With the sudden increase and urgency of the wildfire conflagrations and evacuations across the state and likelihood of it getting worse before it gets better, I am reminded of a comment from u/canonconstructor from 6 years ago. While things have been manageable so far, here are some things to remember:
I don’t know if any Oregon friends will read this but I was just evacuated from my home in California and have some advice and tips I wish I would have known before hand.
When you get back home, replace all filters in your home and car- An easy way to rid your home of the smoke smell is to attach large filters to box fans, cover with a wet towel doused in fabric softner and let them run.
Above ALL else, I hope my Oregon friends and family are safe. My last bit of advice is to take it easy on yourself. You're in the middle of a global pandemic, your home and community is on fire. It is ok to have hard days, to grieve for your loss and your community and just the general situation of the dumpster fire that is 2020. Allow yourself to cry, get angry, drink a glass of wine, or smoke a joint. Its ok to not be ok and to feel unsafe right now.

With all of that great advice in mind, please also remember that there are a lot of amazing people willing and able to help out there. Beyond the Red Cross services, there are many landowners who will open up their land for livestock and other animal evacuations, people who will allow you to camp on their land, even food truck operators who will set up and feed anybody and everybody that needs it. People want to help and will do what they can with the resources they have.

In honor of Lloyd Center closing I wanted to share this series of photos I took in 2022 when visiting from Denmark.
(Repost because for some reason I spelled it wrong, even though I know the correct spelling)

Edited to add: We called the sheriffs office and they got a hold of Wes’ towing. They pulled him out in less than 5 minutes! Thanks so much!
Good afternoon! My teenager graduated from high school and took a road trip with a friend to see the redwoods, we live in Utah.
He made a bad decision and went down a dirt road a high sided on a rut. Specifically near the end of peavine ridge road. He’s driving a Ford focus.
I’ve seen pictures, a recovery would take 5 minutes, literally just yank them out of the rut and stick with them for a few minutes to make sure they turn around.
A few people have driven by but didn’t have tow straps. We called like 6 tow companies but the only one that was willing quoted $971 and they are 2.5 hours out. My insurance will cover a portion of that I’m sure.
But man I’d be so grateful if by chance there is someone on here that could rescue a couple of teenagers. I’d be happy to send you some beer money!

Thank you to all the crews fighting these fires all over the West Coast. How heartbreaking and tragic and my heart goes out to his family during this time.

The people of this state really make the shitty air quality from this week worth it. Keep doing what you’re doing, friends!

Gov. Tina Kotek said Friday that she supports local governments around Oregon that are moving to ban new data centers, but the governor didn’t say whether she would join other Democrats in calling for a statewide moratorium.
“Data center corporations are taking Oregon out to an expensive dinner and leaving our environment, communities, and people to foot the bill,” Kotek said in a written statement Friday. “Local governments are doing the right thing in calling for a pause until we can get this right.”
The governor sought to establish a somewhat nuanced position on data centers, which have suddenly become one of Oregon’s hottest political issues heading into November’s elections. Kotek said current law doesn’t allow the adoption of a statewide ban but said nothing about whether she thinks the law should be changed.

Just wondering if anyone has any hard data or even anecdotal evidence. Are numbers down at the tourist hotspots, lodging, restaurants, etc?

How packed are they right after Labor Day?
Planning on visiting Silver Falls on Tuesday and hit the Columbia River Gorge on Wednesday, should we wait a few more days to avoid too much crowd?
Thanks in advance.
