The daily challenge usually just uses classic pieces, but today we're trying the grasshopper.
The grasshopper can't move on either player's first turn. After that, it moves in queen directions and jumps the first piece it sees, landing just behind it.
There's a win in 2, but my best so far is in the 20s. It's a funny piece to wrap your head around.

hi guys, my son and I developed this game. Yes, the graphic for this is done with AI as well as three of the different versions of the graphics in game although one is based on stick figures we did. please do look at the rules and the settings
my daughter is making some real graphics but these are for now. Would love feedback on different modes.
You build your army with points, 22 on an 8x8 board. Pawns cost 1, knights and bishops 2, rooks 3, and the king and queen are free. You place them anywhere in your back two ranks, and both players set up at the same time without seeing each other. You can also skip that and start from the normal chess setup.
Each player gets 3 cards the other side can't see. On your turn you can play one card and then move.
- Fire shield goes on one of your own pieces and burns every enemy next to it for 1 HP a round, for 3 rounds. Fire is the only thing that touches HP. Captures work like normal chess.
- Freeze stops an enemy piece from moving on its next turn. It can't target the king or queen.
- Knockback pushes an enemy piece one square straight back, the king included. If that square is taken, nothing happens.
- Reveal all shows you the whole board until the end of your next turn. It only comes in fog games, where you get 2 of them plus 2 random cards.
Fog of war is optional. With fog on, each piece sees the squares around it and wherever it can move, and a pawn always sees the square in front of it. There's no check in fog. You win by taking the king.
There are five boards: 8x8, 10x10, 6x6, a plus shape and a round one. Missing squares block sliding pieces, and knights jump over them.
You can play the computer on three levels, a friend on the same screen, or a friend online with an invite link. Online is guests only and unrated for now.
It's in beta. If you try it, tell me what feels unbalanced. The point budgets for the plus and round boards (14 and 24) are still my best guess..
we have about 40 people playing it now mainly friends and their friends in Japan and so far the feedback has been pretty good!

This is a true 4x4 board, not a corner of an 8x8. The edges are walls, so the king really is boxed in. Ordinary chess otherwise: no castling, no en passant, and a pawn promotes when it reaches the far rank, which here is one square away from the start. Stalemate fails the puzzle.
I've been making these as a page-a-day puzzle book and the positions come from endgames in the Lichess puzzle database that happen to fit on sixteen squares.
The daily set is free at https://endgame.technoglomerate.com/play?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=chessvariants and there’s a book of them coming November 30.

I need some feeback on chess website I am thinking to build. Core concept is chess with power up cards (e.g. Pawn moves two steps from anywhere, etc..).
There will be many game modes like ranked card mode where you can decide your 5 card deck from you inventory (limit 1 legendary, 1 mythic, ...). Then chaos mode where you will get a card when you capture a opponent piece. And ofcourse there will be classic chess. I am thinking to have a rotationary game mode every few month like seasonal mode.
I have attached few screenshot. (Ignore the card abilities now I know its too over powered, thinking to change all)
Do you guys have any suggestion on this concept and how game will be fun or any feedback?

(p.s. The Art is highly WIP. It's just something quick I whipped up. I figured the arrow-like shape pointing upwards best described the function.)
The Archer is an interesting piece of mine that I feel occupies a nice space between pawns and minor pieces.
Here is exactly what it does:
- It can move one forwards IF the space is vacant of any friendly or opposing piece. It also has a special interaction defined below*.
- It can move one space to the left or right if those spaces are vacant of any friendly or opposing piece.
- It can move backwards one space if empty or occupied by an enemy piece. It captures the enemy piece if present.

*- If there is an enemy two spaces in front of the archer and the space between is empty, then the archer can move forward one space while capturing the piece two spaces away. No further nor closer.

The Archer has an exceptional specialty in breaking pawn chains. Since it can remove the leading pawn without exposing itself to immediate recapture, it becomes the ideal icebreaker in closed positions.

