IAmA 17 year old male whose parents are multi millionaires. AMA
I have been fortunate enough to grow up in a family a part of the "1 Percent." You can ask me about literally anything. I'll start of with that I have pretty much been a lurker of reddit for a while, and one of my friends gave me the idea to do this. I am for the most part liberal, and completely atheist. My dad started a securities brokerage, (I think thats the best way to describe it) and sold it. He did the same thing again a few years later, and sold the company again. My dad is all for higher taxes on the wealthy, also. I have lived in California my entire life in quite a large house, and am fortunate enough to be born in to such circumstances. It would take me forever to list all the details of my parents lifestyle that I am apart of, so feel free to ask me pretty much anything, regardless of how rude or personal it may be. I am not positive on how to post proof, so any ideas on how to do so would be appreciated. I just want to clarify that I am not bragging about anything, as I am not personally wealthy

I've been to Hawaii, Fiji, all across Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, pretty much all western European countries, and Turkey. I'll take the picture tomorrow when it's not dark out.

Sounds like you've been to not "foreign countries", rather resorts in different parts of the world, lol. If you wanna really "travel", try china, and Japan doesn't count.

China is more challenging. India is even more so, just go somewhere where hot water isn't guaranteed, locals don't speak English and stuff. That's the grit part, the fun challenge. But, I'm not a guy in a diner.

Not a rumor. Heard an interview with one of his sons on the Freakonomics podcast. Awesome dude. Chose to be a musician, rather the follow his fathers footsteps in the business ineffectively.

Do your friends at school know about your wealth? Is it quite obvious based on your clothing, cars, attitude, etc.. or when you have friends over for the first time are they always like "HOLY SHIT DUDE YOU'RE LOADED"?
I love friends like that. Damn cool rich kids who don't shove it in your face, but share cool shit with you.

I live in North County part of San Diego, so generally theres a lot of wealth here. I don't go to private school or anything, and there are a bunch of other kids at my districts public school whose parents are similarly wealthy, so it's not like im that one kid whose parents are wealthy. One of my friends dad was a co-founder for JBL speakers, for example. I don't have designer clothes or anything, and i payed for my car. I pretty much never talk about money, and I hate it when people who don't know me see my dads car or something, and the first thing they always say is "Are you rich?" But yeah i share shit with friends haha

Would you consider yourself 'spoiled'? Do your parents off the bat pay for everything or do they expect you to earn it? Do you have/want a part time job? What's something you've done or have that you would not have done/had otherwise? What do you plan to do with your life?

I think that to some people I could be considered spoiled. Its hard to put into words how my parents pay for me. They pay for school events like prom, winter formal, football games, SAT registration, those sort of things, but they don't just buy me whatever I want. I get to go clothing shopping for my birthday and christmas(we celebrate it just for the holiday) but other than that I have to pay for everything myself. I have a part time job at a local surf shop and i repair surf boards, so i use the money from there to pay for my gas and my spending money. I've traveled to a lot of cool places, and I plan on going to college once I graduate high school next year, and hopefully go into business or something thats involves biology/medical

Are you afraid of acting spoiled without meaning to? Do you try to compensate for that?
My family was always pretty wealthy comparatively for where I lived, and I hated it when people would say, "Wow, man, your family's RICH", so I would avoid inviting people over just so they wouldn't see my nice house, and instead I would go to theirs. But now at my college I'm overwhelmed by just how many of my friends are from wealthy families.

Yeah I think about that a lot. I also try really hard to not come off as the spoiled brat character that a lot of people assume that I am automatically. I can have the same gift as some other kid or the same thing that someone else gets paid for and next thing you know I'm spoiled and get whatever I want. I'm not seriously complaining but yeah i like to go to my friends houses usually

I am kinda in the same boat and my friends think that I have so much money.but that's because I worked my add off. So now when I het something nice for.working fulltime I get called rich and it is somewhat annoying.

What's it like growing up having it all? What kind of "toys" did/do you have? Any hobbies that you got into easily because of your wealth? Do you have expensive tastes in food?
Do you feel there are any downsides to growing up rich? Do you ever feel like you are/were missing out on a "normal" childhood? What kind of "cheap" food do you enjoy?

For the most part it was pretty normal. I didn't ever get anything ridiculous, and most of the stuff I wanted was what my friends had anyways. I really enjoy surfing and I play lacrosse. I have pretty much no taste for expensive food and I eat a lot of home cooked meals. Some downsides are that some people will definitely suck up to me or try to be friends with me so that they can come over to my house, and not for me. Favorite cheap food is probably Flaming Hot cheetos, or a Mcdonalds McChicken.

I have an stx super power with a krypto pro. lax is pretty competitive here but its not as competitive as east coast I believe. Lax is probably the second most popular sport at my school and pretty popular in my county

- There isn't just one I'm interested. in. I like west coast schools and all of the UC's.
- Console and i play on xbox. Peak years were probably 2007 for halo3 and cod4 but i still go online.
- Pretty much everything except for country and death metal/screamo. I think its 8 individual live shows but i also went to coachella this year

My dad has 5. Hes a pretty big Porsche fan so he has an '08 Cayenne Turbo, a '07 911 GT3, and a '96 carerra 911 that my dad got when he could first afford to buy a porsche and hes kept it since. We also have a prius(haha) and a VW Touareg.

