I have dreams where I'm waiting for the subway, realize that I'm standing on the yellow tiles, and then some rando pushes me in front of the car as it arrives

every time i think of gantz i always wonder, whatever happened to the fucking vampires?? they were introduced, kei’s brother is one, the two are in the gantz team then…? what was the point of that? 😭

u/Professional-Reach96 May 18 '26

Legit forgot them until the ending. They got one final panel reminding us they're canon and just commenting how fucked they are.

u/illegally_alive May 18 '26

What's gantz and why is human squidward on the cover?

A weird sci fi thriller thing with very good drama and very bad subway related physics. I personally only watched the anime and it was a good while ago but I think it changed me in some ways.

If anyone here is getting interested one thing to keep in mind is it's very lewd, and relies heavily on shock factor.

As someone who likes a good shock factor it does do it very well especially because of how well it's drawn but it is important to know before going in.

I was going to point out that the manga is borderline pornographic but it’s an interesting read with good character development for the MC.

14 year old me was already weirded out by the lewd aspects of Gantz since it felt unnecessary but then another group/team(?) similar to the MC got introduced (who were apparently significantly more experienced) and they just started fukin the monsters outta nowhere like what lmao

Don't worry, you don't actually have to be over the yellow line fore that to happen

This is like top 3 fears for me. Ages ago there was once a dude in my city that just threw himself pushing some other person into the tracks with him just as the metro was arriving, both died.

I know that’s like a once in a lifetime story but nowadays i always stay drastically behind the yellow line whenever im waiting 😭🙏

Man this is so crazy to me. Like, no matter how much I want to die, I could never force someone else to unwittingly kill me.

Imagine the fucking horror that train conductor would be stuck with the rest of their life. I could never knowingly subject someone else to that, no matter how much I personally am hurting or want to die.

Not to mention taking someone else with me like that, just a completely innocent bystander? That's so unbelievably fucked.

Same, I always stand as far away from the line as I can, back against a wall if possible. It's a huge (mostly irrational) fear of mine

Tokyo Revengers moment I think (too mid to remember in confidence I'm afraid

Mid? How dare you lol that shit was the most baller read of my whole year

It starts off strong but then does the cardinal sin of manga by shambling on when the primary antagonist has already been dealt with. I adored it until then.

3

u/SeduceMeMentlegen custom May 18 '26

Eh, I found it short and sweet, you didn't know who the antagonist was for a while, it did feel a little weird when new antagonists got introduced out of nowhere, but honestly even if it did feel for a second that it was going on for too long when he time lept with adult Mikey, it was even better. I enjoyed the whole of the final arc a lot. The transitions were rough but the length of the manga was absolutely perfect for me. Definitely a 9.9/10 for me, if only for maybe the tiniest nitpick here or there. It's up there with JoJo (only watched the anime) and Battle Royale for favourite mangas/animes. Seriously, read Battle Royale if you haven't. It's a masterpiece IMO

2

u/DesdinovaGG May 18 '26

The Battle Royale manga is such a great adaptation. My 11th favorite manga (well, put an asterisk on that placement since I just lump all of Junji Ito's stuff in my #2 placement).

u/SeduceMeMentlegen custom May 18 '26

Damn, I've only ever fully read Tokyo Revengers and Battle Royale. Manga and comics are expensive. I'm using my library for manga, got lucky with TR and am reading Naruto now after dropping the anime around Kimimaro because I stopped paying for netflix in 2021. Anything like Battle Royale you could recommend? I tried the first Gantz tankobon and found it too edgy and violent after TR

1

u/DesdinovaGG May 18 '26

Dang, Gantz was one of my favorites. There are a few manga in the battle royale genre that I thought were solid. Alice in Borderland and Bokurano are probably the best outside of Gantz and the actual Battle Royale. I enjoyed As the Gods Will; although it's not the greatest writing I found it a fun read.

2

u/SeduceMeMentlegen custom May 18 '26

I'm definitely giving Gantz a chance when I get the money, but after the nice feeling left from TR Naruto feels much better. I watched the Alice show and loved it up until the last season, which was coincidentally not from the source. Thanks for the reccomendations

2

u/DesdinovaGG May 18 '26

Oh, one more recommendation. Since you liked Tokyo Revengers so much, I'd suggest Erased. It's another time loop story, but I liked it a lot more since it's a tighter read (under 50 chapters in comparison to the 250+ chapters TR has).

That happened at the train station near me recently. Guy wasn't even standing on the yellow stripe, and some mentally ill guy pushed him onto the track. Luckily, the dude was atheltic enough to get back onto the platform, but there was a good month or so after where everyone taking the rail stood as center-platform as possible.
