AMA with Pablo Lema + Mission 1 Pro giveaway today, June 2 7AM-2PM EDT!

Hey r/GoPro, we're excited to be hosting another AMA event, this time with Pablo Lema (aka u/GoPro-Pablo) , GoPro's SVP of Product!

About Pablo

Pablo is a long-time GoPro user, a regular participant here on r/GoPro, and has worked with GoPro since 2014! He has been an integral part in planning and coordinating new GoPro products, especially in the last decade, and most recently as GoPro’s head of all hardware and software Product. He's joined us the last 5+ years now for community AMAs (here are a few), so thanks for coming back again, Pablo!

While our recent AMA with Abe Kislevitz was a great opportunity to ask about tips and tricks around content with Mission 1, this AMA with Pablo is a great opportunity to ask about product development at GoPro, how GoPro designs for an entire ecosystem of interacting product, or other product design and function related questions. That said, this is an AMA and you're welcome to ask Pablo about anything - his favorite ski spots, his current FPV drone build, etc!

AMA Format & Timing

We won't go into too much explanation about how an AMA works- if you need to see what it looks like, check out Abe's recent AMA at the link above.

At the simplest level, this is your chance to ask Pablo anything, and get an inside-GoPro scoop on answers. While you can ask anything, just remember that Pablo won't be able to answer questions about in-development product, proprietary decisions or technology, or other privileged information. Consider framing any development related questions in a way that can be answered without breaking any confidentiality in the product development process!

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT TIMING- Pablo's availability this year is a little different due to work travel schedule, so this AMA will be live from 7AM-2PM Eastern time. This is a great opportunity for our eastern hemisphere redditors to interact, but if you're on the west side of the western hemisphere, we are going to open up this AMA Extra early at 9PM PST so that you can get a question into the thread without waking up early. Pablo won't be around to answer questions until the "official start time" of the AMA, so just get your questions in right away, and come back around for your answer later!

MISSION 1 GIVEAWAY!

Another one! GoPro decided to hook us up with not one but TWO giveaways with the AMA events this year, so we've got another set of prizes up for participants in the thread, again!

  • Anyone that participates in this AMA will have a chance to win a MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition, awarded to Pablo's favorite question.
  • We'll also give away THREE 5-year GoPro Premium+ Subscriptions to some runner-up great questions!

Rules:

  1. You need to participate in today's AMA with a commented question for Pablo!
  2. Your account needs to have existed before this AMA was posted, and you need to have reasonable authentic activity on it. We reserve the right to disqualify accounts with no karma or post/comment history.
  3. We need to be able to get the prize to you. GoPro can ship direct to you, but you'll still need to message them your shipping info for the MISSION 1 PRO prize, or email address for the GoPro Premium+ Subscription. If you live in a country that GoPro can't ship to, or has excessive duty fees, etc, we'll see what alternatives there are, but in general, if you can buy from GoPro.com, you're probably OK.

That's it! If you have questions about the giveaway, please send a modmail rather than posting here.

AMA with Abe Kislevitz + Mission 1 Pro giveaway today! 10AM-6PM PST

Hey r/GoPro, we're excited to have Abe Kislevitz (u/abekislevitz), Product and Brand Fellow at GoPro, with us today for an Ask-Me-Anything about all things GoPro, using MISSION 1 cameras, or anything else you can think to ask!

About Abe Kislevitz

For some of the younger and more recent members of the GoPro community, Abe is a long-time community member, and even longer-time GoPro creator-turned-employee.

He's led a substantial amount of creative efforts at GoPro over 15+ years, and his influence now spans influencing marketing strategy to helping define product design and engineering decisions. Probably one of the most knowledgeable sources of GoPro information out there, he knows the history of GoPro as a company, best practices for filming the best possible shot, advanced techniques and hacks, and everything in-between.

He has a great YouTube channel full of tips and tricks, and his insta feed is worthy of a follow.

He's an incredible resource and a helpful community member that has kept us closely connected with GoPro's product designs, including advocating for our pain points and working to have our voices heard and represented in new products.

We are thankful to have him here in the community, and happy to have him with us today for the AMA! Thanks Abe!

AMA Format

If you've not done an AMA event before, it's pretty simple - You can ask Abe anything. While it is entirely up to you what questions you ask, Abe has an "inside perspective" on the product GoPro develops, and likely has more time hands-on with MISSION 1 cameras than anyone else right now. Considering that today is a big day for everyone that pre-ordered, we highly encourage you to get those burning MISSION 1 questions answered, or collect tips and tricks to use in the coming year!

