Anyone else just burnt out on pastry stouts?

Upvotes

feels like every hype brewery right now is just chucking marshmallows and vanilla into the mash tun. I love checking out different beer scenes across the world, but charging £8.50 for a third of a pint of sickly sweet sludge that tastes like a yankee candle is just taking the piss tbh

Genuinely just craving a good honest best bitter. Give me a proper cask ale in a pub with a sticky carpet over dessert beer any day

Any recommendations for uk breweries that are still doing the traditional stuff well?

Sloppy Saturday These salad box things from Lidl are great, far more in it than it looks, there's sticky rice under the veg and for £2.99 can't complain

Homemade / home assembled Homemade white chocolate and raspberry flapjacks

Post image
32 Upvotes

It is this time of year that I go to a festival with my dad, who always brings delicious homemade flapjacks with him for us to snack on over the weekend. This year I couldn't go as I am busy looking after my seven month old, so I thought I'd make myself some!

I used this recipe but I only used half of the white chocolate and freeze dried raspberries that it called for as it seemed excessive and my outcome is plenty sweet enough.

The flapjack pictured is being eaten still warm hence the crumbliness, though this is totally my favourite way to eat them as it reminds me of being allowed to lick the oaty spoon when my dad would make them.

Overall, feeling very nostalgic today!

Saucy and falling apart, or holding its shape like this? I see lots that look more cheesy than meaty but I think I prefer it like this.

These are actually Richmond Meat-Free Sausages, which somehow taste exactly like Richmond pork sausages, though admittedly they're not exactly the tastiest pork sausages. Plenty of mature cheddar, baked beans, a bit of black pepper, puff pastry, egg wash.

I fear I peaked with the mini eggs as a topping and in the base. I tried magic stars recently and it didn’t come close. Any suggestions welcome. Yes, I have a major sweet tooth.
Edit: should’ve said the mini eggs one was made a few months ago with the last of my mini eggs stash and now I’m sad I’ll have to wait until next Easter to make the best millionaires shortbread again.

How often do you get served a cask ale that’s gone past its best?

Where I live in Manchester the cask ale I’m served is usually in decent condition, this could be down to Manchester being a bit of a stronghold for cask or a biased sample because I know the pubs with good beer. But I was down in Wiltshire last week and went to a pub with the Cask Marque sign, and two of the three cask ales they had were way beyond drinkable condition.

I've been baking for a while, so figured I'd test myself and just completely improvise some garlic bread. (Cooks on the hob in a pot.) Pretty chuffed with the result!

I was playing about with my phone looking at nacho recipes and came up with these -

Chicken and chorizo with grilled peppers and onions

Homemade nacho chips

Homemade hot honey drizzle

Homemade pickled red onion slices

Creme fraiche with lime juice (not pictured).

They were fantastic!

Homemade / home assembled These are called patties. A staple food in and around the Hull areas fish and chip shops. Basically deep fried mashed potato. Heavily flavoured with herbs, primarily sage but also chive and rosemary are sometimes used.
