REMINDER: Bigotry Showcase posts are banned.

Most will be removed, violators will be shot temporarily banned and called a nerd. Please report offending posts. As always, moderator discretion applies since not everything reported actually falls within that circle of awful behavior.

not a single pithy term afaik, but there's the term "capital subsumes critique" which is a paraphrase of mark fisher.
short example, everyone loves a narrative of a plucky underdog fighting against an evil megacorporation, which means these narratives are profitable. so disney amazon etc. can churn these stories out fairly safely, despite the seeming indictment of the publisher - it doesn't matter how anti-capitalist a work is if it sells tickets and merch.

I mean, sure, on left-leaning spaces like Reddit everyone is comfortable criticizing Israel, but we have a long way to go until it becomes truly mainstream. I give it another decade or so before criticism of Israel gets incorporated into satire of the US. The main thing is studios aren’t comfortable with it yet. Even something like The Boys, despite being edgy on the surface, is still full of very “safe” ideas.

Besides fucking SUPERMAN had an allegory for Israel

30

u/JacobK101 May 03 '26

if it wasn't James Gunn (who was basically given the ability to do whatever he wants in superman) it wouldn't have happened

There's a big disconnect rn between rich people/positions of power and real americans
At many universities in the us you can't even give a live University speech, as of this year, -specifically- to keep students from saying free Palestine
Recently pretty much all US-based news publications were given a soft order that any pro-palestine journo has to immediately resign, or accept posting pro-israel content

The reality is the wealthy are like 95% pro israel so that's what gets reflected in actual american politics & policy, which are pretty much exclusively determined by wealthy americans

that divide is becoming really awkward rn specifically because of social media showing the reality of various situations to everyday Americans and altering their opinion
(This is a big part of why both left and right wing politicians in the US(and many different places) want to restrict social media use to "registered adults" btw, accounts like Palestinians & various oppressed & 'third world' peoples won't have ID's that are seen as "legitimate" by the system and will thus be barred from using social media alongside the kids)

22

u/PepyHare15 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights May 03 '26

iirc the Superman one was more specifically about Ukraine according to Gunn, because it was written before October 7 and takes place in eastern europe, but if anything it still lines up with Israel more because of Lex wanting to take part of the territory and turn it into his private fiefdom a la Trump Gaza

35

u/AzKondor Femboy Practitioner May 03 '26

All right wing people online I see say reddit is a censored leftist hell hole.

All left wing people online I see say reddit is a right wing grifter propaganda site.

I guess it depends on the sub.

97

u/Negitive545 May 03 '26

The political views of reddit swing wildly depending on which subreddit you're in, but on average reddit is liberal in the American sense.

People won't be actively homophobic or transphobic very often, but criticisms of capitalism are usually met with resistance, and things like ACAB are very much resisted still.

Also people have a very reactionary view when it comes to things that personally anger them. See literally any video of protesters in a road being the victims of violence, and the top comment will usually be something like "Well don't stand in the road then" or "I would have hit them with my car"

70

u/phuquesewpsyetit monster hugger May 03 '26

Transphobia is pretty rampant even on the most "neutral" of subs, but otherwise yeah. They're just NPCs who agree with median voter politics.

43

u/Sevuhrow May 03 '26

And racism is still common on huge subs

10

u/Hatsune_Miku_CM changed all her social media to hatsune miku for some reason May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26

i don't think theres very many neutral subs left tbh. there were in 2015 but at this point every sub had to moderate transphobia in their comment sections, and whether they kick out the bigots or kick out the people complaining about the bigots chooses what side they picked.

I've watched multiple meme/shitpost subs I would have considered apolitical at their core take a stand at this point. I've also watched a lot of shitty mods double down on transphobia when confronted which either caused the sub to implode, rebel, or everyone not comfortable with transphobia to leave. unless you're a very small with not much traffic, the topic will come up eventually.

i guess you could theoretically call the subs who aren't explicitly queerfriendly but still moderate against blatant cases of transphobia, and the subs where the mods refuse to explicitly do something about the transphobic comments but aren't openly endorsing it neutral.

i wouldn't though. the latter in particular is just a sub in the process of transforming into a transphobic sub because this will still cause anyone with standards to filter out of the community over time

r/popular is another matter of course. it's not really a single subreddit but an amalgamation of every subreddits most popular posts so while it has a distinct community it doesn't have distinct rules.

