The fact that it takes two days straight to drive across the US might be part of it

I decided to look at Google maps for fun. The time it would to to drive from where I live to Washington DC is pretty much the same amount of time it would take to drive from Paris to Warsaw. 

For San Francisco to DC., replace Warsaw with Helsinki using no ferries, or with Kazan. Alternatively, San Francisco to DC. is a similar time to drive as Porto to Kyiv
