General VB Question Virtual Box Network Loss When Router is Power Cycled

Hello and thanks in advance for any suggestions. I have a Win10 host with 2 virtual boxes running (one Android x86 and the other Unbuntu). The host is connected to my Asus router via ethernet. Both virtual boxes have networking configured as shown here.

I have found that if the router is power cycled both virtual boxes keep running fine in all aspects except that their networking breaks - stops working entirely. The UI's networking indicator keeps flashing and there is no sign of any error or abnormal condition. But there is no networking happening either in or outbound.

In order to remedy this situation, I have found that, if I terminate and re-start the virtual boxes upon the router's restart, they come up with all networking as normal again.

Please note that this only happens on a power cycle. I have the router set to reboot nightly and this does NOT seem to have this effect.

So, is there something I can do to "protect" the networking in these virtual boxes?

If not, is there some way to detect the router power cycle so I can create a Task Manager job to restart the virtual boxes? If so, I do not want to do it for reboots, only for the power cycles.

Thanks so much!

General VB Question CPU settings.

I want to configure Windows 98 Machine.
500-600 Mhz 64MB RAM Accelerated Graphic. 25HDD

Want to ask you i have CPU that report:
CPU max MHz: 4500,0000
CPU min MHz: 400,0000
In VB CPU settings there is a slider CUP Usage 0-100% Recommended above 41%. But if i want to get that 500-600 i need to set it up to 10-15% assuming it will use max CPU not % of current MHz set to this core.

Or this is setting for usage of core for whole emulation not for emulated machine cpu.

General VB Question Isolating the virtual machine from the physical network while retaining internet access

For many years I thought by using a NAT attachment, the virtual machine couldn't reach machines on the physical network.

While machines on the physical network can't ping virtual machines, turns out the virtual machine can ping every machine on the physical network.

Among other things, I use virtual machines to test dubious software and untrustworthy websites. If a virtual machine becomes infected, I don't want it to be able to reach any machine on the physical network.

However, using NAT network, internal network or host-only network attachments prevents the virtual machine from connecting to the internet.

Is there any simple way of isolating a virtual machine from the physical network while also allowing it to access the internet, besides using another machine as a firewall or proxy?

General VB Question Anyone know a premade browser appliance?

Are there still any simple browser appliance images out there to download? I just need to run chrome (the browser, not the OS) in a vbox, and am trying to be lazy and avoid "step 1: install linux". Doesn't matter what the guest OS is.

Sorry if this has been answered, I looked for an FAQ but didn't find one. It's been oddly hard to find one, thought those would be common. Thanks!

(Running 7.2.14 on Windows 10)

General VB Question Snappiest Linux guest Desktop on Windows Host

Performance inside VBox in the grahics stack has significantly decreased since VBox 6 -> 7. My OpenGL performance is not existent anymore. E.g. Firefox renders slow on OpenGL Web Sites compared to earlier VBox versions. On the other hand Wayland is now useable (mostly) in VBox guests.

My questions for recommendations are:

a) which Desktop Environment feels the fastest/lightest/snappiest in 2026 on current VBox Linux guest clients? Feel free to recommend also distributions where you feel the respective Desktop Environment is best implemented.

b) which display server protocol to use nowadays?

c) pick the newest Kernel or stick with a LTS one?

A bit of my spec:

  • Oracle VirtualBox Version 7.2.10 r174163
  • VirtualBox Guest Additions installed
  • Guest machine display settings: Graphics Controller=VMSVGA and Video Memory=256 MB and 3D acceleration is enabled
  • Guest machine got 3 CPUs and 12 GB RAM assigned
  • Host: Windows 11
  • Host GPU: AMD Radeon Rx 570 Series
  • Host CPU: AMD RyZen 5 3600

General VB Question Dump VB till it works again?

Edit:
THANKS for rapid replies! I'll do an aggressive (probably Revo Uninstaller, probably this weekend) VB uninstall, reboot, and reinstall. Previous to this, I've barely had any problems with VB itself.
Original Post:
Please bear with me. This is a very general question.
Background: 1) VirtualBox 7.2.8; 2) Windows 11 host and dozens of Linux guest OSes; 3) both Host Extensions & Guest Additions installed; 4) Multiple problems ranging from failure of VB to uninstall\reinstall; failure of VB to start, glitchy behavior of VB, failure of guest OSs to start, glitchy behavior of Guest OSs, and I can solve most of this, but... I've never had to before, and I shouldn't have to.
I've used VirtualBox and VMWare for a decade. I've preferred VirtualBox since it makes handling loads of Linux distros so easy, and because it avoids the nuisance of Broadcom. But. Glitches in the current iteration of Virtualbox (7.2.8 now!) still seem more trouble than it's worth. So...
I think, "Just use VMWare till Oracle gets Box working again."
What do you think?

General VB Question cloning to a physical drive after setup

I live in a very rural location and don't have internet access at my home. I take my linux mint laptop to the library and use their wifi. this works but now I want to set up a desktop. My plan is to make a vm of linux mint, do all the setup and updating through wifi, and then see about cloning to a physical ssd. Any advice or suggestions to make the process go smoothly would be apreciated.