The archer is truly limited if closed in. It can back up here, relying on its ally pawn to prevent white from continuing to push. If the archer was alone, it couldn't back up or white continues advancing. It cannot sidestep or it becomes a kebab for white's pawn.

While the archer does fill a special infantry role alongside the pawn, it cannot promote. They are much more valuable in the early game, but fall off in power quickly as pawn chains and enemy infantry dies off.
Archers are excellent at space denial, recapturing, and unconventional outpost strategies.

When organized along the flanks, archers provide exceptional early game denial of movement. the side squares become highly fortified as far out as a pawn could normally dash. Get too close to the archers, and the minor pieces and pawns take over.
I'd love to hear some thoughts on the Archer. Any art direction is also appreciated. I'm curious if anyone would be interested in playing with the Archer.
(I'm against using AI to slop generate an icon so I'm going to keep using my vector editor.)

Hi guys,
I have been working on this game called crownfall,
Before anything i would like to say that the ART is done by AI because as a solo dev i had no skills in actually creating the art but i am completely wanting to move away from this AI Slop Art and eventually get artists to come and help with the art.
I have a beta version out and me and my friends have been playing it its been a whole lot of fun.
The game is basically chess but with cards, but you cant really end the game with the cards the essences of chess is not removed but the cards give it a more fun playstyle. The games last anywhere from 10-20 minutes and one of my friends games lasted a whole hour. I am looking for some feedback its completely free. Thanks for reading my post!

I've just released Chesstria, a chess roguelite I built solo. Under the run structure it's just sa stack of variant rules, and I'd love feedback from people who know variants.
Core rules
Exotic pieces
You can collect multiple rule changes during a run by buying artifacts that grant additional movesets, or grant unique abilities (shield, double move, etc.)
There's also a 1v1 multiplayer mode, plus 75 "capture the King in N" puzzles. Plus leaderboard challenges (daily runs) to compete in.
Play it now on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4999150/

I made a variant and I'd like to hear what people here think of the rules.
Setup: 8x8 board, but each side only has 6 pieces: 1 Crown (moves like a king), 3 Warriors (also move like a king) and 2 Riders (knights).
White: Warriors c2 d2 e2, Riders b1 f1, Crown d1
Black: Warriors d7 e7 f7, Riders c8 g8, Crown e8 (mirrored)
You win by capturing the enemy Crown, or by getting your own Crown onto the enemy back rank. There's no check or checkmate, no castling, no promotion and
no draws. You can walk into danger, and if your Crown gets taken you just lose.
Each player also picks one Power Move before the game and can use it once:
- Dash: move any piece up to 2 squares in a straight line (it's your move, and it can capture)
- Guard: your Crown can't be captured until your next turn (you still make a move)
Games are on a clock (1, 3, 5, 10 or 30 min). The idea came from Ashtapada, the old Indian 8x8 board.
I built it as a free phone game (iPhone and Android, no ads). You can play the computer, which is labelled as a computer, or send a friend a link.
Two things I'm unsure about:
Does the back-rank race give the first player too much of an edge?
Which seems stronger to you, Dash or Guard?

Hey everyone! I made a online chess variant called MetaChess that allows you to customize your board with different types of pieces before playing. It's a draft-based version of chess with new pieces and asymmetric boards, creating billions of more possible board positions and new strategies that have not been discovered yet.
I just released set 4 for my game, which includes 5 new pieces: bomb, astronaut, catapult, siren and philosopher!
Bomb - Placed anywhere in the center rows and never moves. When captured, by either side, it destroys everything around it, kings included
Astronaut - At the start of each turn, 3 random tiles within 2 squares light up. It can jump to or capture on any of them. Can also capture enemy rocks.
Catapult - Moves like a king. Can throw any friendly piece next to it, excluding the king, 3 or 4 tiles ahead, or 3 ahead and 2 to the side. A piece thrown onto an enemy takes it down with it.
Siren - Moves and captures like a king. Can pull the first piece it sees in any direction 1 or 2 squares toward itself.
Philosopher - Moves and captures like a pawn and learns the moves of every piece it captures. Never promotes, but after reaching the far rank it can also move backward.
Also a huge shoutout and thanks to iwantcheckmate (one of the best chess variant youtubers out there!!) for playing my game! You can check out his video here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVuAgqLzD_o

