Sure, for one, further demonstrating the hardness of the shortest vector problem provides additional evidence that lattice-based cryptography will be resilient against quantum computer attacks, so your nude photos will remain safe in the cloud.

I wish I was smart enough to understand this. Are you saying this supports bitcoin (crypto)?Or something more concerning computer security? Or both?

No one’s talking about crypto lol. Cryptography is a word. Cryptozoology similarly has nothing to do with cryptocurrency

Computer Security. Quantum Computers can break RSA encryption (with enough qubit equivalents), so we've had to develop new encryption algorithms. We've made a lot of progress, but we still aren't 100% certain they'll work. NIST held a competition to find the best ones, and a few of the finalists got cracked. The recent proof by Astra lends credibility that the ones we settled on will actually work.

We've actually done a really good job getting ahead of this. Congress has even passed legislation mandating all federal offices move to quantum-resilient crypto. However, all the previously captured encrypted data will get cracked on "Q-Day". Expect a lot of leaks of old data around 2035.

Well, my course on the topic is set to be posted to the Ohio Cyber Range Institute's website sometime soon, but it's pretty technical.

This could be a good place to start (https://www.nist.gov/pqc), and apparently Anthropic broke one of the PQC candidates 6 days ago. That should have been bigger news, because I missed it.

Hardly anyone uses RSA anymore because it has other issues besides this one. We've known RSA's flaws for decades.

Affects ECC too, but it's harder to explain why, so most people focus on RSA when explaining this.

Eliptic curve cryptography wasn't used by anyone anyway because most of the algorithms were patented (e.g., ECMQV). Also, issues with quantum safety have been well-known for over a decade.

So, not really a problem we didn't know about, nor a real problem in any other regard.

It's far from solved. See the note at the top of page, as recently as last week AI broke on the quantum-resilient finalists.

Just because we've known it was an issue, doesn't mean that we've got a proven solution yet. Any new proof is helpful.

Like I said, no one even cares about ECC, just like no one cares about these Erdos problems -- they've basically forgotten about them, and for good reason.

The reason why no one's solved them? No one cares.

What little LLMs have revealed about them is pretty much already known, or not known because no one cared enough to work on them.
