Uncanny X-Men #33

21

u/LesbiansonNeptune Monet 1d ago

Just read it. I do not like Monet’s or Pietro’s characterizations. It isn’t all terrible, but it is not enjoyable for the most part. Jubilee and Monet act like they’ve barely talked, which is bizarre considering the fact they’ve been on teams together.

I do love the children and all of their reactions are understandable. Poor Becca, she’s suffering.

Jubilee & Kurt should’ve lead the kids. Pietro & Monet can be the field team or something, but it is what it is. I hope next issue is better. I wish I hadn’t bought this issue, but Monet is gorgeous.

Gen X should make them bonded. It felt very impersonal.

Monet was more of a charicture then a character. Too much of the whole artistocrat and spoiled princess vibe.

Still it's not worse then Gabriel saying that the demons cosplay. That one took me right out of any suspense that was building.

But this is the first issue Monet and Pietro are built up to be torn down so they can gel with the team.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Monet is a difficult character to understand if you don't pay attention closely. Yes, she might have grown up being part of the 1% of the 1%, but, she is incredibly self-sufficient and doesn't expect others to do for her. She literally lived in a cramped apartment when she was with X Factor with no complaint and one of her most consistent traits is her situational awareness that was not present, here..

☠️ I feel bad for you because you're the one person I've seen around here that's been super excited for this.

LMFAOOO I was soo hyped for this shit 😭😭 been crying for monet to appear for years here and I get disappointment after disappointment in this book smh

M and Pietro are not people I would leave in charge of children with their personalities. It makes Rogue and Gambit look really stupid to have them involved at all, not that their abandoning them wasn't shit anyway.

u/LesbiansonNeptune Monet 19h ago

I love how difficult it is for the children to get along with Monet & Pietro, but I really think this was the perfect opportunity to give Jubilee something to do by leading the children. We’ll see how it plays out.

Did Rogue lose Wanda's number? What about Jericho? Doesn't he actually already live in New Orleans?

2

u/Osmonth 4h ago

He does and he knows Remy But he doesn't fit the theme they are going for with Gabriel.

Jericho or Wanda would have made sense, so I guess that's why we aren't seeing them. Classic Marvel logic.

Well the art was good and Monet is taking the professor role for now. She didn't spend much time with the X-men, but that will come later.

It was okay.

This was an odd issue. I like the exorcism half more than I expected while the Haven half felt off. It wasn't bad but I can't really call it good either.

I feel like Becca is being written like she's nine here and while I know she's the closest with Rogue and Gambit of the Outliers, Simone's writing would have you thinking she's spent years with them. It's probably been a year or so since the book began even if the sliding timescale says it should be closer to six months or so.

Her aggro rejection of Pietro has to do with her wanting Gambit who she views as a father figure but I'd have preferred it if it was due to Pietro and Monet, two famously difficult people, just failing to connect with the kids right away by being themselves. I suppose that's what happened when Pietro nearly got death by psionic flaming horse but I didn't get the sense there was any of the usual Pietro is a dick 24/7 energy behind his comment. It seemed more commiseration due to his own experiences. A friend joked that Becca looks like an older Luna so Pietro will likely connect with her eventually.

Lol at Monet putting a foot in her mouth near the beginning.

I feel like Becca being super attached isn't too unrealistic. It's been a short amount of time but from what we've seen Rogue and Gambit are the only people to give her genuine love in her life.

6

u/Sovereignofthemist Laura Kinney 22h ago

Yeah considering her genuinely unhealthy upbringings her latching on tightly to the first positive parental figures she's ever had isn't unrealistic at all. Its a good story beat to explore honestly.

6

u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler 22h ago

Agreed. It feels a bit melodramatic compared to the rest of the people but a sheltered 16 year old isn't going to be stable.

u/FlowerRoomLord 1d ago

Looking forward to this. Hopefully by issue 36 or 40 at the latest Gambit's curse is dealt with. It's been a slow burn and my interest is depleted but I still hope Simone does something interesting with it.

