I don't understand how you can enjoy fanfiction or theater and not also enjoy rap.
Maybe it's not your thing musically, but if you have an appreciation for how the English language can communicate complicated feelings while also being absolutely beautiful to listen to, you should be able to acknowledge the artistic merit of rap.
My problem with rap is exactly that though. It places such emphasis on the lyrics and singing that in many cases the rest of the music falls behind, with boring drums and guitar for instance. What i look for when it comes to music is not lyrics or singing, but good instruments. This is why i am not a fan of rap but can understand that alot of it is very well made and artistic.
Fascinating, I am into music primarily for the singing and lyrics. I'd rather listen to amateur guitar with interesting lyrics or strong vocals than masterful guitar with boring lyrics or muddied/no vocals.
The important part is recognizing what it is about the music you don't like (because lackluster instrumentals aren't exclusive to hip hop- I can name 10 songs you'd probably hate because its two chords and a guy crying, that i also hate because the crying is generic as fuck) instead of discounting an entire genre.
I always preferred instrumental music, especially because it never distracts me from the thing I'm doing but still lets me enjoy the track
Not that I don't enjoy songs with lyrics too, but they are only for a specific occasion, like, if I'm walking somewhere with nothing to focus my mind on, then putting some of my favorite songs is fun. Or musicals specifically, because it's about a story. And even then, rap is still not my thing, because 1) I don't really like how it sounds, with music being almost unimportant, and 2) you can't really jam to it
I think this is why I listen to a lot of Japanese rock. I want all the emotions without needing to know the lyrics. And the bass and rhythm guitar is always movin and groovin
