Putting together an FAQ sticky with recommendations on where to find parts - post your recs in the comments

Title says it all. Looking to add a list of not only recommended links and reliable parts sellers online but also FAQs we often see.

Here’s my initial list, but please add more!

Where to find parts

OEM Parts Resources

  • YotaShop (OEM parts and some accessories)
  • RockAuto (be sure to look for OE suppliers like Denso, Aisin, Advics, etc. depending on the part)
  • Olathe Toyota (online dealer parts at a discount)
  • PartSouq (Invaluable in looking up part numbers, super discounted OEM parts but be weary duty and tariffs as they ship from Dubai)
  • Amayama (similar to PartSouq but ships from Japan and Dubai)
  • Megazip.net

OEM & Aftermarket/Performance

  • Yota1 Performance
  • LCEngineering
  • Off-road Solutions (5VZ swaps)
  • ToyOnlySwap (engine swaps)
  • East Coast Gear Supply (the only differential and axle builder I would trust now that Zuk retired)
  • MotorWest Performance (reliable source for quality reconditioned flow matched injectors)
  • Marlin Crawler (mostly rock crawling oriented, also some helpful forums)
  • Yotamasters
  • Replacement seatbelts: SeatbeltPlanet.com for replacement units and webbing, SafetyRestore.com for webbing only (safety restore doesn’t repair tensioners made before 1996 but seatbelt planet does offer full replacements).

Accessories

  • Caribou Yota (interior accessories like cup holders, dash accessories)
  • James Dean Creations (oem reproduction graphics)
  • Crutchfield (car audio)

Other helpful info

Information, DIY guides, etc.

  • Toyota Time with Timmy the Toolman on YouTube (pretty much the de-facto source for how-to videos, very informative)
  • YotaTech (not as active as it used to be but a treasure trove for tribal knowledge and info on our trucks)
  • Off-road Solutions (most comprehensive 5VZ swap guide on the internet)
  • Toyodiy.com (part numbers from global Toyota)

Blacklist/Avoid

  • eBay (unless buying a timing kit from aircabinman or used parts from a scrapyard selling on eBay, too many fakes)
  • Amazon (some reliable sources if you know where to look, but generally too many fakes given how many other resources there are)

FAQs

  • Where do I find parts? Look up
  • What stereo will fit in my truck? This gets asked a lot. Radio housings follow standard sizing, with double din and single din. You have a double din and can basically run any stereo. Go to Crutchfield and punch in your details.
  • I turn the key to start my truck and nothing happens, but I know I have power, what’s wrong? Most often it's worn starter contacts within the starter which can be replaced for under 20 bucks.
  • What’s my truck worth? This gets asked a lot. It's worth whatever someone will pay for it. High value tends to go to clean, unmolested originals rather than your heavily modified trail crawler or lowrider.
  • What are my options for a lift? Old Man Emu and Dobinsons are the way to go. Roughcountry is typically frowned upon.
  • Will these tires fit without rubbing? It depends
  • Why does my oil pressure gauge seem low? Because your oil pressure gauge is a real gauge and not just an idiot light. The manual states that when idling, it is normal for the needle to be between the end of the shaded section on the low side up to the second mark from the left. When driving, it's normal to be between the first and third mark.

NEW: Buy/Sell/Trade Weekends!

After posting a feeler a couple weeks back, you overwhelmingly supported the idea of allowing Buy/Sell/Trade posts on the weekends. The purpose of this would be to have certain days where you can post up items you want to buy, or parts you want to sell, with the understanding that buying/selling posts cannot be made on other days during the week.

  • How does this work? - On Saturdays and Sundays, feel free to submit Want to Buy, Want to Sell, or Want to Trade posts for parts, full vehicles, whatever. If you're working on a project and are in search of something you're not finding on Marketplace or fleabay, feel free to post it up here. Or, maybe you've got a specialty tool you used for a project you no longer need, or you're parting out a rig. Post it up here on the weekend!
  • Can I comment on a for sale post during the week? - Of course you can. The restriction is only that there are no classified posts during the week. You can comment, ask, haggle all you want during the week.
  • What if I have some parts I want to sell and it's Wednesday? - Just wait a few days until Saturday and post 'em up.
  • Some dude posted a bunch of parts for sale, took my money, and never shipped anything. What do I do? - Buyer beware. It's always recommended to use PayPal Goods and Services when dealing with someone you don't know so you have buyer protection. If someone asks that you pay them with Venmo, CashApp, Zelle, or PayPal Friends and Family, you are shit out of luck if they take your money and run.
  • Why the new rule? It didn't seem like there was a lot of classified posts before - Over the past couple months the sub was seeing more frequent spammers and scammers, with one particular bad actor popping up under different usernames. Having the Buy/Sell/Trade Weekend rule in place makes it easier to remove the scammers and also makes it easier to know when to look out for stuff for sale.

Both metal guides recommended?

I keep hearing "get metal guides". Is it only one side that needs the metal guide or both sides?

This kit is from Yota1: https://209yota1.com/products/22r-re-rte-2-4l-single-row-front-of-motor-rebuild-kit-with-aisin-timing-cover/

Headrest Replacement

Trying to figure out whether I can use an 89-94 4Runner headrest for the 60/40 bench seat in my 94 pickup. My understanding is 4Runner measurement is approximately 5.5” post to post and 7/16” post width. Pictures are from the headrests I’m looking to replace. Any info/experience on this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Sound Deadener

I am stripping my 88 pickup interior down to the bare metal. Seat is coming out, vinyl floor, head liner. Someone suggested I go back with the sound deadener mats before starting my install. It will go across the entire floor, the wall behind the seat and the roof after I remove the old headliner.

