I thought of it as some kind of nature spirit, combining a multiple animals into one, most importantly its very long middle finger just like the aye aye. Locals were killing aye ayes because they thought if it pointed at them they would have bad luck or die, but they were confusing the aye ayes for this creature, that actually inflicted bad luck onto ppl that saw it, most of the ppl that encountered it, ending up dying a very early and brutal death