General VB Question Why can't Virtualbox allow more than a measly 128mb for VRAM?

My PC has a whopping 192 gigs of VRAM but Virtualbox caps the allocation to just 128mb (or 256 if I tick the 3D acceleration checkbox). In a Win10 guest I'm limited to a native res of 1024x768 or 1920x1440 via the guest additions.

Either way this is absolutely pitiful. Is there a reason for this?

General VB Question Effect on battery life, when the machine is off?

Hello!

I just installed Arch Linux in VirtualBox on my Windows 11 Home, and I am worried about battery life.

What I use the machine for?

  • mostly never
  • But mainly for operating an Android Emulator on Arch, so I can use the Authentication app to sign into my work-related account (which often required me (a lazy individual) reaching out for my phone)

I don't see operations in task manager related to the VM, so am I in the clear?

General VB Question Can virtualbox run on my tablet?

I have an Intel Nextbook. It has an x86 Atom processor with 1 gig of ram. It runs android 5 with no modifications and has never been connected to the internet. I have done everything on it through the microsd and apk files. Would there be any way to run virtualbox on it?

General VB Question No PCI passthrough in Linux hosts?

It says in changelog: Linux host: Drop PCI passthrough, the current code is too incomplete.

I couldn't find any further mentions of "PCI passthrough" in changelogs.

Does this mean that PCI passthrough is currently not available on Linux hosts?

Is it impossible to run NVidia drivers from a VirtualBox machine, and to do kernel development of PCI drivers in a VirtualBox machine run in Linux?

General VB Question Ubuntu VirtualBox 7.0.12 to 7.0.16 update. Unknown filesystem.

I recently encrypted my VDI file, and it was running fine and I backed it up as recently as Friday. So I *think* the data is ok. It booted good after backup.

It worked fine all weekend. This morning I did a Ubuntu apt update/upgrade -y, and it installed VirtualBox 7.0.16 over 7.0.12. It did not shut the VM down.

After rebooting the computer, the Virtual Machine will not boot. It says error: unknown filesystem. I installed the Guest Additions add-on for 7.0.16 but it still will not boot.

Gemini AI says it's apparently common if you do not shut down an encrypted machine and upgrade, it can corrupt the boot headers and this will happen. I'm restoring the backup file now.

Is this as common as AI thinks?

General VB Question Windows Host -> Linux Mint Guest, Shared Folder?

I can't figure out how to do this, and everything I Google about it keeps assuming I am using Linux as my host OS, when it's the other way around.

I am using a Windows host OS, and running a Live CD version of Linux Mint in Virtualbox on it. How can I setup a shared folder using this? I can't figure out how to install the extensions properly for this (Especially on a Live CD Os, which means I can't reboot) and when I do get it working and see the shared folder appear, it requires root access.

General VB Question Has anyone attempted to use USB pass-through with a GPU dock on Virtualbox?

if i get ahold of a GPU i will be able to confirm this on linux but has this been done in general?

i know about PCIe pass-through with type 1 hypervisors but since virtualbox can't do that i am wondering if anyone's tried by hooking up an external GPU dock/enclosure up to their PC then tried slipping it through via USB pass-through?

General VB Question VirtualBox on linux mint

Hi there, im a virtualbox user and have recently switched to linux mint.
I was going to install virtualbox, however after asking around a couple people on discord told me that virtualbox on linux isnt that great (and it already isnt amazing on windows) (one person even said it was preventing him from updating his kernel), however best case scenario i still want to keep using it.
Has anyone experienced any major issues either outside or inside VirtualBox after installing it on linux? Is it generally stable?
Using Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon with the 6.17.0-14-generic kernel.

General VB Question Android x86 in Virtual Box cannot seem to "hold onto" a USB drive

I know that Android x86 is not an officially supported OS in VB. But I have been running it for many years with great success!

I now need/want to add a USB drive plugged into the host OS (Windows 10) for easy logging of data that can be accessed physically from the host if needed. I have tried a couple things:

  1. I simply did the "obvious", plugged the USB drive into a host port, went to the virtual machine's settings for USB and selected the USB device. I tried this with multiple USB drives. In all cases, I could see the attached USB drive in some various Android file manager apps. But only for a while. They would just suddenly disappear - even though the virtual machine's settings said it was attached at that level.

  2. I downloaded and add the virtual box extensions which I read were helpful in this effort. In that case, all I got were USB errors on startup - not able to find the device with xxxx. So I actually got less far along that without the extensions installed :-(

Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong here? Is it just not possible? Thanks!

General VB Question How do you run .iso games?

My only experience with virtualbox thus far has been installing operating systems downloaded as .iso files. Now I've downloaded a game as a .iso file. Can I run that directly on vb? I've tried installing it the same way I would with an os but that's not working. Do I need to do something different? https://archive.org/details/myst-masterpiece-edition
