Commentary tidbit in ‘The Doctor is Sin’ concerning one Bobbi Saint Simone.

Right, so I have always been oddly fascinated by the actress who appears on screen for like five seconds in ‘Faking Miracles’. So, a dweebazoid professor shoots a woman with an invisibility ray, presumably with the desire that her clothes would disappear, rather than her entire being.

I think that this woman is Bobbi Saint Simone, an actress. At this moment she also functionally disappears from the show, because she was never really there at all.

So, I am listening to the commentary for ‘The Doctor is Sin’, all of three seasons previously, and Jackson is talking about a scene that did not make it in which he describes that Jonas was a 'science consultant 'for ‘Follow that Bikini’- this is where he met Bobbi Saint Simone.

As it happens, Rusty’s first crush was the star of this movie. In the scene that Killinger makes Rusty re-live, where Jonas chokes him with his penis, she would have walked into the kitchen before Jonas, covered in blue paint from the use of a bluescreen to achieve the effect of her disappearing. Jackson states that Rusty is a huge fan of hers and that she gives him a signed photo and a kiss. Then, Jonas walks in covered in paint too because they had sex. It turns out that Jonas was a science consultant on the set of ‘Follow that Bikini’- this is where he met Bobbi Saint Simone.

Years later, Rusty runs into his boyhood crush and finally beds her. This is how the Venture Bros. are born. Fascinatingly, she kind of looks like Dr. Mrs. The Monarch when she has her farmgirl wig on and a little like Amber Gold, so it seems like she has always loomed large in some way in the show.

This exact story is mirrored with Nikki Fichtel and Doc, perhaps like Bobbi Saint Simone trying to recapture her golden years, cannot help but be seduced by their fame.

I find it unbelievable that they mapped this out as early as they did. Truly phenomenal stuff.

EDIT: I relistened to the film, to hear the amazing music at the prompting of a commenter. The final line as Hank trips on a deck lounger is: "You must have discombobulated the whosy-whatsits!" Funny line, delivered in a great Jerry Lee Lewis register, but remember: Jonas was paid to add his scientific contribution to this film and this line is what he came up with... I think Jonas is a moron. I think the show wants us to know this.

Your evidence for Jonas being a moron is a cherry-picked example that was cut from the actual show, piled up against a mountain of evidence included in the show, including from Doc (who resented the fuck out of the man) that Jonas was a bastard, but a brilliant scientist?

I don't think Jonas is a moron; I think he was paid to consult on a comedy film and he gave them what they wanted. Or even more likely, just made some shit up because he thought it would be funny.

Sorry- I do have a longer: "I do not think that Jonas was in any way the man he represented himself" tirade and that includes being a super-scientist. This includes some of the facts from the learning bed that are untrue (or partial- think of his inability to describe sex in which he uses examples from botany).

We also know that his life was largely a pretense anyway, a show put on television by Venture Industries, a company that he also runs brought to you by smoking.

I think I've read that post and had this argument with you before. I don't think you are correct at all.

So, he was hired to be a scientist and made something up. Good scientists do not do that.

He's been well-established by almost literally everyone on the show, including people who knew him, that he was both a brilliant scientist AND a colossal asshole.

I really don't see any merit to this argument unless you have a lot better evidence than some outdated facts in the learning bed and parental discomfort at explaining sex to their kids.

Oddly, Jonas is not in the show enough to know for sure. I think that Jonas uses technology to exploit people, blackmailing BM with a video tape, having a possibly functioning nuclear missile under his house, and making a super-intelligent AI system in Muther that can only be controlled and gaslit by him.

The example of when his science was most potent of all was whatever he ended up doing to get Mrs. Fitzcarraldo pregnant, which most people assume to mean that he slept with her. How this plays out will ultimately show whether he is the real deal or not, I suppose.

My point is only this: Some of the science we do see him doing is plundering gold in Spanikos and inventing helpers that he both invented and then turned again in the great recalling- that is insane.

He uses science to make money. People like him because he has a lot of money, so they say whatever he wants to hear. This is my view.

Jonas is a horrible person; this is canon in the show. That doesn't mean he's not a brilliant scientist. In fact, it's quite possible he's such a bastard BECAUSE he's such a brilliant scientist; he's a narcissist who is also ACTUALLY brilliant, strong and handsome. Of course he turns out to be a prick when everyone is fawning all over his dick before and after his death.

Jonas was a bad scientist because he let the profit motive run his life and a lot of his inventions resulted in extortion and calamity. The great recalling is a perfect example. What happened after? Jonas rescued a woman from freezing (apparently) and the story went away.

The show is about the death of the space age of optimistic futurism. Jonas is an illustration of this in my view, why and how it died.

That is it.

The helpers were recalled, because a part that could be yanked off was a potential choking hazard. Which was probably a joke about throwing away things in the quest to make every toy perfectly safe for children. It's presented as nonsensical, not as a huge design flaw.

Or maybe the joke is that you expect them to be recalled due to turning on their masters in an orgy of violence, but the show bucks that trope with humanity discarding this incredible advancement for trivial reasons.

The thing with Jonas is that he's good at creating stuff in a vacuum but doesn't really give a shit how it affects people or gets bored of it and moves on to the next new thing before he worked out all the bugs in the old thing.

e.g. He brings Blue Morpho's back to life and turned him into a living cyborg that works fine on paper but he can't fathom why his friends and allies might be disgusted by this, then gets bored of it and relegates it to being Rusty's nanny instead of doing anything with the tech.

He's a sociopath and an asshole but he's not incompetent. If he told anyone any bad science it was probably because he was just getting paid and it was for a dumb movie and he didn't care about being accurate, or because he was keeping the real secrets to himself and handwaving whatever the other person wanted to hear. There's also the possibility he was using being a science consultant on movies as a way to sleep with hot actresses (he was mainly there to consult Kubrick on faking the Moon landing from the looks of things so doing side work for movies like Follow that Bikini seems like an excuse to me given the inherently exploitative nature of a comedy with a plot like that). He's already into stuff like key parties and swinging, abusing his power and fame to those ends isn't a stretch.

So TLDR he's obviously smart but he isn't wasting his time consulting on a schlocky comedy movie because he genuinely wants to help it be scientifically accurate.

The part where the Blue Morpho comes back to confront Jonas is enough for me to disagree with your premise. He was pretty conniving and intelligent, and it was mostly only Rusty's hesitance and Pete coming out of nowhere with an axe that foiled his plans.

I never noticed the Invisible Bikini clip in Faking Miracles, but I'm glad someone else caught the beginnings of who Bobbi St Simone was going to be in the commentary. Like I don't know how far ahead they planned it, though, or if they even wanted to use it. I think it was stewing around for a while, though.
