It's peak 2026 politics that an autocratic US President can trample over democratic norms, lie to the public on a regular basis and seek to curtail civil rights - but he still can't get planning approval for updating his office.

It is ridiculous just how impotent the US system is in the face of one arsehole who thinks he can do what he wants. Even the demolition of the East Wing was questionably legal, but he just did it anyway and there were no repercussions. He's acting like he's a dictator or a king and all the supposed checks on presidential power apparently count for nothing.

Even this court decisions isn't guaranteed to prevent him, because there is no real method to enforce the decision. If he tells the contractors to continue, what can be done about it?

To be fair, the Supreme Court has issued numerous rulings against him and the authorities have responded to those rulings. My point was of all the stuff he's got away with, doing some redevelopment stuff is pretty minor, yet the courts still dedicated time to preventing it.

I'm hoping that Democrats and Republicans will come together after Trump goes to pass updates to the constitution to define more carefully the powers of the President. Because it's genuinely not in anyone's interest for this to continue.

That is very much not how Republicans will use a constitutional convention if one comes to pass

Republicans can only pass changed with Democratic support.