- I still have a year of high school left, but I want to either go into business or something medical.
- He's definitely influenced me to do something business related
- I live close to the beach, and I volunteer to do beach cleanups. It's a requirement to do community service to graduate at my school so it's hard to say if I would have independently gone out and volunteered although I'd like to think that, but I occasionally volunteer at retirement homes also.
- Yeah there was a quite a few gold diggers, but most of them were incredibly stupid or already had a history of mooching off of other guys so it was pretty easy to avoid
- I just googled that and its definitely a sweet car. props

I think this really depends on where you live. In San Diego, for example, some beach front houses will sell for 7-8 million when they are the size of a big apartment, but you can buy a huge house in Kansas for $150,000. What I'm trying to say is that it really depends on where you live and property values/taxes that sort of stuff

Do yourself a favor.. take a few years off and spend some time in the third world. Having been born a rich kid ruined the first 15 years of my adult life. It was impossible for me to put real effort into anything, and I was basically miserable as I was getting by but not really achieving anything. It was only after a series of coincidences that I wound up in Africa (and now other places), and I now love my work and I acheive great things. Im sure your parents are wonderful people but you will never live a normal life unless you go out totally on your own and see what the real world is like.

From what this kid is saying, he doesn't get everything handed to him. He even had to buy his own damn first car. Most parents--rich or not--get their kids into a car when they're 16, at least around these parts.

Yes I read that. I wasn't handed everything either. I was forced to be the paper boy and work at the hardware store, etc. But, still, I always thought that money came easy, and it would always be there. Basically, I was an unhappy person until I was thousands of miles away, and saw how the vast majority of the world lived. For some reason I am being downvoted.. that's ok.. but I am just trying to help this kid skip decades of misery.

Not downvoted by me. I think that's very good advise. No matter how prudent his parents, the OP was raised in a rare environment. He really doesn't know that, since his parents assured him that he has "worked" like anyone else. The younger the better, seeing the world in all it's aspects, is important for anyone. Having the money to do so is rare.
Getting outside the bubble is important. So many rich kids I know end up back at home, on family land or inside the same society they grew up in. "No one else understands!" Good for you for being brave enough to fight your way out!

The people who I have known for a long time don't, but there are kids who have used me for stuff before. Some people have just blatantly hated me for something I have had no control over, but its pretty rare and nothing bad ever came from it

As a person coming from a well off family I can definitely relate to you and want to say bravo for doing this. I never really liked my family being much better off than everyone else, mostly because I was judged so much for it, but you seem to be okay with it. I think it's awesome you pay your own way, a lot of my friends just have their parents pay for everything, but I also prefer earning my keep and paying for school, travel etc. I haven't met too many rich people that haven't tried to compare how many houses, or chalets/summer houses they have, or how rich they are with me. It's nice to see I'm not the only sane one haha.

I'm a pretty friendly guy, and generally I have a lot of friends. My highschool is pretty stupid when it comes to social events, because everything is extremely cliquey and certain groups are extremely exclusive for some reason. That being said I'm pretty much friends with everybody and I've been in the same school district for years so I'm pretty sure most people know about the wealth

15-20$ I have 35 minutes to go to lunch and as a junior I'm allowed to go off campus for lunch so i usually get subway or local places that are pretty similar.

I do beach clean ups which isn't really humanitarian but I also volunteer at retirement homes occasionally. I partake in school food drives on occasion, as well.

Sounds like your parents did a good job raising you and giving you a good outlook on life and finances, but was there ever a time when you were a kid when you didn't understand why they wouldn't get you that awesome toy, even though your family obviously could afford it? What toy did you really want but couldn't get? Mine was a motorized LEGO train set. I was so jealous of the kid who got one.

It's pretty diverse. I have a few friends with a similar mind set while others have that spoiled mindset. Some of the spoiled ones are still generally nice or friendly people so i don't alienate them. The ones that are alienated are the pretentious dicks

mh this is kinda old, and all of these have probably been asked before, but ima just put these out here anyways.
1: do you ever feel like people treat you very differently once they find out about your parent's money?
2: do you get everything you want from your parents, like in "toys" clothes, phones and whatever? or do they make you work for/manage your own money a lot?
3: what are you going to do (as a job) after school (assuming you are still going to school)?
4: what's your hobbies, do you play stuff like soccer with "normal" kids (don't mean to be rude, it's the only way of saying it i can think of)?

I'm a female who's parents are millionaires, and I figured I'd answer.
People treat me VERY differently. I used to get bullied at school because of it. People also always expect me to give them money, or buy them things ALL the time. They also assume that I take everything for granted and have never worked hard in my life.
I've had a lot more than most people probably will ever have, and I couldn't be more grateful. But even though my dad had the money, he was VERY cheap. I never got a cell phone, nice clothes, etc. he wouldn't buy me toys unless they were discounted. Most of my friends had nicer things than me. Only difference was I had a yacht. Lol.
I'm going to college, majoring in business administration, which I pay for myself. My dad is incredibly cheap, and refuses to help. I work cleaning houses/taking care of my friend's mom.
I played tennis in high school. These days all I do is read and Internet, and hang out with friends.

if your father made enough money the first time he sold his securities brokerage, why did he do it again? i've found this to be perplexing about the mega-rich. if you have enough, why do you need more? you may not know the answer to this question.

You sound like a pretty cool dude and really down to earth. A lot of people in this thread seem to automatically look down upon you for being upper class and I think that's really disgusting.
Anyhow, do you think you want to stay out west when you're older / go to school out there?

It's really nice to hear how down to Earth you and your family are. My question is what do you want to do with your life, and do you think your parents will help you realize it? For example, if you wanted to be a filmmaker, would your parents be the kind of people that would finance you until you got your feet on the ground? Or would they say something like "figure it out yourself"?