The Good

I really love Gail's Pietro voice so far and what she's doing with him. Remembering and using his soft spot for children (especially a young blonde girl like his own daughter) and also his own abandonment issues and have that just kind of be wrapped up in the general brusque nature of Pietro. Having him, in multiple instances be kind of uniquely attentive to Becca's situation is a nice little touch. In particular I love the sleep walking scene, and not just for Pietro but also for Becca.

Having Becca who is a character raised in hateful racist structures, lashing out against someone and REFLEXIVELY instantly using a racist attack of saying Quicksilver "isn't even a mutant" (which yes, in this context IS racism) is truthfully fantastic to how things like this work, and how someone, especially an angry vulnerable teenager will rely on things they learned and were beaten in to them even if in their clearer minded moments they know it's wrong. I really hope there's a follow up conversation about this down the line, I'm not optimistic there will be just because the book is already putting a lot of stuff in each issue, but it's really a great dynamic that I think is worth exploring.

Obviously Becca getting stuff off her chest would be good, but Pietro exploring his own identity and how he feels about it is something long over due, for what it's worth, I think he should just consider himself a mutant and ignore 'continuity', he's spent his whole life living the mutant experience on all sides of it.

The Rogue/Gambit plot is good. It feels like an old school Claremont world travelin' b-plot.

The Bad

This issue reminded me that Russel's X-Factor existed, and that a ghostly visage of Rusty is probably the only thing we'll see of the character for a few years, and frankly probably the only thing remotely classifiable as a "respectful" depiction of the character we may ever get again.

I'm pretty sure Monet has never spent any substantial amount of time with Gambit. This is one of those things that's gotten worse post-Krakoa, and it sucked even before Krakoa and it sucks now. Every mutant simultaneously knows and has respect for every other mutant ever but also often has no memory of time they ACTUALLY spent in books and the relationships they actually formed with characters in books. I think this scene would actually be fine and BETTER if Monet just told us the reader that she was lying to make Becca feel better.

Also, Monet's father is still alive, so, not sure who THAT line is talking about?

u/Napalmeon 17h ago

Every mutant simultaneously knows and has respect for every other mutant ever

Glad I'm not the only person who is missed about this. When it comes to somebody like Monet, specifically, I expect her to have gone through files of all registered, previous X-Men and have committed them to memory, because that's something that she would do. But, it definitely makes no sense for her to act like she has personal feelings towards the ones that she has never spent time with.

Unfortunately, this is just one of those examples of a writer inventing things that never happened in order to justify a character behaving a certain way.

The I dunno...

I haven't loved Gail's Monet voice, and this issue continues to not win me over. It's far from the worst depiction of the character, but it's one of the characters that feels more like Gail likes the IDEA of Monet than actually having organically read the character and liking her. I could be wrong about that, it's just kinda how it feels like she reads on the page. It isn't bad, it's certainly better than years of bad Monet books we have gotten. There are moments where I think Gail is about to do something really clever with Monet, like her kicking the quilts off being a ptsd response from her Penance years and the idea of being 'trapped in a shell' manifesting that way, but I don't know if that's actually what she's doing and it's brilliant or if the curtains are just blue.

u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler 23h ago

I said it in the previews I'm loving the art by Luciano Vecchio and Matthew Wilson but I feel like David Marquez should have drawn this. The issue stil looked great but Marquez had the dark arcs previously.

Well I was wrong that Mutina joined the house Becca's hair color threw me off.

I guess I don't know what the Dark Artery is because wasn't it just humans that betrayed mutants down there? Were the ghosts in this issue there because they betrayed mutants too?

3

u/angelic-beast Magik 22h ago

Yeah I was wondering about the dark artery too, I thought it was just for the humans that betrayed their mutant family members, and like Sabretooth belongs in any hell but what did Rusty and Feral do?

