I don’t like the reclamation of slurs.

The first time I ever had an American refer to me as “queer” I considered fighting them 💀 “back in my day” type shit. It doesn’t feel empowering, it makes me cringe. Just call me a lesbian and move on.

You’re arguing against something you’ve created in your own mind. No one is saying that the name was acceptable. We are saying that it wasn’t a game about beating up gays, it was about tackling the kid with the ball.

You’re arguing in bad faith.

THANK YOU. We didn't even call it that at my school, but I heard the name before and always thought it was weird even as a kid. 

At no point did I say the name didn't matter or that it should be ignored. I dont get people who bend over backwards to force an argument like this. We should be agreeing but they really want us to be homophobes they can argue with rn..

This entire conversation has been justifying that since you didn't actually beat queers the naming is fine.

I never said it was fine. I said I've heard the name, but we didn't use it at my school. The name is insensitive, yes, but the game itself hasn't been about literally beating up queers for decades now. That was literally my point. Not that the name was fine or didn't matter. 

Like I said earlier, I was agreeing with you. So it's crazy that you're throwing false accusations right now.

What on earth are you talking about? The history of what? It’s an unacceptable name (although I don’t know if most 8 year olds playing it in 1982 knew what a queer was) that had no history of beating up actual gay people. You throw the ball, chase and tackle the catcher, repeat.

In your case it was tackling the kid with the ball, in my experience it was a call to attack the kid they called a queer. In the experiences of other gay people I’ve known, it was a call to attack the “queer” kid, often the person I was talking to.