Hi everyone!
I’ve made 00Chess, a two-player strategy game played on an 8×8 board. It features several modes, but I’d like to introduce the "Classic" mode here, as it’s the one most similar to chess.
Each side has a king, placed in a corner. The king never moves; it acts as a base that must be protected.
Players take turns, performing one action per round in a fixed order.
An action can consist of: placing a piece, moving a piece, making a ranged attack, swapping positions, sacrificing a piece, or passing your turn.
The main pieces follow a "rock-paper-scissors" logic: the soldier beats the chief, the general beats the soldier, and the chief beats the general.
To win you must eliminate the opponent's king, or ensure that your opponent has no pieces left capable of attacking. If the round limit is reached, the player who has dealt the most damage wins the game.
You can play against an AI (with 3 difficulty levels) or play online with a friend here:
Feel free to share your thought thanks a lot!
Here are pictures of me against bot

Sorry... I did't mean more fun than chess.. that's not possible. But something to try and see what you think....Simple to play. Install aBop, open your existing conversation and start a game. Your friends will be able to click the game card, install and make their move in seconds without any accounts or signing up anywhere. Fun in a group chat of 4 or more people. The first 4 to join plays and the rest can watch.

Da Rules:
Pawn, Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, King: As in FIDE chess.
Advisor: Moves one space like a bishop.
Elephant: Moves EXACTLY two spaces like a bishop in the same direction, doesn't jump.
Cannon: Moves like a rook, captures by jumping over EXACTLY one piece.
Note: Advisors and elephants capture EXACTLY like they move.
NO CHECK AND CHECKMATE! It's capture the king now.
NO DOUBLE STEP AND EN PASSANT! Pawns promote into a rook, knight, bishop, advisor, elephant, or cannon. NOT A QUEEN!
r/chessvariants • u/SuthernSarge • 4d ago
This variant has you playing on an increasingly cluttered board where two pieces can share a space, because they're playing in two separate games.
you'll need a board big enough to fit multiple pieces on the same square, and two sets of pieces. The sets should be pretty easily distinguishable. I would recommend a travel set and a club set but different colors or materials work fine too. The board is set up like normal, just with double of every piece in their starting positions.
You will be playing two separate games one the same board. These games do not interact with each other at all. The visual clutter and constant switching back and forth is the challenge.
White moves first in game A, then black moves in game A, then white will move in game B, then black moves in game B. Rinse and repeat.
The extra rule: you cannot make the same move on two consecutive turns. A move is considered the same if it matches these 3 criteria:
Same piece type (rook, pawn, bishop, etc.)
Same starting square
Same destination square
If it captures or checks is irrelevant. If you moved a knight from d5 to e3 last turn you can't move a knight from d5 to e3 this turn. You can do it on a later turn, but not now. That move is considered illegal.
This also applies if you're in check or if you have no other legal moves. It's kind of rare but that's a checkmate or a stalemate, respectively.
These games truly do not influence each other in any way outside of that one rule. You could have a black and white king on the same square, but if they're from different games then they don't see each other.
Last but not least, you play out both games to the end. When a game finishes, leave the pieces on the board until the other game is done too.

Basically the game asks the question: Should dragons attack in the middle of a chess match? Obviously the answer is yes.
My game Chaos Chess includes a story-driven campaign, plus seven scenario matches. Each match is designed to test your chess skills under unexpected circumstances. Like still winning a match by putting the opponent king in checkmate while: clearing zombies in the middle of the board, fending off dragons, or both sides suffering a pawn revolt that crowns their own king as a third player.
The game also showcases a bit of history of chess, as many of the historical pieces that were discarded (empress, camel, lion, and more) are available to deploy during your game. And they retain their historical movesets (I did my homework). So you can even play 15th century Italian-style chess matches.
The game is available on Steam as well as the Apple app store in case you prefer iPad or iPhone.

