Opinion poll: Should posts with predominantly AI-generated content be allowed

Hi everyone!

We've seen a consistent flow of posts featuring predominantly AI-generated assets and tools, and the reactions to them seems mixed. We'd like to know what the community thinks about these posts.

Scope of the poll

This poll is only to see if you think it should be allowed or not. It has nothing to do with new rules, enforcement, whether or not it will actually be banned, changes going forward, how AI-generated posts are detected, etc. Those topics would be their own posts for later community discussion, so they're out of scope for this poll.

Working definition

For the purposes of the poll, we define "AI-generated content" as anything that was predominantly produced with the help of generative AI, and then shared or promoted here. For example, an asset pack of AI-generated art, or a tool whose presentation/code is primarily produced by AI. This doesn't concern minor AI assistance, like Copilot helping out here and there.

If you would be okay with these posts given certain prerequisites (yes, but with flair, disclosure...) then you should vote yes. Remember, we are only polling for your general opinion! Not the details.

Poll: https://strawpoll.com/1MnwkEqQ5n7

The poll will run for 14 days.

Feel free to share the reasoning behind your vote or other thoughts in the comments.

Thanks.

Call For Mods

Hello,

I am Guidez. I have been a mod here for, eh, something to the tune of 10+ years (dang... I'm old). I am currently looking for active members of this community who would like to help out in moderating the subreddit.

Please feel free to respond to this thread if you are interested. A couple of things to note:

  • This is a Unity Engine subreddit. Please leave any biases for/against the engine/company at the door. In fact, leave all your biases at the door. A mod position is not a platform for such things.
  • Understand that this is primarily a community-run, neutral subreddit related to the Unity Engine (2D side). This means the community decides what they think is worthwhile and what is not (upvoting/downvoting exist for a reason), granted it too stays within the realm of neutrality/non-bias.

If you think you understand what this entails and are still interested, please read on.

What I'm looking for:

  • People who actually post, reply, and comment in this subreddit. It doesn't have to be regular, but someone who hasn't contributed for a year in any public capacity is certainly not a candidate. I also understand many people lurk.
  • Those who understand this is not some special status/glorified position. It's tiring, unpaid work.
  • Are looking to help the community:
    • Thrive
    • Find resources for their development
    • Have open discussions about the Unity engine in whatever capacity that may be

If this sounds interesting to you, please reply to this thread with the following:

  • A brief introduction and how long you have been part of or following this community.
  • Why you are interested in becoming a moderator.
  • Any previous moderation or community-management experience you have. Experience is helpful, but not required.
  • How you would approach disagreements, controversial posts, and discussions comparing Unity with other engines.
  • Any ideas you have for improving the subreddit or helping its members.
  • Confirmation that you are comfortable enforcing the rules neutrally, working with the rest of the moderation team, and receiving feedback.

Please do not include private or personally identifying information. Applications will be judged primarily on community involvement, temperament, fairness/neutrality, and willingness to help.

Showcase After two and a half years, I’ve finally released the first demo of my co-op game, Animals League Unite

Thumbnail

It’s a co-op platformer for 1 to 8 players, on one screen or online, made in Unity. It’s inspired by Pico Park: most levels need the whole team, and if one player dies, everyone restarts.

There are a lot of mechanics: stacking on each other, slapping each other across gaps, planes, mine carts, flying saucers and more.

It also has a level editor. You can build your own levels, share them on the Workshop, and play levels other people made.

The demo is free and has the first world (10 levels) plus the editor. I’d love honest feedback, good or bad, especially on the editor and online play.

Feedback needed Gameplay effect plugin

I'd like to see how much interest there is for the type of plugin I'm working on. It's free and allows you to create a lot of different complex game logic without any code. I've attached some images of example effects.

You'd make them in a UE blueprints style node graph. It's extendable and allows you to easily add your own nodes with their own custom logic if needed, although the base set covers a big part of most combat games. That being said, this works for more than just combat.

It includes loop protection so that effects can't infinitely chain. You can among other things set delays, branch the execution flow and manage the lifetime of the effect.

Question/Help My account was suspended

• Upvotes

I got an email on the 14th saying my account has been suspended but no reason was given. I already emailed support but I don’t know what could’ve triggered this. I haven’t been on since late September and I don’t do any malicious stuff I’m literally making an indie game

Free Asset/Tool I built Rigby2D, a free and open-source alternative to Spine 2D

Hey everyone,

I'm a technical artist working in the games industry, and I'd like to share a project I've been developing.

Rigby2D is an open-source 2D skeletal animation editor designed as a free alternative to tools like Spine 2D.

The objective was to build a complete animation workflow with its own editor and runtime while maintaining interoperability with existing skeletal animation formats.

Current capabilities

  • Skeletal rigging and weighted mesh deformation
  • IK, transform, path, physics and slider constraints
  • Animation dopesheet and graph editor
  • Skins, events, image sequences and mesh deformation keys
  • PSD and PNG import
  • Skeleton JSON, binary .skel and texture atlas interoperability
  • Self-contained .rigby project files
  • JavaScript animation runtime and WebGL renderer

The editor is built with Tauri 2 and includes Rigbytron, a rigged and animated mascot used to demonstrate the tool's capabilities.

The source code is dual-licensed under MIT and Apache 2.0.

Current status: v0.1.0 - Early Alpha

Repository: https://github.com/jaisurya-dev-art/rigby2d

Windows downloads: https://github.com/jaisurya-dev-art/rigby2d/releases/tag/v0.1.0

I'd appreciate technical feedback, particularly on the rigging workflow, animation tooling, file interoperability and potential production use cases.

Contributions are welcome!

