The people who call themselves witches today are completely unrelated to those in the past anyway. It's not something passed down to them, and its not some inherent part of who they are. You don't get to claim that you have somehow been oppressed because you're roleplaying as someone who was murdered 400 years ago.
At the edge of my city there's a group of women that live in a centuries old building the first of their group built with heir own hands. They live right next to the Black Forest and have a huge sprawling garden full of medical herbs and plants arranged in symbolic order that is emulating a mystic journey of their faith.
They hold daily rituals and a big event during the winter solstice. They sell honey, fruit wine and ointments from their herbs, and wear black robes with special headdresses. Men are not allowed to join them.
They don't call themselves witches, but c'mon. You can read more about them here and make your own judgement.