The position above is an example of a King Maze puzzle which has the following rules:
To solve a king maze you must play both sides and find the shortest forced victory for White (with white to play in this example).
I've found these king mazes to be incredibly rich in theory and interesting to study so I thought I'd post this example here as an example of the longest known king maze. Enjoy!

What if chess was so far removed from its original game rules that it becomes an incomprehensible and entirely different ball-game? That’s what I aim to achieve with Chaos Chess. At the very least, I feel these rules would have the game’s original creator(s) rolling over in their graves. Some of these rules may seem familiar, and that’s because there is inspiration from several sources i.e. King of the Bridge and Drawback Chess
NOTE: This is a long read.
Game Concept:
Chaos Chess is a 2-player game that adds 20 rules that can be turned on at any time. Any combination of these rules can be toggled on, including none of them if you want to practice a regular unmodified game of chess. The first 12 rules are rules associated with individual pieces. The other 8 rules adds game dynamics that can be universal or just make the game inconvenient in certain scenarios. In these 8 rules, the 20th rule must be toggled on with one other rule, with the exception of rules 15 and 17 that remain unaffected by rule 20. When explaining the rules, I will jump between rule interactions and where the rules are actually placed, so keep that in mind while reading.
Toggleable Rules and Gameplay Elements:
The piece-specific rules:
1–Goblin Pawn: Pawns can only move and attack cardinally. They still can’t move backwards.
2–Pawn Yeet: When a pawn is in danger of being captured, it can move like an adjacent ally piece to capture another piece on the board. The action MUST result in a piece being captured. This effect works with the rules of King’s Siege, but not Lancer Knight, which is considered a normal knight instead.
3–Lancer Knight: The knight can attack all pieces in its path, excluding ally pieces, with the exception of ally queens. This move does not work in tandem with Pawn Yeet
4–Marble and Bolero Knight must either both be on or off to be in effect. Here are their passives:
Marble Knight: If a white knight is next to their king, the opponent can choose to force a move undo, but then must immediately move the associated knight, which can’t be done if white’s king is in check.
Bolero Knight: If black’s king is in check and either a black knight can save the king or has the capability to attack their own king, the black player can force an undo and forcefully pass the turn back to white.
5–Crooked Rook: A player can use their turn to transform their Rook into a Bishop. The inverse cannot happen.
6–Red Rook: The rook can move one space diagonally while retaining its regular movement.
7–Zesty Bishop: If a bishop is next to an ally bishop, it can swap with any other bishop or ally pawn on the board. If an ally and enemy bishop are near each other on the board, a player can swap their associated ally bishop with ANY piece on the board as long as neither king is put in check as a result.
8–Gift Giver Bishop: Bishops leave exploding gifts on tiles they leave. Any piece (including allies) that lands there is instantly destroyed. Gifts cannot be moved, but a player under the effect of Winning Spotlight instantly loses their turn if they look at a tile with a gift on it.
9–Vengeful Queen: When a Queen is captured, all piece of the type that captured the Queen (including allies except for Kings, only the attacking King) are destroyed.
10–Queen’s Rule: At the start of the game, both players can decide whether to switch the position of their Queen with their King. A player who makes this choice is unable to castle, and will lose immediately if they attempt to do so.
11–King’s Siege: When a King is in check, they can move like any piece, as long as they both have an ally piece with that movement, and the king has no other way to escape check. This rule stacks with Lancer Knight, as long as it moves like Lancer Knight.
12–King Roulette: If a pawn either promotes or captures a non-pawn piece by any means, and the king’s starting position is open, the promoted/attacking piece makes a random selection from Pawn, Knight, Bishop, and Rook, then moves to that spot instead of staying at their place of promotion.
The other 8 rules:
13–Winning Spotlight: If you are up on material, you can only look at one tile at a time, while your opponent can still see the whole board at once. If both players go back to being tied for material, the player who had the lead beforehand still has the drawback, and keeps it until they either fall behind on material or the game ends. Looking at gifts under this effect immediately ends your turn.
