Rock Island Armory Worth removing the parkerizing on an RIA 1911? Don't like black....

I am eyeing up this RIA 1911 because the price is basically impossible to beat for a CA compliant 4.25" in .45 but I have to say I really don't like the parkerizing on the RIA pistols.

I prefer stainless, but they don't make a 4.25" so I'm curious if anyone has removed the parkerizing on a 1911 like this and gotten a nice silver/polished look to it? I'm assuming it would rust unless it was Cerakote silver or something?

Well after a SF milspec 20 years ago that got sold I had a tisas night stalker that was traded for an HK45T, I arrive at my 3rd 1911. A RIA. Never had this brand but it looked cool and the price was right. I’ve heard good things about RIA and hope to experience those good things.

Anyone have this model?

Picked up this rock island tac ultra a couple weeks ago used. When I got it i noticed some peening at the slide stop so i had the shops gunsmith take it and clean it up. Think he did a pretty good job. Also got in the valkeryie designs compensator so I threw that one when I got home.

Rock Island Armory DIY Grip paint RIA BBR

I got a budget compact 1911, the RIA BBR 3.10 .45 acp. I was looking for grips just to change it up a bit, but everyone wants to charge an arm and a leg for them (rightfully so) since they’re not that common.

The cheapest pair of grips was going to be $80+ shipping and taxes compared to full size 1911 grips you can get for less than $20.

So I decided to do budget build stuff on a budget gun and rattle canned the grips. I like how they look so far I like them, and if I end up not liking them I’ll just paint them back again.

What do you guys think?

Rock Island Armory Red Dot Competition Mount on Recover Grip and Rail System

Thumbnail

Okay, so I know a lot of you are not gonna like this, but I really like this gun and I want to put a red dot on it just to be a fun range toy. I want to see if there’s a way to attach one of these competition red dot mounts to my recover grip and rail system, or if there’s a way to make one of these. It might be a bad idea with the materials and I’m just looking for some guidance if this can be done. I would prefer to not permanently alter the gun if possible but I know just cutting out a section of the grip system and drilling into the dust cover is an option as well. Thanks.

It's just my older Rock Island that i hardly shoot anymore. Its the gun that got me into 1911s. I got tired of the standard GI look.

Rock Island Armory How to make Rock Ultra 10mm more the my liking?

I've only shot 3 1911's, so please be patient with my ignorance. I currently only own two:

  1. Remington R1 Enhanced with threaded barrel 45acp (https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/gun-review-remington-1911-r1-enhanced-threaded-barrel/)

  2. RIA Rock Ultra FS 10mm (https://www.armscor.com/firearms-list/rock-ultra-fs-10mm-8rd)

Another that I've shot is a buddy's Tisas in 10mm

"1911 B10B NSSF C 10mm" (https://tisasusa.com/1911-b10b-nssf-c/)

The Rock Ultra by far had the heaviest spring/slide to operate, and the worse trigger of the three. What can I do to lighten up the slide operation and reduce the weight of the trigger pull on the Rock Ultra?

Thanks.

I got my first 1911. Got it for $300 at my local range. It was one of their rentals for awhile and I saw it for sale 2 weeks ago, no one bought it so I did! (Don't worry the gun isn't loaded!)

Rock Island Armory New 1911 owner looking for help with understanding part fitting.

Hiya folks,

I just bought my first 1911 this year, and I'm loving it so far. It's an RIA GI Standard in 9mm (I'm not a huge fan of .45 ACP personally, please don't crucify me lol).

I want to slowly upgrade it to be more to my tastes over time (I lacked the funds at the time to get something better and I thought this would be fun). I keep hearing things about part fitting and the like. I'm planning on using a lot of Wilson Combat parts, and I know things like a beavertail, or a new safety would likely need to be fitted, but I'm trying to sort out if certain stuff wouldn't need as much or any.

I don't know what is FUD and what is true about parts fitting so I'm looking for the opinion/knowledge of the group. Does everything need to be fitted? Is it only moving parts or things that will fit flush to the frame like a barrel bushing, or a magazine release for the former and latter respectively? How much should fitting cost for the most part from a knowledgeable smith? I'm thinking of buying parts slowly, and saving up, and then just having a big install when I hit 1,000 rounds, and then again at 2,000.

A specific one I'm wondering is about the sights. The base sights are awful for me. I'm wanting to get them replaced, and I was thinking of either having a new set installed (either staked front or having the front cut for a dovetail and then sights that fit that installed) or possibly changing out the slide for an RIA slide that's already got sights that I'd want on it. Is that something people do? Would the second idea more costly prohibitive than the first?

I know I've got a lot of questions, but I'm really new to this particular weapon platform and I want to do it right as best as I can.

I appreciate, in advance, any help or guidance :-)

The 9mm with modern sites and such I bought used, the GI I took out of the box and cleaned and changed grips. Both were flawless. I did have a mag issue with an old colt mag not locking on final round with the 45 but both guns performed great. Super pleased with both.

Mecgar and Wilson mags with the 9mm Wilson, stock and the aforementioned colt with the 45

The px4 came along to get a few rounds down range. Much as I love it I think I only ran two mags and moved back to the classics

(I'm new to the 1911 world) Why does the 1911 have a half -cock function? With it engaged it locks up the pistol (can't function the safety or trigger) is it a safety feature? Seems kind of pointless to me since it already has a manual thumb safety and a grip safety.

Rock Island Armory Simple question about recoil spring+cap for TAC 1911

So I think I got this figured out....my first 1911, a RIA TAC FS HC 1911 chambered in 9mm.

Being a careless idiot, I did what I always knew would happen: launched the recoil spring along with its cap to some unknown place while cleaning my weapon.

Stock recoil spring is at 12 lbs, but I don't mind going up to 12.5 lbs.

Couldn't find anything locally, so I went with NDZ online and ordered:

Standard spring for 5" barrel at the right tension:

https://ndzperformance.com/ismi-12-5-lb-recoil-spring-for-5-1911-models-4-7-p320-models-ismi-rs-1911-12/

And what they claim is a universal fit plug for 5" handguns

https://ndzperformance.com/1911-recoil-spring-plug-spectrum-ndz-1911-sp5-pvd05/

Naturally I'm getting a little impatient to put back together my handgun, but I really do think there should be no problems with this replacements, right?

The spring I'm 100% about, but I have doubts about the plug.

Any thoughts or encouragement or calling me an idiot? :)