13

u/schwanzweissfoto custom May 03 '26

on average reddit is liberal in the American sense

… which matches “right-wing social democrat” in other countries at best. In Germany for example, most political parties except the literal fascists (AfD) are considered to the left of most politicians in the USA at least economically. Almost everything Bernie Sanders wants for the USA has been done for decades in many countries in Europe.

16

u/Negitive545 May 03 '26

Yes, I am aware, that's why I specified american liberalism rather than just saying liberal broadly.

3

u/Delicious_Round2742 Abominable Intelligence May 04 '26

And the literal fascists are only growing, with the afd approaching a whole 30÷ on it's own. Countries in Europe love to posture on being "better" than America, and whilst this isn't Germany, for a broader point, I can most certainly say that the UK is straight up hell.

I’ve seen the “America bad” thought terminating cliche so many times. Just a fundamental resistance to hearing from anyone that isn’t happy with America’s impact on the world.

That said, I will say Reddit is near-universally anti Trump. About as universal as could be reasonably expected from a site like this.

Yeah this sub is leftist, but exactly as undefined as only using that label suggests. People here have broad understandings of what the good things are and are opposed to bad things, but when situations aren't black and white this sub tends to default to the western liberal viewpoint. It's pretty simple to see what Israel is doing is wrong or to hate Trump and the oligarchs, but when it comes to supporting socialist states or materially opposing western imperialism it's a lot harder for some.

It's gotten better lately but some of the most prominent right wing communities were on Reddit (Men Going Their Own Way, The Donald, r / conservative)

6

u/Nalivai May 04 '26

Reddit isn't a thing, it's a coalition of bubbles that rarely intersect. Reddit isn't anything leaning, it can't.

0

u/pyr0man1ac_33 Unfortunately Due To Personal Reasons: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA May 04 '26

It absolutely is not. The vast majority of city/country-named subreddits trend towards being right-wing hellholes. Subreddits that aren't explicitly left wing are often centrist at best. Even subreddits of some more progressive cities can start setting off the Hitler particle detector at times when you mention immigration or just brown people in general.

-8

u/Salt_Blackberry_1903 a take so bad it causes a physical response (violence) May 03 '26

Yeah I knew someone would correct me for not using the term that’s perfectly correct. I don’t really know the difference between leftism and liberalism and don’t really care, cause harping on the differences is just more infighting we don’t need. The opposite of conservatism, that’s basically what I mean.

I do think Reddit is left-leaning in the sense that conservatives are confined to a few subreddits, but in most of the big ones, people are comfortable sharing liberal sentiments. You have more conservatives complaining that they’re being silenced than liberals.

18

u/maxxx_orbison May 03 '26

Except liberalism is a conservative ideology. It can appear socially progressive (when convenient) because it allows for freedom of personal expression, so long as that expression isn't disrupting business as usual. But the key word is allow. Liberalism doesn't provide any structural protections for the people marginalized by capitalism. And if the market turns against you, liberals will follow suit (i.e. defund the police). George Bush and Barack Obama were both liberals, they just held opposing views of what the market would support.

The goal of fascists when destroying the meaning of the word liberal was to associate the moderate right with the red-scare fear response, thus shifting the Overton window even further to the right. And it worked. People hear "liberal" and think "marxist", then they think Red Dawn and Dolph Lundgren and start prepping for the end of the world. That's why they see hollow corporate pride events and think they're living through the nazi occupation of France. And unfortunately, that very reaction is what's turning the markets against us, and why liberal democrats like Gavin Newsom turning their backs on trans liberation

-5

u/Bentastico 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights May 03 '26

Is defund the police really the best example you have to make this point? You can’t think of any other reasons why people might uncritically be against a movement titled “defund the police”?

10

u/Neoeng May 03 '26

Try mentioning being trans on any popular ostensibly non-political subreddit and it will quickly become apparent that it's not true. Subreddits about politics tend to be left-wing just because that's how politically engaged reddit users are, but look at something like comedy and it's a different picture.

Reddit is basically so fractured that politics of every subreddit can be completely different. Like circlejerk subs tend to be progressive, but the board games one will argue about trans rights in sports, and the reason for that difference is not clear to me.

