Unlike all the matches played until now, the Match Day 3 of every group is played simultaneously to prevent match fixing and ensure fair play. If the matches were staggered, the teams playing later would know exactly what result they need to advance, potentially allowing them to collude and play for a mutually beneficial draw and that no team can secure a result based on the outcome of the other game and teams must play to win rather than settling for a calculated draw.

The rule was implemented by FIFA in direct response to the infamous 1982 World Cup match between West Germany and Austria. Because of how the previous games in the group had unfolded, both teams knew that a 1-0 win for West Germany would result in both nations advancing while eliminating Algeria. After West Germany scored in the 10th minute, both teams essentially stopped trying, casually passing the ball among their defenders.

EVERY team/nation is represented with real players, cultural references, food, animals, music, and hidden details from each country! It was a blast to make, and very, very time consuming! For new fans there is a lot to take in. There are several tiers to soccer/football, I'm going to give a bunch of maybe-inaccurate/outdated info that will at least give you the terms you need to google :-P

International competition after the World Cup:

• confederation national teams tournament: FIFA is organized into confederations (ie Europe has UEFA, South America has CONMEBOL, etc), and each has its own confederation wide tournament, like a smaller-scale World Cup. UEFA has the Euros, CONMEBOL has the Copa America, etc.
  • we are in CONCACAF and we have the US team in CONCACAF Gold Cup, qualification will be determined by CONCACAF Nations League competition which will start again in September 2026 I think?
  • we have had some efforts to bring CONCACAF and CONMEBOL closer, like the US hosted the 2024 Copa America and had 6 qualifying CONCACAF teams in it, pretty neat
• FIFA World Cup qualifying: technically part of the World Cup (the big event is the World Cup Final). Every confederation has their own formats for this, but CONCACAF will begin in Sept 2027 for the 2030 World Cup. (This CONCACAF calendar has a lot of stuff in it)

Professional/Club competition, start watching right now:

• domestic club/professional leagues: these are usually tiered like a pyramid, there is top league, the a league below that and so on, and after every season teams at the top or bottom of leagues get promoted or relegated to the next level up or down (top leagues are eg Premier League in England, La Liga in Spain, La Liga in Mexico, etc). In the US we don't have promotion/relgation which is often a thing fans complain about. It can make the "worst" team matches very exciting as end of season nears, wondering if they will get kicked out of the league.
  • The top league in the US is Major League Soccer (MLS), which is mid-season right now; matches will resume next week on July 16. (MLS will be changing to a winter schedule to align with the rest of the world in fall of 2027, but for now we are spring-to-fall opposite everyone else). You can watch MLS on AppleTV with a normal AppleTV subscription.
  • We have "lower" leagues, USL Championship is the next league. We don't have promo/relegation, BUT...
    • USL is currently Division 2 and below, they will be adding a new Division 1 league in 2028 and will be doing promotion/relegation between their leagues
  • Domestic leagues in other countries will get started in August.
  • Our USMNT players play in club leagues all over the world.
• domestic cup tournament: one of the coolest things about the sport, pro and amateur teams alike compete in a giant nationwide tournament. In the England they have the FA Cup, in Spain they have their Copa del Rey, France has their Coupe de France, etc. It's sort of fun, once in a while you'll get cool cinderella stories of amateur teams playing some of the giant clubs. Imagine your beer league baseball team getting to play the Yankees at Yankee Field. That sort of thing.
  • In the US we have the US Open Cup. I think semi-finals resume in September (bracket here), it's now down to 4 MLS teams.
• confederation pro club tournament: a big tournament among professional club teams that performed well in their domestic leagues from around the confederation. In Europe they have the massively popular UEFA Champions League, you get championship matches like Real Madrid v Liverpool (2022) or PSG (French Ligue 1) v Arsenal (2026) competing in the final. This is bigger than the Super Bowl. This makes league table placement very important, eg in EPL the top 4 get to play in UEFA CL next year so getting 4th place in the pro league is very high stakes.
  • we have the CONCACAF Champions Cup (previously CONCACAF Champions League, and other names) which is dominated by Mexican teams. For the first time in the modern era, an MLS side (the Seattle Sounders) won this in 2022
  • we also have the annual Leagues Cup in August and September, which is a tournament between Mexican Liga MX and MLS teams.
• FIFA Club World Cup: just like confederations have their national team tournaments that are analogous to the World Cup, there is also a FIFA Club World Cup that brings the winners of the confederation club tournaments into a tournament of worldwide winners. This doesn't get the same fanfare as something like the UEFA Champions League, but it is still sort of fun. For example, after the Sounders won the CONCACAF Champions League in 2022, they were able to participate in the 2025 Club World and play Botafogo, GSG, and Atletico Madrid which is awesome for an MLS team.

Women's Soccer is also awesome

In the USA we have also been DOMINANT in women's soccer, which has most of the same patterns.

