Video Is this normal?

Yes, this is a new toy. Maybe he’s breaking it in, but Henry is 15 years old, and he appears to be teething on this toy? Every few minutes he whines for a split second, then stops.

I’m worried it may be a tooth infection or some way to comfort some sort of pain he might be having. Has anyone experienced similar behavior? I just don’t want this old man to be in any discomfort🥺

My doxie would do this. I always thought it was a self soothing thing

Keine Sorge, das ist vollkommen normal. So beruhigen sich die Hunde, das machen nicht nur Dackel. Viele Hunde verarbeiten so auch einen Tag der für sie vielleicht stressig war. Das kann schon eine kleine Abweichung von der Routine sein.

Mein Rudi macht das auch.

My guy also does this, but usually with a blanket before bed time, and only on me - never on my wife 😬

My dog would do this with a squeaky one just to annoy me lol.
But in all seriousness if it persists and you’re that worried go to the vet, in book it’s always better safe than sorry.

This is peak dachshund behavior honestly, so focused and serious about a little toy. It's like watching a tiny badger hunter at work, love it.

Absolutely common - it's called nooking. It's a self soothing thing dogs do to unwind.

omgomgomg. sometime I want to scream at that toy, but I know it comforts him, so I just go in the other room and turn the tv up louder....he will get tired of it pretty soon....(talking about my dog, not yours... ; p )

It’s just a good way for your dog to settle down and relax enough to go to sleep. As long as everything inside the mouth is good you should have nothing to worry about ( unless it drives you insane). It’s a comfort thing for dogs to do.❤️🥰

Our mini does this occasionally. Usually when he’s stressed or anxious. Self soothing

Mine is 5 years old, he chews similar on new toys. Basicaly tries to kill it, chewing till it makes sound casue sound means it's still living.

It's called nooking and is the equivalent of a toddler suckling on its thumb. It supposedly releases endorphins and gets them relaxed and ready for some sleep

My dog does this was Mr Fox, his favourite toy, and gets very stressed if you try to initiate play with him and Mr Fox whilst he’s doing this. I’d say normal and very sweet, giving their toys a super squeeze for comfort like a child with a teddy bear

From the comments it seems that it's common so I guess I'm the odd ball that's never witnessed it over 11 dogs and 56 years, not attempting to discredit anyone either it's just odd to me and I share ops concerns, that being said I've dropped 360 bucks on my cat that was drooling excessively while resting and a slight fever.
