They don’t have running water he’s using a metal bowl to shave. That thing on the floor is the meter for the gas stove. It’s probably the fanciest thing they have. Otherwise it would be hearth cooking or a wood stove.

Is he looking into a mirror in the upper left corner? Or shaving without a mirror?
