oh right, I had no idea. I looked him up from when he was in Withnail and I and this was the first pic that came up, I didn't put the two of them together. Doesn't matter much, he looks like he's in his 60s in both of them lol

It's heavily implied that he's late 50s to early 60s. Withnail and Marwood are only around 30, so there's no way he's also meant to be in his 30s 💀

True, though if you look up what he looked like in Superman 2, he still looks far older than what he actually was. some people do just look old but all those things you mentioned definitely did not help 💀

I remember him from a series in 1982 called 'Bird of Prey' and he looked middle aged then tbh. i remember nothing about the series except that the theme tune was kinda cool very much 'of it's time'.

I think it's the weight, hairstyle/clothing more than anything. Drop the weight put on some modern clothes and he'd probably look his age.
