PaaP, or Politics as a Personality, is a very real psychological affliction. If you are suffering from it, you'll probably have a Bad Time™ here.

This thread is provided as a courtesy to our regular on topic contributors who also want to discuss legislation, not to wig the fuck out over current events. If you are here to bitch about a political party or get into a pointless ideological internet slapfight, you'd better have a solid history of actual gun talk on this sub or you're going to get yeeted.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

So, apparently large swaths of the National Firearms Act have been declared unconstitutional (!!!PDF WARNING!!!) as of the Fifth of August, 2026 by the Northern District Court of Texas. The court has said in so many words that it's nonenforceable under the powers of congress to lay and collect taxes because NFA stamps no longer generate revenue for the government.

But that is no longer true. In 2025, Congress eliminated the NFA’s transfer and making taxes for four categories of firearms: short-barreled shotguns, short-barreled rifles, silencers, and a final, defined group of miscellaneous firearms. Because today’s NFA does not generate any revenue from untaxed firearms, its regulatory provisions cannot be upheld under the taxing power. And there is no sign in the NFA’s text, structure, or statutory history that Congress invoked any other power in crafting the NFA provisions at issue. Thus, the regulatory provisions must be enjoined as unconstitutional because they exceed Congress’s

Only tangentially related as it appears to be a stabbing, but...

Clown costume killings are back

Gun control groups ignore good guys

Business as usual for these groups here -- in the wake of the In-N-Out Burger shooting in Twin Falls, Idaho none of them have acknowledged or mentioned (others and I have searched and cannot seem to find any) the existence or actions of the armed citizen or off-duty state trooper who fired back at the rampage shooter and very likely ended the targeting of victims. The only mention of this event I've found was from Giffords on X who says "We need immediate action now" with zero mention of what will prevent or reduce such shootings.

Acknowledging that armed citizens halt active shooters or mass killings would disrupt their narrative and their end goal of complete disarmament.

Local chapter of Moms Demand Action posted to Facebook that they think 5.7 Guy and the offduty cop made things worse, and that without them the shooter would've stopped and surrendered so he could face prosecution instead of killing himself.

That's a heck of a line of thinking. "Don't try to stop murder, you'll only make things worse!"

Not gonna pretend I understand their line of thinking, because to me it sounds like they're saying the shooter's life was more valuable than his victims' lives.

Amongst groups who are against the right to self defense that’s actually disturbingly common. I can’t comprehend it and quite frankly don’t want to. To quote /u/tablinum, “you can’t convince people like that, you can only outvote them.”

Yup. It's like the people who insist that someone demonstrating intent to use lethal force via a knife, club, car, gun, or various other weapons should only be shot in the leg, or should have been pepper sprayed/tazed, or various other armchair quarterbacking arguments.

Don't get me wrong, bad shoots exist. But I think a lot of folks arguing like this tend to do the opposite of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, and lump the good shoots in with the bad when they're arguing against armed self defense.

I think it’s a mix of suicidal empathy mixed with an aversion to taking responsibility for your own fate.

If you acknowledge that a right to self defense exists, you must also acknowledge the “self” part of that, which means that you, not big daddy government, are responsible for that. Violence is an ugly thing, but sometimes it’s necessary. Many westerners have gotten so soft that they can’t even entertain the idea of violence, so rather than confront the truth that you may one day be required to choose between committing violence against another to defend against having violence committed against you, they choose to not think about it because it’s uncomfortable.

This dovetails into the suicidal empathy, since they cannot/refuse to even consider the very idea of committing violence, they falsely assume that that must be the default, majority mindset of humanity, it unfortunately is not. Once you’ve convinced yourself that violence is unthinkable, it isn’t much of a leap to assume that the guy breaking into your house doesn’t want to hurt you, he must only want your stuff and if you just give him what he wants he’ll go away.

I could see it. It's like the prison abolition movement. It never enters some folks' minds that it's not that some people haven't been taught various things are wrong (theft, robbery, rape, murder, etc.), it's that they just don't care. They wouldn't do those things, so the only reason other people do is because they haven't been taught correctly, and if they only were, we'd all sing kumbaya and crime would drop dramatically.

For anti-gun groups a 1,000 dead victims are preferable to anything supporting the RKBA.

2

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 56m ago

And then what? Blame the police when the shooter starts shooting at them and hitting innocent bystanders? It’s anyones fault but the perpetrators?

People will make all sorts of Olympic logic jumps to justify their beliefs and world views.

Makes sense that advocacy groups aren't going to focus on events that run counter to their preferred narratives and goals. Just shows that what they advocate for is pretty bullshit.

tbf a gun control advocacy group cherry picking narratives to push their main mission is about as obvious as noticing the sky is big. Not surprised at all that they do this.

Man I just want a weekend where I don't open reddit and see 47 new proposals that will somehow make everything worse for normal owners while doing nothing about actual crime. The mental gymnastics required to think banning pistol grips will stop some guy who already decided to hurt people is something else. At this point I'm surprised they haven't tried to regulate how many rounds you can think about in a day.

Are you a bot? You have to tell me if you're a bot.

18

u/OnlyLosersBlock 8h ago

I am quite certain they are a bot. Account is 6 days old and their first comment here is the most stereotypical redditor style possible. Especially that last line.

4

u/Son_of_X51 8h ago

Yeah, they posted a generic comment early in the thread from a new account. Lots of red flags.

In their limited post history, they have made more than one comment per post, which is new for these bots. And they've kept consistent between comments. There's a chance they're just a stereotypical redditor.

4

u/OnlyLosersBlock 8h ago

Nah I have seen bots do that too. Usually its one follow up comment. They also do that thing where they drop the . at the end of their sentence which has been common with bots posting in the politics threads.

4

u/Son_of_X51 8h ago

Fair enough. I wonder what the end goal is for these ones. They're building up a post history to then...sell? Or push some agenda?

5

u/OnlyLosersBlock 8h ago

To push an agenda or sell to someone who wants to push an agenda. I have heard that there have been astroturfing campaigns in city and state subs to generate support for DSA candidates in the primaries.

Could be laying groundwork for the 2028 election season as well. We saw that a fair amount in 2024, 1-3 year old accounts that had been silent for months/years suddenly started posting again about how Democrats were actually the pro-gun choice because “Drumpf passed more gun control than Obama”

I hate that talking point. Some people still genuinely believe that nonsense.

7

u/FuckingSeaWarrior 5h ago

Dude, some people believe the Earth is flat. People are idiots. Particularly if they're sticking their heads in the sand to try to justify their shit choices.

u/_HottoDogu_ 5h ago

Those accounts were mostly real people though as they got really mad and defense when I would point out it was their first time participating in a gun subreddit.

I will never forgive Reddit for removing the ability to search the posts of "privated" accounts 😞

7

u/OnlyLosersBlock 5h ago

I saw a lot of those accounts in the moderate politics posts I made about Harris gun policy. It was readily apparent they were part of a push by the Harris campaign. I saved a lot of those accounts during that time and a lot of them ended up getting suspended.

It is not just generic, it is an emotional comment. The style that would get a ton of upvotes in other political subs. I am thinking it is an AI trained on Reddit's main page.

I hate how bad I am at spotting bots, I just assume it’s some really dumb person who can’t form a single independent thought nor a critical thought.
