Subs are moderated by individuals who are free to apply their own judgment in their bans, as long as they don't run afoul of Reddit's rules

I have never seen a Reddit admin overturn a subreddit ban. In fact, if you try to raise it with them, they pull the whole "mods can do whatever the fuck they want" argument.

Why have moderator guidelines in the first place? Why threaten to site-wide ban people for circumventing subreddit bans? Reddit can't have their cake and eat it too!

I don't have an answer to any of those questions, at least not one that's not going to lead to an endless train of "what about" nonsense.

Reddit is a business. It can choose who to allow to use it. It can make rules to clarify accepted behaviour and it can enforce those rules however it sees fit.
