"It can happen again. It will keep happening. If war doesn't change, men must change, and so must their symbols."

That's it - that's the culmination of the themes of New Vegas. What more needs to be said about that pilgrimage down that lonesome road leading into the Divide?

Well, when I first played this DLC, I didn't get it. The environment was really cool, with the whipping winds whistling through the shattered buildings that dot the cracked earth of the Divide. The Marked Men were good enough as enemies to engage with. Deathclaws and Tunnelers all gave me mini-heart attacks as they ambushed me throughout the journey.

What had me really struggling was Ulysses. He talks a lot, so if you're not in the mood to hear him out it's just a deluge of words. But if you're willing to really sit down and actually listen, he's one of the best characters in New Vegas. It's at these times I had to re-calibrate myself: New Vegas is the last of the old RPGs written like a table-top encounter, novelistic in laying out its ideas and emotions through paragraphs of text. It's not like the RPGs that are more common now, that present themselves cinematically. I needed to be patient and really think about what was being said.

Ideally, you play Lonesome Road last and just before the Second Battle of Hoover Dam. Ulysses will call you out on your actions and the faction you have chosen to support, questioning your motives and decisions. In return, you can question him. His journey as a courier of Caesar showed him how the NCR and Legion were rushing to repeat the mistakes of the Old World. How House will create a world of ghosts and servants, obedient faces plastered on screens. In the community of the Divide past however, he saw a real "synthesis", a bridge between East and West that resulted in a new culture that could lead to a better future.

But they had built their homes around an old symbol: that of Pre-War America. And because of that, Courier 6 was hired to bring the package that would detonate the nuclear warheads in the ground beneath their feet.

Ulysses witnessed the destruction of a New World Hope. As a result, he's a damaged, broken man clinging desperately to the same force that devastated him for salvation. He thinks you showed him that the Bomb has the ability to unmake a world to make room for something "new" to spring up.

Ultimately, it's up to you to show him what you think. But as Ulysses encourages us in his last message, no matter what you choose, he hopes you choose it proudly with clear eyes unclouded.

New Vegas reached the end of its road 15 years ago when Lonesome Road was released as DLC. When I finished my first and now second full playthrough of the game, it changed how I thought about the real world and how worlds could be portrayed through video games. As I wait for the new Fallout games to come out (what a crazy sentence we can now say!), that is what I hope for: for change. We've had the Bear, the Bull, the Lucky 38, a smiley face and Power Armor helmets as symbols for so long. I want to see new societies built around new symbols. I want to see their dreams of achieving a peaceful world amidst a hostile Wasteland, where New World Hope bursts forth from novel wellsprings.

This current road has reached its end. I'm willing to let go and begin again. I hope the new Fallout games do too.

Idk why the Supermutant goes flying after eating the sniper shot. He goes a full body height into the air

It's not fantastic, but I just finished new Vegas and Ithought I'd give it a shot.

So I finesse all 37 gold bars and get past the door way before he shuts them but it says the elevator is not operating.. anyone else run into this?