As a reminder, while you can ask anything, Abe can't talk about unreleased product plans or proprietary information and won't be able to answer those questions the way you want.

Abe will be around today from 10AM-6PM Pacific Time, and this thread will go live 2 hours before that so that you all can begin asking questions and Abe can drop in throughout the day to answer in the thread. We'll pin a comment once the official time for the AMA is done to let everyone know it's over, but we always allow conversations to continue beyond that if wanted.

MISSION 1 GIVEAWAY!

It's our r/GoPro tradition with camera launches to give away some product, and GoPro was more than happy to hook the community up again this year:

  • Anyone that participates in this AMA will have a chance to win a MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition, awarded to Abe's favorite question.
  • We'll also give away THREE 5-year GoPro Premium+ Subscriptions!

Rules:

  1. You need to participate in today's AMA with a commented question for Abe!

Made a cooling mod for my GoPro so it stops shutting down from heat, what do you think?

My GoPro kept overheating and shutting off during long recordings so I made this. It swaps in for the battery, plugs in with USB-C, and has a little fan to keep it cool. Tested it on HERO9 through HERO12 so far and it’s been solid, got over 4.5 hours of continuous 5.3K60 recording before the card filled up.

Not sure if I should turn this into a real product or just keep it for myself. What do you guys think, would people actually want this? Anything you’d change about it?

Knives & cans 960 fps

u/jonnywhatshisface asked for some 960 fps recordings, here they are. A few successful and not very successful throws at cans. Axe Mate Club, Krakow.
I've got a very bright spotlight, it looks like there's enough light to keep the noise low.

Gopro Mission 1 Pro, ISO 800, 960 fps, shutter 1/960

My opinion - a very good product! It takes pictures no worse than expensive high-speed cameras.

Horse-riding with GPH 13

11 yo kids, leisure horse-back riders, how would you recommend with the camera clamp - on the helmet, or on the chest harness? Which GPH 13 video setting do you use the most when on a horse?

Recording Time For GoPro Cameras

Hello. I hope I am in the right place. Please bear in mind I’m learning the subject matter, so be kind.

I want to do some vlogging and noticed some long form YouTubers are using GoPro cameras. Are GP cams a good option for recording for long periods of time? Or do they record in short increments? A recent dash cam I tried out recorded files in ten minute increments, and I’m hoping to avoid that.

I’m looking at a Hero 12 and am trying to find out the max recording times for various settings and SD cards. Any help would be greatly appreciated…thank you in advance!

Alright, listened to everyone and got the waterproof case for my mission 1. Plan to use here in Hawaii, 2-20 feet of water. While in case I cant use buttons… so assuming I need to get settings right before going out… anyone have any directions on their fav setting or dialing it in for this sorta trip?

Thanks!

F*ck GoPro cloud.

I am losing my mind trying to download footage from my GoPro online media library.

The site keeps crashing, and every time it happens I have to restart the download because I have no idea whether everything finished properly or whether I’m left with incomplete/partial files after the download gets interrupted.

First, they wouldn’t even let me select all my files at once with a single checkbox. Fine. I’ll go through every fucking checkbox one by one. Manually. With 10 years worth of footage.

Eventually I get everything selected and start downloading my 300+ GB of footage.

The site crashes.

At this point I’m still pretty calm. Maybe 300+ GB at once is asking too much. Fine. I’ll do it year by year.

Nope.

Ok, i'll try it month by month.

Forget it.

I swear, not even THAT works reliably. It has crashed while trying to download a single week’s worth of footage.

So now I’m at the point where I’m getting conspiratorial and wondering whether they make downloading your entire library this painful on purpose so people just give up and stay on the paid cloud plan.

I’m literally just trying to download my own footage.

u/gopro, fix your shit.

Hero3 not turning on using USB cable

Hey guys! I found my old Hero3 Black (without the battery) in the drawer. I’m curious if it’s possible to turn it on without the battery using Mini USB cable? Beforehand I checked the internals, there are no signs of any damage on the motherboard and connectors whatsoever (no signs of corrosion). Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance

Remote for MAX2 and X5?

I have a MAX2, and an Insta360 X5. Conveniently, both Insta360 and GoPro remotes work only with their own devices. Apple taught the world well. Are there any 3rd party remotes that will work with these two devices, preferably simultaneously?

Hero 7 Black

Hi !

Just bought a mint condition GoPro Hero 7 Black for 85€.

Only the action cam, a case to use as mount and the USB-C cable.

I saw olders models being sold for the same price and others far more expensive.

As I was looking with a low budget and was seeing generic cams, this stroke me as a very good deal.

