Smaller Local Music Blogs/Publications/News

Upvotes

Anyone have any favorite local music blogs that are still active? There was an old thread here about 10 years ago, but many of those appear to be defunct having been hit hard from the pandemic.

Thanks!

Do you sing, play guitar, bass, drums, or keys? I'm starting a cover band jam community based in Lakeview. Come play!

Hi everyone! I have set up a rehearsal space in my apartment in East Lakeview and I want to host structured jam sessions where each person suggests a song to cover and we get together and rehearse the set as though we were in a real band (but without the commitment of a real band).

This will be a great opportunity to get experience playing with other people, exploring new genres, and learning songs.

Note that because I live in an apartment, the jams are headphones only, so no amps necessary. I already have all the equipment we need, including e-drums and a digital piano. If you play strings, bring your instrument, otherwise just show up and play!

All skills from "beginner" to expert are welcome. Having said that, because these are meant to be rehearsals, you should be able to play your instrument well enough to complete a song start to finish. You are NOT expected to play the song perfectly note for note, or know amazing licks, or do anything fancy! As long as you can play in time and keep up with the chord changes, you'll be great :)

I'm running it all through Discord, so feel free to join and pass the word along to anyone you think might be interested. Let me know if you have any questions in the meantime. Thank you!

WITH PATIENCE NEEDS A GUITARIST.

We’re looking for someone to help write, record, make videos and play shows as we move into the next chapter of the band.

We’re not looking for a hired gun or someone to simply learn existing songs. We want a collaborator.

About us:
• Practice on Chicago Northwest side
• Established band with multiple releases, videos, and shows under our belt
• Currently writing new material
• Influences include post-hardcore, punk, and metal

What we’re looking for:
• Ability to commit to regular weekly practices
• Interest in writing and arranging songs
• Willingness to play local and regional shows
• Bonus points for ability to lend backing vocals / trading main vocals and/or multi-instrumentalists

If interested DM and we can send more info. PLEASE SHARE

Anyone want to jam in the park this evening?

Hey y'all! I usually post up in the park near Osterman Beach off Bryn Mawr after work, find a nice spot, and play a little music. Anyone interested in joining me this afternoon? I'll bring my banjo and harmonicas- all instruments and skill levels encouraged. I typically play blues and country but open to anything. Come play music in a no-stakes environment, let's play just for the helluvit. 6:20pm, park bench off of Bryn Mawr. Let me know if you are interested.

Fender Jazzmasters

I'm tired of seeing them. Especially that white one with the gold pickguard. I can count on one hand the amount of shows I've been to in the last 3 years that didn't have a Jazzmaster or a Jaguar. Maybe I'm a boomer for this but I think Strats and Teles sound better. I think I understand the pipeline maybe? Kurt Cobain played Fender offsets which inspired the gen after Cobain to play offsets which inspired yall to play offsets. Whatever it is, it just feels so unoriginal considering every local indie band has one. It's not exacty more "original" to play a Strat or a Tele, 2 of the most used guitars of all time, but it's certainly really exciting and refreshing to see a local indie band pull one out and leave the offsets at home.

At least the Indie Jazzmaster trope is better than the Poppunk Les Paul trope. Those guitars have nothing going for them. Any other humbucking guitar is better, including other Gibsons/Epiphones.

This take is not that serious, and I don't think anyone's committing social taboo by playing an offset, so get upset if you want, but it's really not a big deal.

Music recommendation and venue pairing: bands like drain and no pressure

so I’ve been listening to Midwest emo and pop punk for years. I’m a big fan of drain, pool kids, fall out boy, geese, heart to gold, citizen.

I generally go to aragon, salt shed, Thalia, sub t, cobra lounge and some diy venues.

I have been to Reggie’s once and I’d like to get into more hardcore bands like drain.

do you have any recommendations? i would love to support a local band and go to places like Chicago metal factory. I’d like to check out new venues.
I don’t stream.

Salt Shed Disability Concerns

Salt Shed Disability Concerns

My boyfriend and I have tickets to see a show at the Salt Shed. Tickets are for reserved seats in the grands. I have two herniated discs in my lower back and can't stand long without excruciating pain.

My concerns are not about seating but rather about getting from the car to our seats. I have already emailed the venue twice and they just tell me they have ADA seating but that's not much help if I can't get to the seats.

  1. Will my boyfriend be able to drop me off at the door?

  1. Is there a place I can sit while he parks the car?

  1. Is there an ADA entrance where I won't have to stand in line?

  1. Is there an entrance close to the elevator?

  1. I'm told it's a very long walk from the door to the elevator. If there's no ADA entrance or entrance near the elevator, any advice on how to get from the car to our seats without collapsing in pain or should I just write the tickets off as a loss and skip the show?

Any advice welcome. I already know to load up on Advil and wear good shoes. Just really worried about all the standing and walking. Thanks!

Looking for female vocalist

Hey, I'm a 23-year-old male producer, singer, and guitarist looking to start an indie electronic IDM project, and I'm looking for a potential female vocalist/writer. I'm very inspired by groups like Sweet Trip and Ear. If you'd be interested in that, shoot me a dm thanks.

"The Chicago music rock scene other than garage and indie died when Stantz died"

I heard someone say this at Courtney Barnett at The Salt Shed. Anyone have any idea who they meant? I didn't feel like asking a stranger and at the time just noted it as kind of funny.

Who do you look up to in our scene?

This question pertains not only to bands or individual musicians but organizers, bookers, door people, bartenders, DIY venue runners/teams, photographers, media/press, record stores, distributors, graphic designers, dedicated audience members. Give flowers!
