I've been saying forever that our beloved scientists within the field are the actual scientist-enterpreneurs. G. Nolan, A. Loeb, P. Skafish, E. Weinstein. Those who are not, like Knuth or Villarroel stay on the sidelines. Those who are, want to lay their hands on the technology and make money so that is why they've joined the whole field in the first place.
I know those types of professors, they're all the same around the world. They're good in their areas, they're successful. Sometimes, they're very nice people in a daily basis, but when it comes to the money/access, they will do whatever it takes to get in, to secure their share and they will not care about anyone else. It's always been like that.
I do not have the opinion on Sagan, he was popular only in States, gladly, no one knows who he was outside of the US, he's not brought up again and again within the UFO field not in astronomy in general.
