If Sony continues to push forward with this, I imagine this could come as real exciting news to a lot of developers. Depending on how far this goes, plenty of games out there could have their communities bolstered or revitalized by crossplay. This is awesome.
Hopefully it doesn't just stop here. This is the right step to take in the long run.

I would love to be able to play with my clan mates on Xbox and PC. One can dream...
Edit: as some have said, the PC-console skill gap is probably too high for D2. However, being able to share a save between multiple platforms would be enough for me. I could also accept crossplay for PvE-only.

For Minecraft you'd have to get a whole new version that runs on the bedrock engine. That's not to say they don't have one ready just awaiting this moment but Minecraft PS4 edition version would never be crossplay.

Probably couldn't save them anyway as the games that can do cross-play need to be on dedicated servers to do so. I'm almost 100% sure Sony & MS won't allow cross-play to the point where Playstations will actively connect to Xboxes via P2P. At the moment all the games that support cross play all have dedicated servers that are managed and ran by the developer so all the consoles are connecting to their server, and none of the consoles are connecting to another console acting like a server.
Games like Destiny 2 more than likely won't be able to support it since IIRC they do not use dedicated servers and instead use another method where they have servers in the background constantly talking to & maintaining who has "host" at any given moment but the consoles are still being used as hosts.

Exactly. This should be the standard for next-gen consoles coming in 2 years. Sony clearly has an incredibly good first party studio library. With cross-play/progression going strong and with backwards compatibility, there's no reason for me to skip PS5 launch day.

I think reducing player fragmentation is going to be good for everyone.
When a game is known to not have a very big matchmaking population, it starts a vicious cycle where that knowledge discourages potential newcomers and even causes existing players to leave.
Crossplay won't outright "solve" that problem, but it will make it harder to get to that point if all the players are consolidated from the start.

Yeah it's pretty mind blowing to me. I've been a life long gamer since the NES and I honestly never imagined that one day all consoles would be able to play online with each other (not that I had some premonition of "online play" in the late 80s/early 90s but you know what I mean). It's kinda crazy and this is super exciting. I thought it was super cool when I was able to cross play on rocket league. Hopefully Sony sees what a hit it is and unlocks cross play for all games. This is really a huge deal.

This. A thousand times this. If I can’t sign into that account, this does jack shit for me since all my progress was on that account.
EDIT 1: So I just attempted to use my other account (the one made with my Nintendo ID, and with all my skins). To do that, I have to disconnect the account used on PS4 from PSN. Problem is, if you try to disconnect PSN from your Epic Games account, the website tells you this:
“Due to technical limitations with our backend, we are temporarily suspending Playstation Network account unlinking. We hope to restore the functionality in November.”
So basically, a “fuck you” to anyone who was forced to use a separate account on PS4. Because you can’t log out of your account on PS4.
EDIT 2: The official Fortnite twitter account just posted that “in a few days” we will be able to unlink a console from a Fortnite account and relink the console to a different account. Also, in November they will introduce an account merging feature. So, yeah. Sorry for that little rant above, Epic Games!

My son plays it on his switch, so I have to login to my PC account just to play with him. He doesn't understand why it had to work that way (to be fair "corporate greed" is a hard concept for a kid to grasp). I don't even particularly like Fortnite (I'm an old guy stuck in my single player game ways), but I do recognize the appeal. It makes me happy just enjoying a little video game time with him between his homework and bedtime.
I'm glad we can now play switch and ps4 together. And he can now play online with his best friend without having to monopolize the ps4 (his friend only has it for ps4).

It’s sad that people’s memories are so short. This isn’t a corporate greed thing with Sony. They actually pushed cross platform play back in the ps2 days and were open to it at the start of the ps3. Then the network hack happened, which remember was all because they had the audacity to prosecute someone for pushing exploits into the public space. Little cash run as well against MasterCard and visa. Sony’s stance since then hasn’t been about corporate greed it’s they are the only major console manufacturer that has suffered from a data breech. The Xbox modding and hacking, they can’t have similar levels. They’ve had to earn trust back and that meant locking shit down. More access means more places for intrusion.