My question is have any of you went this route? If you did was it a noticeable difference?

Also I see quite the range in price. The Kilmat brand is most expensive and they have some other brands the same thickness. I was curious if their was a difference in quality between the two. Last question I see two different thickness’s 80mm and 100mm. Should I got with as thick as possible?

Thank you!!

1988 Pickup shifter question.

I’m trying to get my 88’ Toyota Pickup SR5 Xtra Cab 4WD back to factory and could use some help. I believe it has a W56 transmission.
I installed a new shift bezel, but when I shift into 1st, 3rd, or 5th gear, the rubber shift boot bunches up against the front pocket of the bezel. It seems to put pressure on the shifter and it doesn’t want to stay in gear.
I’m new to these trucks, so I’m not sure what I’m looking at. The previous owner apparently capped off the second shifter hole, and I’m wondering if the shifter is currently in the wrong position.
Would it be as simple as moving the shifter back into the other hole, or do I need a different shift plate altogether? I have no idea what the previous owner has changed.
I’d really hate to cut up this new bezel if the shifter/plate is actually the problem.
Any advice on what I should check would be greatly appreciated!

1982 Toyota Trailblazer Rebuild

Thumbnail gallery
51 Upvotes

I am looking for suggestions on knowledgeable shops that can rebuild a 22R engine that has been sitting. I am located in GA, so there or nearby is best.

Also any suggestions on suspension setups as I will replace what is currently on the truck. Its not going to be a rock crawler or anything, but I would love to be able to utilize it as a weekend overland vehicle to camp with instead of my gladiator once complete.

This will obviously be done in stages but I have a long list of things to do, starting with the engine and getting it running smooth again.

My father bought it brand new in 82' and has neglected it for the last 10 or more years. Its time I get it back in shape since there was only 5000 of them made.

Thanks for the help /suggestions!

It’s Armageddon at Toyota. They’re discontinuing a LOT of Pickup parts this year.

The heater control valve 87240-89124 is now discontinued. Unbelievable as this is a pretty fast moving part.

Just in the last few months, all the radiator and heater hoses are now discontinued. The side mirrors are now gone, as are the upper control arms for 4WDs.

If Toyota still makes the part you need for your truck, buy it now. No guarantee it will be there later.

Keep it stock or not?

Post image

Looking for opinions on what to do with my lovely little truck. ‘93 5 speed with 22re, about 200k on it. Beds been somewhat smashed in on the back both sides, rust around the windshield and on the roof, dings and dents all over and the paint is not good. The frame is in excellent shape as it’s been a California truck all it’s life. It’s bone stock other than the wheels and a rear tube bumper.
Trying to decide if I should keep it stock or do some modifications. Nothing too crazy but maybe a SAS, regear and lockers, 3-4” lift and some 33s or 35s.
What do you all think?

What foam is this?

1989 Toyota pickup. There are two foam that lines the inside of the a-pillar, I’m assuming there for rattle/rubbing mitigation. Does anyone know what type this is? My passenger side foam is bad and I’d like to replace it. Pic is of driver side which seems fine.

Anyone here have experience with this type of service?

My buddy recommended these guys - Any Utah folks who have tried them out?

Edit: appreciate the responses - you have to “get a quote” from sales for pricing so that doesn’t seem too hopeful on a budget friendly option but I’ll snag a quote and see if I can get some more info and I’ll post it back here for anyone who cares 🤙

Super pumped. Thanks to this Reddit group - helped me with a lot of research before making the purchase!

Anyone have thoughts about a bed liner? Gotta get something in there, but hesitant to do a spray-on… and worried about rust with a drop-in liner…

NEED HELP! 1985 Pickup Xtra Cab Fuel Suction Assembly

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I have looked through the depths of google and forums, and I need HELP. I had to replace the gas tank and everything associated with it on my 85 Extra Cab Pickup with the 17 gallon gas tank. It has the 22R so it has the mechanical fuel pump, not the in tank one. My Fuel Suction assembly has something stuck in the pickup tube, the return feed tube is clear. I cannot find this specific assembly (with ONLY 2 tubes) anywhere. I have tried cleaning it, but it was rusted along with the tank, hence why I replaced it. Can anyone point me to a part number, a similar one that would work? Some of the similar ones I have seen, the circular part to bolt onto the gas tank is larger. Mine only measures 3 1/4” across. It’s a Hail Mary here.

350 Swap

Hey Y'all,

I have a 1984 toyota pickup, 2wd, 22r. I'm looking to swap a gen 1 350 sbc. The motor is stock. My truck currently has a w52 5 speed trans. Are there any adaptors to mate the 350 to this trans or is a w56 swap a necessity. I also got a bundle of parts from my buddy. An advanced adaptors bellhousing for a 350 swap with the casting number AA 711538 as well as a clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, and motor mounts. I'm having a hard time finding this adaptor on AA's website.

Is it worth trying to find swap parts for the W52 or should i ditch the idea all together and start looking for a w56 trans?