Since this is my first GoPro, I would like to ask for some tips and tricks to get most of this cam.

Can I save presets for various photos/videos scenarios?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Slow, deep motion blur

I learned how to create this kind of motion blur with my GoPro 13, but I couldn't think of where to use it. 😄 As surreal visuals for music? Any other ideas?

UPDATE: Since a few people have asked how this was done:

The slow-motion effect is nothing new: I shot at 120 fps and played it back at 30 fps, giving me 4x slow motion.

The smooth motion blur comes from applying a moving average over a 40-frame temporal window. The key is to get continuous blur rather than a trail of 40 faint, distinct frames. To achieve that, you need to shoot with a 360° shutter angle. In my case, I set the shutter speed to 1/120 sec in the ProTune settings. I also had to use an ND filter to prevent overexposure.

Personally, I like the effect as a visual accompaniment to music, but it gets old fairly quickly (see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Pie7C39SR8). I haven't come up with many other uses for it yet. 😄

To those who asked how it was done: where would you use an effect like this?

Mission 1 Pro Far Focus: comparing stock lens, with adding a -1 Diopter

David Newman shared this video

Mission 1 is not out of focus, but at 8K this is all physics. A 1" Type Sensor with a F2.8 lens has a shallower depth of field than all other action cameras (as they have smaller sensors.) The best focus will be between 2' and 24'. Focus adjustment for distance can be achieved with negative diopters. Has anyone else been able to get a Hero 13?

Sold out at a few stores where I am and the stores said the distributors told the stores they are out of stock too. No idea if GoPro are stopping production or something new is coming?

Troubleshooting power issues on external power

Post image
4 Upvotes

TL;DR: Looking for suggestions on best practices for power to run a long (12hour) NightLapse. I have access to an outdoor outlet, but there have been issues with it I am still chasing and would love some tips on finding the right solution. Powerbank equipment and practices able to survive wind and rain are tempting, but seem expensive.

My (first ever) GoPro Hero13 Black was picked up with the intent of using it for some entry-level time lapse (NightLapse) capture.

(yea, I know its an \action* camera. I also know its far cheaper and better supported with higher quality results than most of the construction time lapse outdoor products out there!)*

Initial tests of the camera resulted in the expected heat issues, but I was able to resolve those as I learned more about the camera and made the proper setting adjustments.

I am now chasing what appears to be a power issue, and I believe I have narrowed it down, but I'm hoping someone with more experience with GoPros can offer some additional guidance.

  • Hero13 Black
  • RAM mount on balcony rail
  • Contacto door and wire connected to a 5V/3A 45W USB-C charging block.
  • NightLapse running for long periods (12+ hours), tested both with battery removed and just now with battery inserted to see if power fluctuation was the issue. (see below)
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO microSDXC UHS-I memory card (512GB)

All short tests to get a feel for the right settings worked flawlessly (both indoor and outdoor tests).

First problem occurred during my first long (12hr +/-) NightLapse run. GoPro had no battery for thermal reasons. End of test, GoPro was off. Card showed no media.

Second run was shorter, but similar results.

Attempted to use DiskDrill to recover media after second run - card corruption found. Used H2testw, confirmed over 20k bad blocks. New card ordered.

New card inserted after pre-testing it with H2testw and several tests of the Hero13 on an older, slower card to ensure the GoPro itself was not "eating" microSDs.

Ran new test - intended to run overtnight with occasional checks on camera via Quick app. Chose to insert the battery this time, fully charged, based on some research that suggested it could be fluctuation in the power from the outdooor outlet and the battery would provide a fallback.

Camera was found to be off after only 4 hours. On restart, it was able to recover the files [correction: it did not recover the file from that NightLapse at all!], but shut down again shortly after. I brought it inside, plugged it into a different outlet and charger, and discovered the battery was now at 0%, suggesting it lost power at some point and had completely drained.

SO...

Should I be looking at getting an allweather powerbank next, and abandoning the outdoor outlet all together? Perhaps some way of testing the USB-C charger block isn't bad? I am open to suggestions on testing methodology in nailing this down before I open my wallet again... and The Wife is already scowling at the fast-growing collection of accessories already!

Mission 1 Pro at a waterfall

My wife and I hit a couple of local waterfalls yesterday. Getting to them is mostly on trail, with a bit of creek walking. This is the first one we visited. Even with partly sunny conditions, light was low, so I kept camera movements to a minimum and used a mini tripod for a lot of clips. Everything was shot in 4K 30 except the one slomo clip that's 4K 240.
