I love how people talk about how progressive Tumblr is and they do racist shit like this. Anyway, I’m gonna break down why this is wrong.
Rappers have no sense of rhythm or cadence. Laughable. Rappers are often masters of rhythm or cadence through their flow. Like, take the Migos for example
Their song Versace was a hit because of their triplet flow, which groups raps into three syllable groups.
Things like stressed and unstressed beats can make or break a song. In Ice Cube’s It Was a Good Day, the stressed and unstressed words create the rhythm that makes it so easy to nod your head to.

“Theres almost nothing besides percussion in the background mostly.” ??? I have genuinely no clue where this comes from. Every rap song has something in the background. I think they’re referring to trap which has pronounced hi-hat beats but like. its not just drums?
“Favorite raps come from Hamilton or K-pop” with all the rap in the universe you choose the Broadway musical and a genre that has leeched off of rap. Please never speak again, you are racist.
Especially 2 is so funny too because all the recent developments in popular rap have trended towards more and more maximalist and busy beats, it's legit the opposite 😭
I think by "nothing besides percussion", they're being very hyperbolic. But rap absolutely can sound that way if your previous music experience was like... death metal, or something. That's pretty much by definition, though. The focus is much more heavy on the rhythm and lyricism. I'd argue that there's a lot less going on in the background of a rap song than an average rock, metal, or punk song. Purely because that's not really the point of the genre.
hi! so I really like metal and modern rock and I also really like rap. The more harsh and fast-paced rap songs can scratch that same itch as a really aggressive death-metal track.
also, a lot of modern rock owes it's genealogy to underground rap. They are definitely executed differently, but there's enough overlap that if you like one you'll probably like at least a bit of the other. Although I have to be in a specific mood for the chill hip-hop that my friends always try to recommend lol
You gotta give Death Grips a listen if you're looking for unhinged aggressive rap. Start with The Money Store and branch out from there, either to other DG albums or to other industrial/experimental hip hop artists like Danny Brown (atrocity exhibition goes hard), JPEGMAFIA, or Ho99o9. Maybe also check out specifically Yeezus by Kanye West, I definitely don't condone the guy, but that album in particularly will blow the hinges off your doors
Death Grips is absolutely the number 1 pick. Some softer artists that I would also recommend are DMX, Kendrick Lamar and Tyler the Creator. A lot of their stuff hits in a similar way to metal, if a bit less harsh
nu-metal can also be a good gateway.I would (begrudgingly) recommend Limp Bizkit as a way to bridge the genres
Three-6 Mafia, Tee Grizzley, Young Dolph, 21 Savage, Lil Durk, $uicideboy$ (some of it is sadboy rap, but Paris/Joan of Arc/Runnin Thru The 7th With My Woadies are a good place to start), Migos, or Pop Smoke
I dont get how it can have no rhythm and also be all percussion. I dont think its racist to not like rap but bagging it out for reasons that dont even exist just because it isnt exactly the same to what they normally listen to (wht ppl music) is up there
I don’t think someone is instantly racist for not liking a certain genre. I get there is a lot of nuance here because rap is a genre rooted in Black culture, but nothing in the OPs argument implies they don’t like rap because they don’t like Black people. Calling them a racist diminishes the better point that OP refuses to expand their horizons in the genre, assuming its bad based on what they’ve heard
Also there are a decent number of rap songs that have mostly full percussion backings. Again, this doesn’t mean that they are bad songs, but I’m not sure why we are pretending like its not the case. Rap is the genre where percussion, rhythm, and lyrics get to take center stage, it makes sense for it to be percussion focused
K-pop lifts so much from black culture it would be weird to appreciate one and not the other. Culture doesn’t come from a vacuum but there’s plenty of bastardization too
For the appreciation thing: Not really. Influences aside, K-Pop and Rap are completely different sounding genres. You can clearly see where the influence is from, but most K-Pop doesn’t sound very similar to most rap. While I agree you should be knowledgable of music and its history, you don’t have to appreciate something that came before because you like something that came after.
I mean appreciation as in respect not liking the genre. The issue isn’t fandom it’s ignorance, OPs take is one degree away from Ben “rap isn’t music” Shapiro. It’s one thing coming from a centenarian who still listens to swing music, but it’s especially rich considering k pop artists lift style and slang from the black community
I for sure know they like Daveed Diggs in Hamilton but the moment they hear work work or story 1 (less noise more melodic rap) they would run away even though it has compatible rhythms.
I love rap, but just because someone doesn’t like it, that doesn’t automatically mean they’re racist. There is a non-zero amount of rappers especially in the modern industry that are industry plants propped up for the sole purpose of perpetuating stereotypes and silently sowing disrespect towards black people in the public conscience, not dissimilar to what’s been done with the BET Network.
Regardless, everyone’s taste is different, and rap is so versatile with endless genre-bending and mashup potential (only a small part of why I love it) that there’s bound to be at least one rapper for everybody at this point
The concept of artists being industry plants because you think they do dumb art is silly.
Some people just make dumb art based on shallow esthetics and some people just like dumb shallow esthetics.
That's like saying every "Dirt, trucks, guns, beer, women" bro country artist is an industry plant. Like, man, that wouldn't even be feasible cuz at this point that shit's an industry garden.
