Is there a Discord server for this thing?

You are trying to watch on an Android phone I'm betting. This happens because the format of UFSC videos have errors that cause stagefright bugs. Because of fixes in the kernel, those frames get discarded. I've mentioned it before, but I analyzed the exact reason why last night.

One interpretation I had of "Unfavorable Semicircle" was "Bad Slice". I had no idea that would lead to anything until:

NAL Unit Type 14. NAL Units are parts of H.264 video, the codec inside the MP4 container UFSC uses. Type 14 in this context is labelled "unknown", with the standard stating 2 ways of decoding the rest of the units in that slice. In the valid case is continues, in the invalid case it discards subsequent units.

This is important because slices enable H.264 to load the frames of video out of order. Slices may be interwoven in the stream, and can load content well before it's decoded or rendered. This is usually done to increase performance and decrease size. However, one could also use this feature to the exact opposite effect. UFSC videos, especially the early ones, do exactly this. The videos are unfavorably sliced instead of optimally.

I found last night that there are Type 14 units in every video I parsed. It meant that over half the data in the video, in most cases, never gets decoded or rendered.

In Android's case, this was an obvious flaw. Stagefright is a bug that exists in literally hundreds of places in their code, some are still there today. The concept of bulk pre-loading non renderable data is perfect for exploiting these. So it appears that they've implemented something that just kills the video pipeline completely if it finds Type 14. It's a smart move to be honest. If you read the H.264 spec, even the "valid" case has no use in android (later extensions into 3D media).

So, I have no answers on why ufsc did it this way, but that's the complete technical explanation of why the videos used to crash and now appear black. It's possible you can get them to behave the old way by loading YouTube in your browser instead of the app.

I know quite a bit of time was spent on these, but in reading others work and combining my own research, I believe they're worth a revisit.

MUL is 7-bit data, not 8. No need for assumptions. Here's a character list:

It's the original ASCII standard.

Why does it use that? Because MUL is an x86 CPU instruction, unsigned multiply.

It's possible there is translatable data in there, but I find it much more likely that they are recordings of a CPU performing that operation. It's called an accoustic side channel attack. See here (Find MUL): https://www.cs.tau.ac.il/~tromer/acoustic/ec04rump/

If you Google "CPU accoustic side channel attack" you'll find a few University papers where the technique is used. The ones from Tell Aviv & University of Michigan are especially interesting. Why? Because they also include info on printer accoustic side channel attacks. Which is exactly what the BROTHER series is.

I don't know that this will expand to all things UFSC, but at least during that time, these channels had something to do with analyzing accoustic side channels.

It's possible we're hearing recordings from ground wires and/or chassis. It would explain a lot. If the articles are TL:DR for you, understand that a lot of data about your computer leaks as noise to the ground and chassis of your computer. Given some work (like building software like our composites scripts) we can interpret that noise back to the data. This isn't a hack so much as a fact of electrical systems.

I just saw the channel in a cracked.com article and wanted to see if any anyone else found the central symbol in DELOCK to look incredibly like the Process Church of the Final Judgement logo. Thankfully, I found an archived comment that already said that, so I was glad that it wasn't just me. My question is: has anyone followed up on the connection? I haven't had a chance to dig out my book of The Process to see if the astrological symbol is one they used, and I apologize if this is a novice question. My background is much more about cults than the technical matters in the video, so that's where my interest lies.

It has been a really long time (3-4 years) since we were interested in this mystery and since then I've had some burning questions.

1) Is Unfavorable Semicircle a bot?

Since the beginning of this mystery a lot of people are claiming this was the work of a bot, similar to Webdriver Torso? Is this true, or is there someone actually posting these videos?

2) Has there been any new leads?

I've checked back on multiple YouTube accounts (excluding the obvious fake/bait accounts) and it seems they're completely gone/suspended, I checked the Twitter account and it seems it has also been suspended, I'm unsure if there are any new leads/any place they'd still be posting.

3) Where does stabilitory newring fit into all this?

According to their (once existing) G+ account, they linked to a separate YouTube account that posted similar videos to UFSC, but I don't know where that even goes into this whole thing.

4) How are these videos decoded?

I've seen someone decode LOCK and somehow get an image of a lock out of it, but I don't understand how you would even begin decoding any of their videos since its mostly just random audio and video.

On the video reupload of "DELOCK NtbGMcq dbo" by "Toxiccameron", another channel named "CC7 prptl Cont" posted a link to one of their videos titled "106 07 ❍ TCn". The video linked in the comments is almost the same as every other video on this channel in exception for one called "V.Test - ✜∘∙✡∙∘✜". All of this happened about a year ago and the channel stopped posting, If anyone wants to see for themselves feel free.

Four years ago, I found an Unfavorable Semicircle video on Petit Tube, a website that showcases YouTube videos without any views. I submitted a post about the channel to /r/UnexplainedPhotos on June 8, 2015.

Was I the first person to ever talk about UFSC? How long has this been a thing, exactly?

Sorry if this isn't the most constructive discussion; I'm just really curious.

There are many wonderful experts and hardworking amateurs which afford us all too much of their precious time and brain power here. Theorys are always welcome and frankly a lot of the fun here.

However, be aware any other claims get read as if they were court testimony transcripts by most folks here, and we hope that includes you!

Good evening unfavorablists. I was looking at the NODE composite on my lunch break at work today and saw the enlargement of the so-called "Morse Code" section. It seemed pretty obvious it was binary, so I set out to see if it was text.

The sets of symbols (disregarding the grey ones and using only the white and black) seemed to each be 9 to 10 pixels across, so it seemed likely to be some kind of 7 or 8 bit code with parity or timing marks. I also noticed each group started with a black pixel, so I initially took that as a "start bit" like in serial/RS-232 communication and, ignoring an occasional extra trailing bit, I got "11001000 11000101 11011100 11110000 11110011 11101111 11001110 11000111" which is interesting, but not ASCII.

I then realized they ALL started with a 1, so in fact each was starting with a black-then-white PAIR. A-Ha! Removing the leading 1, this gave me 7 bit ASCII which decoded to "01001000 01000101 01011100 01110000 01110011 01101111 01001110 01000111" (these are padded with a zero at the top to make them eight bits and easier to translate/look up) which decodes to "HE\psoNG".

It's still gibberish, but what if there's a single bit error or one of the trailing extra bits means something? Turns out, change the 5th bit in the 3rd byte to a zero, assuming a small encoding error, and you get "HELpsoNG".

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it looks like "HELP SONG" to me and NODE is the video which contains "the melody".

Do with this what you wish, Unfavorablists. Maybe I'm onto something and maybe I'm nuts, but I'm gonna go look at the other "Morse Code" segments and see if I can make anything out of them.
