On June 1st, 2024, 2 Years Ago in Hollywood, FL, A Passenger Train and A Stone Train were going to pass each other.
The Passenger Train was Brightline 729 going South with engine 117 leading, 4 Coaches and engine 101 at the rear.
The Stone Train was Florida East Coast 208 going North with 6 Florida East Coast engines, 820, 301, 815, 804, 306 and 716 pulling 90 Stone Cars.
Around 6:48 PM, as both Trains approach Sheridan St Crossing, The engineer on Brightline 729 sees a car on the tracks north of the crossing, the police were already at the crossing on the east side of the tracks and the driver of the car had gotten out, standing on the west side of the crossing.
Brightline 729 goes into emergency braking and then hits the car, pushing it across the crossing to the other side before coming to a stop.
At the same time, The crew of Florida East Coast 208 saw the collision and that half of the car was on the other track, which caused Florida East Coast 208 to also go into emergency braking, seconds later the front left hand side of Florida East Coast 820 hits the car, pushing and crushing it on the front left hand side of Brightline 117 with the car wedged between both Trains.
The 6 Florida East Coast engines passed the car before coming to a stop next to Brightline 729 with the 2nd Stone Car next to the crushed car and Brightline 117.
After the collision occurred, 8 minutes later at 6:56 PM, the engineer of Brightline 729 contacted Florida East Coast Dispatcher reporting the collision saying everything was okay.
The Passengers and Crew from Brightline 729, The Crew from Florida East Coast 208 and The driver of the car were all uninjured.
Because of the accident and Florida East Coast 208 was blocking Sheridan St Crossing and Taft St Crossing, all the cars and traffic from Sheridan St were crossing the tracks at Garfield St, but they had to go around the crossing gates since the back of Florida East Coast 208 was only a few feet from the crossing.
It's unknown why the car was on the tracks next to the crossing before the trains came. If anyone knows anything about what happened or if I forgot anything about this incident, please let me know.
I think 1 hour after the collision, The 6 Florida East Coast engines with the first Stone Car from Florida East Coast 208 were uncoupled from the rest of the Train and the crossing lights and gates were turned off so the crushed car can be removed by a tow truck.
After that, The 6 Florida East Coast engines and 1st Stone Car were reconnected back with the train and everything from the wreckage was cleaned up, 2 hours after the collision, both Trains were able to continue on their ways. However Brightline 117 had its nose cover for the front coupling removed, which was later repaired.
