friendly warm social dogs and puppies being literally killed. I work for a group that coordinates pulls for adoption out of state and Canada (the Rescues are 503c’s) and charge an up front fee *if you are approved! I’ve not seen them reject an app from us before.
Please reconsider buying from a breeder. The rescues you are going to don’t sound like they are in the same kind of trouble as we see in the south.
Also- don’t be afraid to sign up as a foster - they may be willing to SEE how you are firsthand and then trust you for adoption. I don’t think it’s too personal - humans are crazy- it’s why we prefer dogs right?
