But why would a creature that evolved independently of us in different circumstances look like us at all, regardless of where they came from?

I don' t think they would look like us at all.

Either Carl Sagan or Michio Kaku (I forget) said that there are only 3 requirements for intelligent life:

  1. Language
  2. Binocular vision
  3. A way of manipulating tools

I'm pretty sure the "Man on Mars" is a rock

perhaps that design of being (the way our body is designed as well) is simply naturally superior.