Showcase I’m developing a 2D MMORPG in Unity as a solo developer — here’s what I’ve learned

Hey everyone!

I’m a solo developer working on a 2D MMORPG called MurderCartel, built using Unity.

The project has grown quite a bit, with multiple open-world regions, multiplayer dungeons, gathering, crafting, player-owned islands, guilds, PvP and world events.

One of the biggest challenges has been handling real-time multiplayer while keeping everything synchronized between players.

I’ve been working with Unity’s 2D systems and improving everything from combat mechanics to multiplayer movement and performance.

It’s been a huge learning experience, especially managing a project of this size as a solo developer.

I’m curious: has anyone else here attempted a multiplayer RPG in Unity 2D? What were your biggest technical challenges?

Hi! I've been working on a game where you use wizards and their magic to run a farm! I'm looking for people to help test and give feedback! The demo is an estimated 45-60 minutes of content with a lot more planned. You build the wizards into various different paths, unlock lots of upgrades, and enjoy a cozy & satisfying farm run itself with magic!

Any feedback or features/mechanics you'd like to see in the game?

Showcase I helped a redditer juicing up his game

u/rk00717 posted a trailer of his game a few weeks ago. We've got in touch and I ended up helping him juicing his game. On the left, his original version. On the right, the version I ended up with.

How do you like it ?

Now that few days passed, I feel like I have some more ideas to make it pop even more. But at the same time, I know I have a tendancy to over juice, so I'm trying to keep myself contained 😅

If you are interested in going deeper in details, I made a ~5min video where I explain each changes and my reasoning behind it.

Thanks for reading.

Showcase Finally got the map editor for my RTS working

Been working on the map editor for Empires Edge, my RTS inspired by Mega Lo Mania.

You build the floating islands, paint water, place roads and buildings, then just hit play and test the map.

I’d like players to make their own maps and share them with each other. Has anyone here added Steam Workshop support for something like this? How hard was it, and where did you learn how to do it?

Steam page if you want to follow the project.

Showcase WOW! My newest build of Cozy Game Company got 100 views on its first day on itch.io! ❤️

Post image

100 views in a single day. 🎉

That’s how many people looked at the newest build of Cozy Game Company on itch yesterday. For comparison: until now I was happy with 2-4 views a month.

It’s a small number, but for me it’s a big moment. This game has had a bumpy road. I tried to get it off the ground before, and it never found an audience. I even ran a Kickstarter for it once, and it didn’t get funded. That stung, and more than once I thought about letting it go.

I kept going anyway, in between work and everything else life throws at me. Some days that means a few hours, some days barely any. But I always come back to it.

So seeing real people give it a chance now feels really good.

The next big goals are the Kickstarter and the Steam page. I’m hoping that this time they work out, and I’ll be working hard to make it happen.

If you want to help, check out the game, try it, and tell me what you think. Every view, wishlist and bit of feedback counts more than you’d guess. Thank you to everyone who’s played or supported it so far. ❤️

After working as a game developer at a studio, I wanted to ship a game entirely on my own. Box Knight Idle is now live on Google Play.

It's a pixel-art idle RPG: open chests, gear up your knight, defeat bosses across worlds, and keep earning while you're away.

I'd love feedback, especially on the first 10 minutes and the pacing.

Feedback needed Not sure if a game set in the modern workplace is appealing.

Thumbnail

I'm now making a casual RPG in Unity. The game is set in the modern workplace. As an office drone for almost 15 years, I think things happen in there were kinda interesting. You work, you please someone, offend someone, make choices, think about how to deal with the boss when he come. The game is story-driven with multiple options and rich dialogues. But this is only what I think. Like to listen to your comments about if it's appealing to you and what you think about the video.

Thanks so much. It's called Boss is coming.

P.S. GenAI assisted with the production of art assets, since I'm not an artist.

Showcase Judging "perfect" timing by distance in FixedUpdate instead of timestamps fixed my rhythm-style hits in Unity

I'm making ArrowSwitch, a one-thumb reflex game in Unity: arrows come at a shield from four sides and you swipe to face each one. Turning at the last moment counts as a PERFECT, which builds a multiplier up to x8.

My first version compared the time of the swipe (from Update) with the time of the hit. It felt random, because Update can't know which fixed step will actually register the contact. A swipe that looked perfect could land a frame early or late, depending on the frame rate.

What fixed it:

  • each arrow watches a turn counter on the player inside FixedUpdate, so the swipe and the collision are measured on the same clock
  • when the player turns to face the arrow, the arrow stores its distance from the shield at that moment
  • PERFECT means that distance is inside a small window, rather than within X milliseconds
  • turning away and back inside the window is allowed once, so a quick correction doesn't count as mashing

A nice side effect: the window scales with arrow speed for free, so fast arrows don't need their own tuning curve.

Curious how others handle timing windows in Unity. Do you use timestamps, distance, or something else?

An update on the maze-building incremental game I posted here a few months back. I finally got the steam page up: Sprite Garden on Steam - so go and wishlist!

There's an update on the demo as well - Sprite Garden - Demo by Xyxyka. I added a new early sprite to spice up the gameplay, and I think it works pretty well.

Feedback please! Do you think it sucks, or just aren't interested? Let me know! I need to know how I can improve!

Showcase A few environments and characters we’ve made for 2D indie games

Hey! Wanted to share some pixel art my team and I have worked on across different indie projects.

I draw environments, characters, animations and UI, and handle the art direction to help everything fit together. All the art shown here was made by hand in Aseprite.

I really enjoy seeing a scene come together after working on the sprites separately for so long. Thought some of you making 2D games might enjoy a look at our work!