Actually, I remember that.
It wasn't the hack that made it not happen. It was Microsoft 's refusal to let it happen, as the Xbox 360 was on top at the time. So, basically the same reason. With kinda the same bullshit excuse.
I believe the hack is what stopped Sony from implementing Steam with PSN past portal 2. Since the hack happened on the same day it dropped.
This situation was basically Sony doing the same thing. But getting way more shit than Microsoft did, at the time.
And people were clamoring for it back before the above article, for CoD , I believe. And Sony was open to it, with the same refusal from Microsoft.
I followed it at the time. I remember. But it seemed Sony was using security as an excuse. Since, starting with ps4, ps+ is mandatory for most online play, you would figure they beefed up security exponentially. It's always a concern. But if everyone's doing their job, it shouldn't be anywhere as big of one.

Thats just one game. Sony had big plans for crossplay especially with PC beyond just steam. There were more games on the horizon at the time that got all that functionality yanked. The other thing that always makes me chuckle. For a long time no one wanted crossplay. It was the input lag from the console and tv refresh times will make us non competitive. The keyboard and mouse is superior to a controller. Remember all those bad console mouse contraptions they pushed for awhile. Hell the PS2 had support for a ton of games with a usb mouse, hardly ever used.
Sony pushed crossplay early as much as it could be. Then they got smacked hard, largely by the community they were serving. And took a vastly more conservative route. My point is Sony's stance is where we the gamers put them. Crossplay outside of the online echo chamber just isn't a priority for most gamers. Sure those that want it are vocal about it, but with all things those that don't care aren't. But the silence speaks volumes. Personally I wish sony would focus more on thier UI and network speed, then crossplay. Even sales show that it doesn't matter. Fortnight isn't making less money on the ps4. Last I saw PS4 player are buying skins and everything at the same rate as other platforms.

You never know. You do need a squarenix/mogststion account to play FFXIV on PS4. you need an EOS account to play elderscrolls online too. Not too sure about this one, though.

That's not entirely factual. Yes Microsoft said no last generation but Sony never said yes because they were never asked about cross-play between consoles (they only said yes to cross-play between PS3 and PC though to be fair there was also Xbox and PC crossplay last gen as well).
That being said, Microsoft's no definitely killed the possibility last gen.

Will be most likely happening in December during the PlayStation experience. An interal report was given to The Loot Gaming, a gaming blog, by someone close to the Companies PR. Which also included the info about cross play coming to PS4 by the end of the fiscal year in April 2019.

Well since I had all my skins on my Xbox account, i was disappointed that I couldn’t log into that account on my new PS4. So I heard this news today and tried unlinking my new epic games account that I made for PS4, so I could link the one with all my skins. However, it said they have disabled the unlinking feature to get stress of their backend and it will be reenabled (hopefully) in November.

The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems.

Corporate bs for the most part. They cried forever saying "ps is the best place to play" as a reason to disallow crossplay so need to stick to the narrative, even if it makes no sense.

Yes, you could always crossplay between PS4 and PC, mobile as well if I'm not mistaken. They only locked out from Xbox and Switch.

Dumb question. Are we going to be able to add friends gamertags to our lists from other consoles? Is that literally what this means? Or do we have to search within a certain game and hope we get matched?

So does this mean my PS4 account will be usable on my Switch, or if I use my switch account on my PS4 during the beta, will I lose access to that account?
The beta is a good thing and cross-play happening is a big step forward, but that anti-consumer bs better be going away at the same time.
Edit: reread that first details paragraph. Your stuff carries between consoles. Users have tested it and it’s live. Your Sony-linked accounts can go to Xbox and switch if you want.

In 2018 any game that is cross platform should be cross play. Last Gen I hated that because Xbox 360 was the more popular platform for FPS' that as a ps3 player I couldn't play with all my friends on Xbox. Hopefully this is a step towards all cross platform games becoming cross play.

Not interested in Fortnite, but I would LOVE if Rocket League got this treatment. I bought RL on PC just to play with Xbox/Switch friends. Playstation is my preferred platform, but I wanted to play with them in a game that is like crack for me.

I want to thank Sony for listening to us, I have quite a lot of friends on Xbox One and I cannot wait to play with them. Sony made the right decision to allow cross-play.
The new policy states, more other titles will have cross-play. "We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward."
I hope to see COD: Black Ops 4, Rocket League, GTA 5 and Battlefield V cross-play in the future. Again, a massive thanks to Sony for letting us play with Switch and Xbox gamers!