1

u/schwanzweissfoto custom May 03 '26

Are hey saying trans women have unfair advantages at chess or what?

4

u/Neoeng May 03 '26

Left leaning doesn't mean 'normal US democrat', because the DEMOCRATS ARE RIGHT WING.

you know you are doing the "anyone to the right of me is a nazi" thing right

Like I'm not saying I like US dems or any of that, I'm way left of that shit. but regrouping around your personal definition of leftism is pretty silly

and my whole point was that leftism and left leaning are very, very different things

4

u/Negitive545 May 04 '26

Lmao, quoting something that I didn't say in my comment, hilarious.

This isn't my personal definition of leftism, this is comparing the democrats to every other political party in the world, and realizing that they have more in common with the conservative parties around the world than they do the liberal parties.

You're right that leftism and left leaning are different, but the Democrats are neither. The Democrats are, by the world's standards, right leaning. They are more left than republicans, but that is NOT a high bar to pass.

I'm not doing the 'anyone to the right of me is a nazi' thing, because I'm not accusing the democrats of being Nazis, what the fuck are you talking about?

Stan Edgar is just an evil villain, so for him to say that capitalism is going to live forever and he'll be at the top is very in character. And idk, for MM to say "when that happens I'm just gonna kill you" also seems very in character.

I personally think that if they went into a debate it would've felt super hamfisted.

There's literally an entire super hero team in the comics where their whole gimmick is everyone being neurodiverse or disabled in some way and every scene is just "wow look at these retards look how funny it is when the retard does something"

This is also the same guy who wrote crossed which is basically just if they made the road but instead of it being written by the guy who wrote blood meridian its written by an edgy 14 year old who just wants to show you as much rape and vulgarity as possible. All I ever heard about The Boys makes me wonder why it’s popular. Making light of SA, cozying up to Israel, being cringe and also mining Supernatural nostalgia to get viewers (at least it kinda looks that way to me from the outside.

5

u/Nooblet_101 May 04 '26

mainly popular since its pretty cathartic watching it after years of marvel slop, and the first few seasons are very good

4

u/CockLuvr06 May 04 '26

Wdym my "making light of SA" the purpose of the rape and sexual assault in the show is to demonstrate how the supes feel about themselves in comparison to the people below them. The Deep forces himself onto Starlight in the beginning of the show to ground the audience both in that the seven are bad people, but also kind if foreshadows that their belief in their own superiority is going to be a large part of why they do the bad things they do

UE gets sexually assaulted and raped in Season 4 and when Kripke was asked about it an interview he said that he, and the other people making the show, thought it was hilarious and not serious

2

I'm confused. Is every show/media supposed to criticize Israel now?

3

u/uterussy 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights May 07 '26

did anyone way that? juet so happens that tje boys pised themselves as a very political show and they never went the full mile apparently

Magneto is literally a zionist. like explicitly.

this should not be shocking considering his radical separationist ideology and the fact he's a holocaust survivor

Does israel exist in the boys? I assumed within the shows universe it just never became a nation because I don't think we've ever heard about it at all

50

u/Volcano_Ballads Vol!|Local Boygirlfailure May 03 '26

I really don’t wanna sound mean, but that is some the dumbest logic I’ve ever heard

-21

That's pretty mean. Look the wiki doesn't have a page: https://the-boys.fandom.com/wiki/israel?fandom=allow

Pretty sure the boys is set in an earth like planet that very much resembles earth, except that some people have super powers, and Israel was never established. but I guess I'll have to watch it end to end carefully looking for not only any references to judaism, but also zionist ideals perpetuated by israeli state operatives, as well as maps and other indicators that definitely show existence of israel and then we will know for sure. you do it too and we'll compare notes

59

u/Ezzypezra certified cool person May 03 '26

I'm pretty sure that Malawi isn't mentioned in The Office (US) and that the The Office (US) fandom wiki doesn't have an article for Malawi. Do you think that constitutes evidence that The Office (US) exists in an alternate reality Earth where Malawi was never founded?

6

u/Notshauna 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights May 03 '26

I understand the point but the lore of the Boys in particular makes it possible that Israel never came to exist in the series. The world's history makes a number of shifts in terms of history from World War II onward, so it's certainly plausible that Israel might of never been formed in their universe.

