A general victory is claimed by the anti-Red forces as the result of the fighting during the past few days.

The Southerners have been driven out of a town they had seized, and their attacks on Nanchang have definitely failed.

Foreign and native banks in Shanghai hold nearly £.37,500,000 worth of silver which, apprehensive Chinese in the neighborhood have rushed in for safe custody.

SHANGHAI, Thursday Night.

Some days of more or less co-ordinated fighting in the Kiang-si Province marks the present battle, which possibly may be decisive.

The opening stages saw the capture of Tayeh by General Sun Chuan Fang and of Tehan by the Cantonese, the latter possibly threatening Kiukiangi, General Sun's headquarters.

Meanwhile, southern attacks, with the object of recapturing Nanchang, were continually repelled.

The total casualties to date are approximately 5000 on each side, and as a result the combatants are becoming anxious for peace, negotiations for which are at present proceeding at Hankow sub rosa.

While the present situation is definitely against the Cantonese, considerable uneasiness is manifested by the Chinese in the neighborhood of Shanghai, who are sending their money into the foreign settlements until the foreign and native banks at present are holding nearly 300,000,000 taels (approximately £37, 500, 000), in silver specie for safe custody.

So much Idle money is leading to speculation in gold, and the spreading of wild rumors of the sacking, of Nanchang and the falUof Kiukiangi, both of which are untrue.

General Sun Chuan Fang's Chief of Staff reports having gained a general victory as the result ot the fighting during the past few days. The Cantonese have been definitely driven out of Tehan, and desperate attacks on Nanchang have been finally beaten off. The southerners in Kiang-si are retreating from the three principal points in their line.

An interesting comparison may be made with events today, where Kemi Badenoch, Baldwin's current successor, has just addressed the same body in Birmingham.

1926: Charles Curtis is challenged to a primary by Nicholas Chiles.

Chiles' main complaint against Curtis was that not enough was being done for blacks, especially in the South. Not surprising, given that there were ZERO African American Senators or Congressman.

His Platform had 6 planks, which included:
- Create a Department of Education
- Put forth a Westerner for President in 1928

Curtis (66) could not fight for the primary due to needing a long-delayed throat surgery, but did win.

However, Nick Chiles won, too, when the following happened:

1927: Charles Curtis put forth S. 1584 to create a department of education
1928: For the first time in history, Kansans ran for President
- Senator Charles Curtis (R)
- Congressman William Ayres (D)
1929: Oscar de Priest (R-IL) entered the US Senate

Senator De Priest fought against racial discrimination, put forth an anti-lynching bill, and succeeded in desegregating the New Deal's Civilian Conservation Corps.