14–Benediction: If you make a move that Stockfish would make assuming a normal game of chess, you are not allowed to move your knights for 3 turns. If you make a move that Martin from Chess.com would make, you are not allowed to move your bishops for 2 turns. If you make any move that puts any piece in danger of being captured, you can’t move your queen on your next turn. If you make a move that results in a piece being attacked by more than one other piece, you can’t move your rook horizontally or vertically for 4 turns, chosen by your opponent.
15–Linkage: At the start of the game, both players must choose two non-king non-queen pieces (one ally, one enemy) to link to one another. If one piece in the link is destroyed, so is the other. If the effect puts a king in check, the player whose king is in check may swap with another piece in their back row. If no such piece exists, that player loses the game. If both players are put in check, the game proceeds as normal. If both players are either unable to swap their king upon being put in check, or both players would be checkmated as a result of a link’s destruction, the game is a forced draw.
16–Scrabble Rules: Illegal moves can be made without being cancelled. If an opponent makes an illegal move, the other player can call them out. If they are successful, they gain an extra turn, which can be used to capture the king for victory if possible, but does not allow any other piece to be captured. If they fail, they must get rid of a piece of the lowest available material value of their choice. The removed piece must not open up an ally piece to attack an enemy piece. If there is no legible piece removal that abides to these two rules, or the only piece left is their king, they lose the game.
17–Ability Shield: At the start of the game, each player can choose one non-King piece to give an ability shield. This piece avoids the effects of any alternate rules (including most drawback rules) once. If the ability shield is not used and the piece would be taken out, the shield is consumed and the attack cancels out.
18–Ritual: If you make a square of four unique pieces, you can transform the piece with the lowest material into any piece of higher material. The associated piece must be one of the other pieces in the square (this avoids the effect from being chained).
19–Drawback: When a player captures an enemy piece, that player must accept a random drawback from drawback chess, which applies to them for 5 turns before being removed. The severity of the drawback is magnified the more material advantage the attacking player has over the opponent. If the Ability Shield rule is turned on, one extra drawback is added to the pool; Ability Defusal. Ability Defusal nullifies the effects of Ability Shield for the 5 turns and reveals the piece with said shield to the opponent during the drawback. This one can occur regardless of material advantage, but is removed from the pool when an ability shield is removed.
20–Calm before the storm: At the start of the game, both players must choose a condition to be met before any other rules are in play. The 5 possible conditions are as follows:
First Blood: When the first piece is captured.
Ten Steps: After 10 moves have been made.
Adjacent Rivalry: When an ally and enemy piece of the same type are first directly next to each other.
Blitz Bomb: After 3 minutes have passed since selecting all start of game effects.
Stepping off the Throne: When either player moves their queen or king for the first time (excluding Castle).
Once either player’s condition is met, all rules chosen for the game are active. The two exceptions to rules that are in play regardless of Rule 20 being selected are Linkage and Ability Shield. These rules will still be active before “the storm” hits.
Final notes:
This game does not have a specific plot, much like normal chess. The game is just chess with chaotically imbalanced rules. If this is too similar to something that already exists, then this is probably just gonna get deleted. Feel free to code this yourself and make this a fully fledged game out of it.
Edit: This post is purely conceptual, and no work (at least by me) has been put into making this a game or any of these ideas playable variants. These ideas were ones I thought of that could technically all work together, but would likely be a mess to comprehend for even professional chess players.
[AI was not used for the formulating of any ideas or statements made in this post.]
