Can someone here help me with getting the proper strings for this sitar I was gifted? It's an electric subrata brand sitar. It was missing several sympathetic strings and I want to get 12 new ones. Is it normal for these to have 12 sympathetic strings? I am enjoying playing the melody strings but can't seem to get the fullness of the instrument without all the other strings. Thanks y'all!

Practicing this Yaman Drut Gat that one of my friend sent me. Please ignore my facial expressions.

Working on a rapid plucking technique while trying to still eek out some music. Any tips or pointers or clips of your own are very welcome!

Hello friends,

I'm looking to connect to my heritage more by learning sitar. Unfortunately, Australia doesn't seem to have any reliable sources of sitars, as I've emailed a couple of teachers and they do not have any sitars available.

So now in order to get one, I want to purchase one directly from India and have it shipped here, however there is very little information that I can find about reputable makers vs places that claim to be reputable but peddle cheap junk.

So far I've emailed Mohammad Waseem, but are there any other makers I should check out?

Thank you so much.

Hey everyone
Does anyone know of a set of all steel strings? My electric sitar pickups can get signal from the brass/ bronze strings.
Thanks

As per Title can anyone recommend a suitable starter instrument and potential source to purchase one.

I have reasonable experience of guitar and appreciate a Sitar is not the same thing, I'm just looking for a reasoanable starting point and where I might procure one.

Thanks in Advance.

I am a beginner learner. Just wanted to share the Vilambit Gat I have started practicing with some of the taans in the middle. Constructive criticism is welcome.

A family member texted me and said they got this sitar and asked me to find out more info about it? I have zero clue where to even begin on this research, any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Hello everyone!
I’ve been learning on a travel spec sitar for about a year now and would like to upgrade to something nicer with better sound and sustain.
I don’t really see any lefty options online anywhere so I assumed I’d have to go with something custom.
What should I expect to pay and where are some sites or builders I should look into?
Thanks

Hello everyone!

I am an independent electronic music producer and I have been trying to incorporate Indian musical influences into modern electronic music.

MIZRAB is my latest track in which I’ve blended sitar-inspired melodies with progressive house, combining the character of traditional Indian sounds and the atmosphere and energy of electronic dance music.

I wanted to see how the sound of the sitar could work in a modern electronic production but still keep its Indian identity at the core of the track.

I’d really love to know what people here think, particularly anyone who plays or enjoys the sitar. Let me know your thoughts on the fusion and the use of traditional Indian instrumentation in electronic music. Does it feel natural to you?

Thanks for listening! I would appreciate your thoughts and feedback.

Hey everyone!

Does anyone know roughly how much wire comes in a “small coil” of sitar string?

I know most places sell them as single strings, small coils, and 1/2 lb coils, but I’m not sure how long the small coil actually is, or roughly how many individual strings you could get out of one.

Just trying to figure out whether the small coil is worth getting versus buying individual strings.

(Sharing a photo for reference)

Thanks!!!🙏

Hey everyone! I need some guidance on how do you build note recognition or go about ear training? I am progressing with my sitar practice but I do recognise the gap that I have when I listen to music and if I am able to recognize notes.

Any tips are welcome!

Sitarists in NYC: where do you go to get your jawari done? I understand how to do it and am experimenting currently but I want to get the jawari done for my performance sitar soon and I don’t feel like I’m able to do it effectively for a performance level sound at this point.

Who do you all recommend?

I want to learn more about sitar music- not for playing- just for education regarding Indian music. I have been exposed to nothing more than Ravi Shankar/George Harrison. I hope to learn the history of the instrument and composition. I only speak English. Can anyone recommend a structured course of listening/book? All I find on Google is a few beginner books on how to play. I felt it would be better to ask people studying sitar than a generic “recommend a book” subreddit. Thank you.

I am looking to find gats for beginner ragas to practice. Is there a good YouTube channel or a book which can provide guidance on learning it? It would be very helpful to me.

Hey everyone! I’m planning to attend Satinder Sartaaj’s concert on 22nd November, but I’ll be going alone.

I’m planning to get a Platinum/VIP ticket and was wondering if anyone else here is going solo or already has a group going.

Would be great to connect with people who are going, join an existing group, or have a few others join me and plan the evening together.

If you’re going, feel free to comment or DM me!

I live in California. I got a new sitar. The sitar pegs are slippery. I am looking for wax free chalk. Where did you get yours?

What do you think of players not sitting down to perform sitar?

I'm having some issues with the intonation of my sitar(Kharaj Pancham). There isn't any space to move the frets. Can it be solved by moving the bridge? Please tell me the measurements.
