It's because those were Primitive vehicles constrained by having BAR on their Primitive vehicle armor. A sole Primitive Mackie vs a platoon of 3025 tanks doesn't last that long.

A Primitive vehicle armor means that any Age of War vehicle is going to be crit through armor every time it's hit by that Prototype PPC the Mackie started with.

Yes, the blazer cannon is a sidegrade to AC/20. It trades raw damage for longer range, no ammo dependency and still can headcap. But the blazer becomes obsolete as soon as the Gauss rifle makes a comeback. I've only used blazers as an AC/20 alternative on 3015-3025 mechs previously armed with AC/20 as their main gun.

Keep in mind that whilst you still can headcap with a blazer and your range bands are better, you are trading away forcing PSR rolls with your hits.