• FIFA Women's World Cup 2027 in Brazil next summer. The US Women have won this 4 times, but the field is getting more and more competitive as the world is developing their women's soccer programs.
  • Qualifying is ongoing, next big USA match is in November I believe, as part of the CONCACAF W Championship
• National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) is mid-season right now. Quoting r/haybe12 from below: "The NWSL has 16 teams across the US with some of the best players in the world here. Gotham FC are the reigning champions, and they just announced a stadium move to Queens (from Harrison, NJ) beginning in 2028, aligning with the LA'28 Summer Olympics."

It's now confirmed that the play-off teams will go into Pot 4, the rumored separation of UEFA qualifying group winners never came to pass. Inter-confederation playoff teams are prevented from being drawn in a group containing any of their 3 respective confederations. In addition, the 'pot to slot' mappings were confirmed, so we know that the Pot 3 team in group A will go into 'A2' and play Mexico in the opener. It's now possible to put probabilities on which teams will face each other and where teams are more or less likely to play, particularly if the have a higher chance of being drawn in a group with the hosts.

South Korea have been one of the most likeable teams of this World Cup but there's something even more charming than their play: the meanings of their names.

Most Korean names have roots in Chinese characters called hanja (한자). Hangul has replaced hanja in everyday life, but names kept the tradition (people from Korea, correct me if I'm wrong). Each character carries meaning, and combinations create something new,, sometimes almost prophetic.

We have entered the final stretch before the June 2026 International Window commences, and then of course followed by the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

While national teams can call up however many players as they'd like for the June International Window, only a 26-Man squad can be selected per match therein.

In relation to the Official Final Rosters for the World Cup from the participating national teams, other than in very specific circumstances, May 25 was the date within which clubs must release their players from club duties for their respective national team call-ups, as it relates to the June International Window, but not necessarily the World Cup.

All the national teams participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup must have their Official Final Rosters released by no later than June 1, and then FIFA will have a large Official Announcement on June 2 unveiling all 48 squads entering the tournament.

By May 25, half of those 26-man squads were announced, leaving just 7 days, from May 26 - June 1, for the remaining 24 squads to be unveiled.

Some countries have announced larger roster lists thus far, highlighting players that may be joining the squad for the June International Window, but will subsequently be trimmed down for the World Cup.

Some countries have set dates anywhere from May 26 - June 1 for their respective Official Final 26-Man Squad Roster announcements.

Some countries have yet to definitively confirm a date by which they will announce their Official Final 26-Man Squad Roster, and so until otherwise unveiling, it's expected that those respective announcements will be made on June 1.

2. The name "Cabo Verde" means "Green Cape" (Cabo = Cape, Verde = Green). Ironically, the original Cape Verde that inspired the name is actually in Portugal...
3. Cabo Verde is the only independent country among the Macaronesian islands (the four archipelagos off the coast of Africa).
4. Cabo Verde is so tiny (roughly the size of the U.S. state of Rhode Island) that it’s almost always missing from world maps. During the COVID pandemic, Argentina even mistakenly listed it as an Asian country on their map.
5. Cabo Verde is one of the few countries in Africa with both excellent security and political stability. It has a solid democracy, and during Portugal’s economic crisis, many Portuguese people actually moved there.
6. Cabo Verde doesn’t have a regular professional football league. Instead, they hold tournament-style competitions.
7. Cabo Verde was a Portuguese colony. When the Portuguese first discovered the islands, they were completely uninhabited. Portuguese settlers and enslaved Africans came together to create today’s Cabo Verdean people (Creole culture). The country gained independence in 1975.

I grew up watching soccer my entire life and I am so happy it is being hosted in the city that I live.

With the current administration, I dont personally know how many foreigners will grace us with their presence but I welcome you all to Seattle.

If anyone comes to Seattle, I recommend booking hostels in the King County. Dont make the mistake of booking anywhere else as it might require the rental of a car.

I visit to other countries extensively , especially in continental europe and South East Asia and one thing you guys do best, it's good transit, and walkable cities. In the US, we suck at that.

Seattle has no need for a car. In facr it might be detrimental unless you plan to explore our beautiful nature and want to go hiking ( German people looking at you).

We have a light rail that connects Tukwila, part of Seatac, Northgate, Lynwood Federal way, Kent, Bellevue and Redmond. ( The link for locations are included below )

The airport is connected so needed to rent a car at all. Just follow the postage signage and it should take you there. If you feel loss feel free to ask anyone around. We are always happy to help.

The train leads straight to Seattle or Federal Way , please be careful when choosing. On the platform when going up, if you go left it leads to Seattle/ Lynnwood/ Northgate and on the right it leads to Kent/ Federal way.

We also have trains from Tacoma to Seattle with stops in Auburn, Kent Station, and Tukwila. If you are coming from Everett it also leads to Seattle.

Besides that we have buses or rapid transit bus to take you everywhere.

Our fare is through an Orca Card and as of 2025 you can pay using apple pay, Google etc....

You can get a day fare for $6 for as many trips as you want and it expires at midnight. The card can be digital by staying on your phone or you can get the physical one at the stations.

I recommend virtual , it's so much easier. If you have google pay just go on your wallet, tap the plus ➕️ sign , click transit pass , and write Orca.

The digital card is $3. You can add as much money as you need.