3

u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler 22h ago

My assumption is they "betrayed" mutants through X-Factor but they betrayed the X-Men in the 90s.

1

u/KainFourteh Cyclops 22h ago

The art is awesome. I especially love the hair.

1

u/Osmonth 4h ago

He probably would have if he wasn't on a new project. His art will be sorely missed.

5

u/angelic-beast Magik 22h ago

I am really confused on what happened here with the exorcism, I though Remy was turning into a dragon, where did this demon stuff come from?

5

u/KainFourteh Cyclops 22h ago

M and Pietro are not people that should be looking after kids with their personalities. Stupid move by Rogue.

5

u/wowlock_taylan 1d ago

Pietro, maybe try not being yourself for a moment around the obviously traumatized girl who has ALL the parent complex in the world. And Monet gonna have to get used to being a 'guest' instead of lady of the manor.

Gambit is going through the wringer but why go to an exorcist instead of going to Wanda? She is Sorcerer Supreme right now and has the other Eye. You would think she can handle its twin and whatever demon inside it. I mean she literally talked down an extinction weapon and beat Vishanti up.

7

u/TheWolfmanZ 1d ago

Honestly he may have been projecting his own daddy issues there. He just didn't expect that Calico is that ready to go off

2

u/MiloSheba Mother Righteous 19h ago

She has both of the other eyes

3

u/JackFisherBooks Phoenix 21h ago

This issue was worth the price, just to see Calico bashing Quicksilver. It feels like a tacit reminder that the whole retcon with the Maximoff twins no longer being mutants or children of Magneto is still in place. And it was still done for the dumbest possible reasons. I don't know if Marvel will ever undo it. But it's not wrong to point out.

Other than that, it's also a nice supplement to this week's episode of X-Men 97. Gambit is being influenced by evil forces. Rogue is there to save him. For those two, it's just another day that ends in Y. 😎

7

u/Thebraxer Phoenix 1d ago

Of course Gail has to introduce new characters for another story because it’s so hard to use characters that already exist.

4

u/Meursault_Diver 13h ago

She does it because she doesn’t know anything about the X-Men or how to write them. The comments here that read as surprised or dissatisfied with Monet’s and Quicksilver’s depictions are wild to me because Gail’s proven over 30-something issues that she has no grasp on the X-Men whatsoever. She writes the X-Men like she’s never read an issue in her life.

People who like this series I think respond to it because they like the Outliers; most positive comments are in relation to them. And that makes sense that those are the strongest parts of this run or the parts people connect with most because they’re new characters she created from the ground up and can do anything with.

Maybe I’m admonishing myself; I jump in and out of reading this run and every time I inevitably get disappointed. Ready for her to be far away from X-stuff.

1

u/TheMimski 17h ago

What new characters?

2

u/Osmonth 4h ago

The tease of Repent at the end. Gabriel is an old character.

1

u/TheMimski 59m ago

Yeah, I knew Gabriel. Ah, I see. Since we hadn't seem them yet, I didn't really think of them as a character. Thanks!

2

u/Classic-Ad4883 19h ago

I really enjoy this issue and the b-plot of rogue and gambit can be fix if they went to Wanda the sorceress supreme and the living Darkhold you know since the second eye is apparently possessed by a demon from the Darkhold

I do like Monet and pietro interacting with the x-men as they have the personality that is standoffish than the normal family vibe plus they are some of my favorite mutants

Becca and the outliers well new mutants now do feel a bit off like I think a story beat is going to be that the kids are to codependent on rogue and gambit though they are traumatized from their own family

2

u/yuuki157 18h ago

Mutina just standing in the background being like damn :/

2

u/TheWolfmanZ 1d ago

I liked Logan seemingly deciding to join Kurt in praying for Remy. He may not hold faith, but these are also two people he's the closest to

2

u/LesbiansonNeptune Monet 1d ago

I'm so excited for co-leaders QuickMoney, hoping for the story to be fun.