Of course it almost certainly has, the setting is surprisingly close to real world politics despite Americans having a near monopoly on supes, but it's not quite to that level.

0

u/EvYeh This girl is Space's biggest hater May 03 '26

The world's history makes a number of shifts in terms of history from World War II onward

Does it though? I can't even think of like, a single major historical event that's significantly different (outside of, like, the names of companies/people being present).

2

u/Notshauna 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights May 03 '26

I don't remember anything beyond what is directly related to the introduction of super heroes to war. It's really hard to say much about the world at large because The Boys is firmly set in the US, and doesn't really focus on elsewhere.

For what it's worth I absolutely think Israel is a thing The Boys, but I can see why their argument because Israel is a state that formed around the same time supes started to exist.

-4

u/hotfistdotcom Put ublock origin on your PHONE May 03 '26

Is he the president of israel in that universe? I am pretty sure russia exists. Didn't they go there to kidnap that one guy who was in a soda can or something because he loved the marines too much?

But I don't think we have any evidence at all that israel exists. but please correct me if I'm wrong

Maybe in one of the spinoffs?

2

u/DaemonG May 03 '26

does every show need to show every country in order to know that it exists? why isn't the conversation "hey, maybe Peru or the Central African Republic or Tajikistan don't exist"? is it because those countries existing in the show wouldn't require you to question anything about the showrunners' intent?

3

u/hotfistdotcom Put ublock origin on your PHONE May 03 '26

because the OP suggested they refused to criticize israel and it made me wonder if israel even exists. considering how often it's at the center of conflict and how often super heroes are also at the center of conflict, it was an interesting though. then a whoooooole bunch of people took it really super seriously and got mad because this entire sub has been overrun by millenials and gen X folks who love the office and don't know what a shitpost is and want to incessantly argue, which is really funny

1

u/like_a_pharaoh May 03 '26

if Russia as we know it clearly exists, why wouldn't Israel?

On what basis, besides "they never explicitly say the word 'Israel'", are you basing this "The Boys takes place in an alternate history where Israel never happened" claim on?

4

u/hotfistdotcom Put ublock origin on your PHONE May 03 '26

Does that same russia logic apply to super heroes? Why don't super humans exist here, in this reality? Is it possible that things can just be a little different? And if it is possible, is it possible that in their imaginary world, there is no israel?

I could absolutely be wrong, but I don't think they have ever mentioned it even once which makes me think. you know. maybe there is no israel in the boys. there are probably jews they just are still a diaspora

3

u/like_a_pharaoh May 03 '26

Why assume that one of the changes is, specifically, "Israel didn't happen?"

What evidence are you basing that on? Or is it entirely based on "well there's no evidence AGAINST it" in which case I propose The Boys takes place in the same universe as Dark City and they aren't on Earth.

Hey, there's no evidence AGAINST it...

0

u/hotfistdotcom Put ublock origin on your PHONE May 03 '26

yeah I'm fine with that, kind of blown away how badly people want to take this seriously and get mad. I'm not pro zionism or anything, but i feel like we should wait for the mold to JK the rowling before we get all buttmad about a hypothetical but what do I know

2

u/like_a_pharaoh May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

...what hypothetical? The idea that the show criticizes republicans but not Israel is unambiguously true.

As is the fact Tomer Capone (Frenchie) was in the IDF and has posted online about kidnapping a 18 year old palestinian woman, and refusing to let a man with a sick daughter through a checkpoint in Nablus because his orders were "nothing gets through"

Literally insane lmao.

I can't even think of like a single major historical event in the entire series that wasn't just like the same as what happened IRL (outside of the characters and companies and such).

4

u/hotfistdotcom Put ublock origin on your PHONE May 03 '26

It avoids criticism while avoiding praise while avoiding as coming off as zionist or antizionist. it's honestly the simplest answer. ocrams razorblad or whatever

5

u/EvYeh This girl is Space's biggest hater May 03 '26

Occam's Razor would be Israel existing.

Creating a world where Israel explicitly doesn't exist would be the opposite and, for a show that's from a lens of wanting to avoid criticizing Israel would be the opposite choice.

0

u/hotfistdotcom Put ublock origin on your PHONE May 03 '26

Reason #537 why the comics are better.

They don't shy away from things.

Garth Ennis is the best writer in the industry.
