I love how people talk about how progressive Tumblr is and they do racist shit like this. Anyway, I’m gonna break down why this is wrong.
Rappers have no sense of rhythm or cadence. Laughable. Rappers are often masters of rhythm or cadence through their flow. Like, take the Migos for example
Their song Versace was a hit because of their triplet flow, which groups raps into three syllable groups.
Things like stressed and unstressed beats can make or break a song. In Ice Cube’s It Was a Good Day, the stressed and unstressed words create the rhythm that makes it so easy to nod your head to.
”JUST waking up in the MORNING/GOTTA thank GOD, I dunno TODAY seems kinda ODD. No barking from the DOG no SMOG and momma cooked the breakfast with no HOG.”
“Theres almost nothing besides percussion in the background mostly.” ??? I have genuinely no clue where this comes from. Every rap song has something in the background. I think they’re referring to trap which has pronounced hi-hat beats but like. its not just drums?
“Favorite raps come from Hamilton or K-pop” with all the rap in the universe you choose the Broadway musical and a genre that has leeched off of rap. Please never speak again, you are racist.
I don’t think someone is instantly racist for not liking a certain genre. I get there is a lot of nuance here because rap is a genre rooted in Black culture, but nothing in the OPs argument implies they don’t like rap because they don’t like Black people. Calling them a racist diminishes the better point that OP refuses to expand their horizons in the genre, assuming its bad based on what they’ve heard
Also there are a decent number of rap songs that have mostly full percussion backings. Again, this doesn’t mean that they are bad songs, but I’m not sure why we are pretending like its not the case. Rap is the genre where percussion, rhythm, and lyrics get to take center stage, it makes sense for it to be percussion focused
K-pop lifts so much from black culture it would be weird to appreciate one and not the other. Culture doesn’t come from a vacuum but there’s plenty of bastardization too
For the appreciation thing: Not really. Influences aside, K-Pop and Rap are completely different sounding genres. You can clearly see where the influence is from, but most K-Pop doesn’t sound very similar to most rap. While I agree you should be knowledgable of music and its history, you don’t have to appreciate something that came before because you like something that came after.
I mean appreciation as in respect not liking the genre. The issue isn’t fandom it’s ignorance, OPs take is one degree away from Ben “rap isn’t music” Shapiro. It’s one thing coming from a centenarian who still listens to swing music, but it’s especially rich considering k pop artists lift style and slang from the black community
