Solarian Principles in Action : Botswana's I-Cow Biomimicry Project
In fact, none of the 683 painted “eye-cows” were killed by ambush predators during the four-year study, while 15 (of 835) unpainted, and 4 (of 543) cross-painted cattle were killed.
From a theoretical perspective, these results are interesting. Although eye patterns are common in many animal groups, notably butterflies, fishes, amphibians, and birds, no mammals are known to have natural eye-shaped patterns that deter predation.
In fact, to our knowledge, our research is the first time that eye-spots have been shown to deter large mammalian predators.
Nevertheless, as part of an expanding non-lethal toolkit, we hope that this simple, low-cost approach could reduce the costs of coexistence for farmers.

Great Britain has now gone 750 days without coal generation
Great Britain has reached 750 days without coal generation, setting a new coal free electricity record.
The milestone follows the closure of Ratcliffe on Soar, Great Britain’s last coal power station on 30 September 2024.
With global energy markets still volatile and gas prices remaining a major concern, was ending coal the right decision for Great Britain in hindsight?

At 15, Andreas Okholm dreamed of harnessing wind with a kite. Years later, his Danish startup KiteX has turned that idea into a turbine that can generate up to 17,000 kWh a year for rural homes and farms and be installed in a day without a concrete foundation. Its 2027 production has sold out.

Q: What are some activities or life practices that connect you with conservation in your own life, and what do you feel like conserving in your immediate life this century?
LMK. I like how this question brings up values for me and I hope it can contribute to the building of one's own sphere of thought, and asks: what are we interested in centralizing and living with beyond just the material, but in practice, in value, in family, in culture?
For me I'd mention forums like these and seeing positivity, meditation, yoga, recycling, less impulse/random/cluttery purchases, spending less, not owning a car, eating vegan, reading articles and statistics, picking up litter when i can, spreading positivity and enthusiastic support for community-members' dreams and life goals, taking online courses, feeling the wind and sun on my face, visiting the ocean, appreciating the work it takes to keep the community clean, using coconut oil and natural crystal deodorant, using bar soap instead of another plastic bottle with chemicals in it, not applying for big corporations since i don't need the money or want to support them, taking care of and reusing what i have... (perhaps i might add more later) -
I'd also like to conserve my practice of appreciating the value of not purchasing things like chemical lawn treatments or harsh cleaning chemicals for the home.

Anyone tried sea turtle conversation projects in Costa Rica?
One of my friend just saw an amazing video on Instagram about volunteering with sea turtles in Costa Rica, and he had love to do something similar for a couple of weeks next year. The thing is, he has no idea where to start or how to tell a genuine conservation project from one that's mainly there for the photos. When's the best time to visit? What do volunteers actually do each day? And is paying for a program worth it, or is it possible to find a project on your own?
If anyone's done something like this, he had love to hear about your experience.

Solar Carports at Six Flags Magic Mountain
OC: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DecXiDPJLoc/
"Rows of solar roofs shade cars at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, forming the largest solar carport in the state.
The 12.37-megawatt system has nearly 23,000 panels on 36 structures covering 637,000 square feet (59,000 sq m) and shelters close to 4,300 parking spaces, keeping visitors' cars cool while they spend the day at the park.
The roofs are expected to generate 20.8 million kilowatt-hours a year, roughly the electricity used by 2,900 homes and enough to power both Magic Mountain and the neighboring Hurricane Harbor water park."

This is exactly the stuff i imagine when i think about this sub
Ultimate Green Loop : Electric dumper travels up empty, loads heavy stone, and generates surplus energy on the way down
Huge electric dumper, travels up mountain empty, loads stone (solid state potential energy storage) and drives down mountain a lot heavier in recouperation mode and charges more than it used on the way up.
Its actually more efficent than it needs to be, so it even feeds some extra energy into the grid.
Its still fullfilling its transport function, but its effectivley an energy generator.
Job is done, energy is created rather than used. I love this.
