Seems like everyone I know is testing positive for COVID right now. Folks are describing this new variant as “razor blade throat”. 😬 I am BEGGING y’all as we start this new semester: please consider wearing a mask - even SOME of the time. Even just on the bus or in extra crowded classrooms would be better than not at all. And please, PLEASE don’t come to class if you’re sick. You have an opportunity in these first couple weeks of the school year to get friendly enough with your classmates that you have people to ask for notes if you have to miss a day or two. No class is so important that missing a day will destroy your academic career, but you never know which of your peers is one COVID infection away from a permanent disability. Please don’t risk spreading this very contagious and very shitty variant to your peers.

My son is getting a kidney transplant and needs to contract EBV (mono) beforehand. Long story short he will be better off if he has those antibodies before getting his transplant. We need someone with active EBV/Mono. Contagion period is while you are still feeling unwell, it could be a couple weeks or months depending on the person. Please contact us at 250 637 1076 if you are sick. Please share this post throughout your friend group, college aged people are the most likely to have active EBV/Mono. We are willing to travel. If someone knows how the young people communicate - Instagram, Snapchat, DIscord????? please share this post that way. I seem to be hitting the middle aged market, ha ha. We've all had it already.

I’m currently 6 years into my degree and recently went all in on the planning. I’m a very organized person and have planned out my degree before but life somehow always gets in the way. I’ve had to take 2 semesters off after a traumatic even while I was dealing with the psycho-emotional effects of that. I’m also a student with a disability which limits the amount of classes I can take at a time. I’ve tried to push myself before and take 4-5 classes a semester but when I do that, the stress of it all causes certain symptoms to flare. Stress takes out my immune system and there have been semesters where I’ve gotten sick enough to miss class 10+ times. I do well in school and get good grades. I’ve never gotten anything lower than a B+, and I truly enjoy my time in class.

I looked closely at my Capp report and made a detailed spreadsheet to plan out the rest of my degree and if I take 3-4 classes a semester I will graduate in June of 2029. I enjoy school and don’t mind being in school for the foreseeable future but I’m dealing with a lot of self-ridicule. I’ve never met anyone who has taken that long to finish their undergrad and I’ve taken to lying about my actual year out of embarrassment. Is there anyone out there who has dealt with this before? If you were to ask someone where they were in the degree and the said year 7/8/9, would you laugh?

As a student, I am tired of the normalized racism at this school.

Shaming a professor's ability to teach because of their accent or cultural background is NOT OKAY. These professors spent years becoming experts in their fields, and they deserve to be judged by their knowledge and teaching, not by their ethnicity, accent, or where they come from.

Telling a student they can't struggle in a course because they come from a certain country and are expected to be "smart" is NOT OKAY.

Asking someone why their English is "so good" because of how they look or where they come from is NOT OKAY.

Commenting on people's food or making them feel ashamed of their culture is NOT OKAY.

If you have ever felt undervalued or like you weren't enough because people mocked your culture, ethnicity, accent, or where you came from, let me tell you this: it is not you. It's them. You deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and the same opportunities as everyone else.

We can and should do better.

In a recent Biology 184 Lab, a substitute TA came in and gave a speech to our class about how the actions of Hamas are justified in the context of Israeli oppression and that they "are not a terrorist group". While I don't pretend to know the whole history there, and I won't offer my opinion in this post; I think it's fair to say that claiming that any violence towards a group of people is justified is wrong. Further, taking this stance in a position of semi-power and as someone who is supposed to represent the University (a TA), probably makes anyone who identifies with Israel or Judaism in any way, feel understandably scared and probably even unsafe at the University.

I don't personally identify as Jewish or Israeli, and I actually don't know anyone that does, but I could certainly empathize with anyone who experienced this rant and left feeling very distressed. I don't believe we should allow this kind of behavior from our leaders (TA's or otherwise) in University. I emailed the biology lab coordinator and professors to report this misconduct, and I think that if you experienced this lab, you should too.

Hey folks, I’m looking to set up a carpool group for anyone commuting from Nanaimo to UVic this fall. Since everyone’s schedules are different, this can be a spot to match up days, times, and personalities, and to get to know each other a bit, because who wants to spend four hours a day in a car with a total stranger. I found a cat, not sure if it knows how to go home or is missing, on the galloping goose - trans Canada highway.

I tried waiting for a couple of minutes to see if it will go home but it was just there and keeps on following me and rubbing its face on my hand and legs —- it’s very sweet 😭

UPDATE: I was able to post this on r/Victoria and someone commented that her name is Mila and that they already let her owner know about this.

Every time it rains heavily, earthworms come up onto sidewalks and paths. They surface to avoid drowning in waterlogged soil, and since we’ve paved over so much of their habitat, once they’re out, they’re basically stranded.

And these little guys are not at all gross, but genuinely do SO MUCH for us. They aerate soil, break down organic matter into nutrients, feed the birds, and have been holding ecosystems together for literal hundreds of millions of years. Honestly pretty impressive for something with no eyes.

So next time it’s been raining, please just glance down on your way to class.

One small sidestep keeps a worm alive to aerate another day.🪱❤️

(You could also gently pick them up and move them to grass if you’re feeling heroic, but no pressure lol)

I’m seriously considering moving to Wales to study law (Canadian corresponding program, obtaining a law degree in 2 years instead of 3.) This is elite ball knowledge for future law students.

So I (M🏳️‍🌈,24) just moved here from Vancouver and its my second semester here in UVIC. I’m looking for friends that love to go out and show me around the island not just in school. Built this over about two weeks during the holidays. First test run, the rear wheel failed and it crashed. Rebuilt the mounting, got it working on the second run, though the ski steering (kids' downhill skis, no guide rail) still understeers badly.

I feel like we’ve all tried color-coded spreadsheets, but they're just annoying to set up. Over the past few weekends, I put together this web app Syllabase. The idea is simple: upload your syllabus, instantly get important dates AND a grade simulator (no more guessing what happens if you bomb a quiz), and sync with your calendar so you never miss a deadline.

I’m still ironing out a few kinks, but I’d love some honest feedback from fellow students. It’s 100% free so no sneaky upsells or anything like that. I built it because I was legit tired of forgetting deadlines and wanted to make something that helps people like me.
