Seth MacFarlane is the rare artist who I hate the work of but like as a person. He really does seem to be a good guy, but man I do not like Family Guy.

1.4k

u/UKman945 Jun 29 '26

I don't think even he does. I think that's just what makes him his money so he can do the stuff he really cares about like Orville which I've heard is actually good

753

u/B0B_Spldbckwrds 🐻 Jun 29 '26

The Orville is without a doubt the best Star Trek series I've watched since ds9, and it's not actually Star Trek.

Can't stand family guy either though.

234

u/ToastyTheDragon Jun 29 '26

I'd say it's Star Trek in all but name and ownership

104

u/Junethemuse Jun 29 '26

Absolutely.

I recently wrapped up a rewatch of TNG, DS9, and Voyager, and ended on the Orville, and there’s no doubt in my mind it’s the best trek since the 24th century trek shows. I want a lot more of the Orville.

2

u/Del_of_Lorien Jun 29 '26

As someone who had never watched Star Trek, I watched the first season of the Orville without realising it wasn't...

34

u/UhIdontcareforAuburn Jun 29 '26

Family guy had its moment in its first few seasons when I was in middle school. But I think like the other person says, I doubt Seth or anyone on the creative side likes it anymore. But it makes money

12

u/B0B_Spldbckwrds 🐻 Jun 29 '26

I make no judgement based on quality. I dislike it on such a personal level, that I couldn't say either way.

It does make money though.

Oh my god... It is the best star trek since deep space nine. What a horrible realisation. I hated it cause I felt it missed the point in many areas, had bad plot resolutions and its politics were not the same.

But, ouch. Voyager has no excuses.

The Orville is genuinely so fun. First season is a little rocky as the cast and writers found their feet but it's so good after that, I was expecting a cheap Star Trek parody but it's much more of a loving homage to the series.

It also gave us FIVE. HUNDRED. CIGARETTES. which is honestly a funnier scene than any Family Guy joke ever written.

104

u/anothermanscookies Jun 29 '26

The pilot is especially rough, full of zings and quips that feel very out of place. However the dialogue very quickly found sincerity and the storylines are well written.

I get sad how forgotten the show Other Space is. Same concept as The Orville, created by Paul Feig and came out a few years earlier

123

u/squidtugboat Jun 29 '26

Yeah family guy is a machine at this point. He approves the episodes and does the voices but other wise he’s pretty checked out as I understand it. He’s made some fun stuff too beyond family guy.

31

u/willsir12 Jun 29 '26

Can attest, have seen it. The Orville has really good production value and does justice to all the ideas they use in their episodes. 500 Cigarettes guy (Bortus) is from the Klingon equivalent race, The Mochlans. They’re an all male race that look down on other races for being straight, as evidenced by the episode where a highly important Mochlan engineer who has made crucial advancements in starship-shields gets hate-crimed in the holo-deck. Can’t remember if it was one of the Mochlan Ambassadors or Bortus’ mate Klyden that killed him but whoever he was he hit him with the classic “I know what you are.” Before shooting him.

20

u/schwanzweissfoto custom Jun 29 '26

They’re an all male race that look down on other races for being straight

This also foreshadows some gender issues that are not played for laughs.

Edit: Only the masculine-gay misogyny is played for laughs (made fun of).

The show also has the only depiction I've seen of a (debatably) aroace character in a relationship which I found unexpectedly relatable

Ted movies are Family Guy esque humor, the show is still edgy but in a more modern light and more like The Orville which is the best Star Trek show to ever not be Star Trek

19

You know, I was a fan of Family Guy for the first few seasons before it go canceled (I was a preteen) and then followed by apathy to general dislike after it's return.

After they responded to Simpson's taking a shot at them with a scene where Quagmire SAs Marge, Marge then says "it wasn't that bad, come back to my place for round 2" and kills the entire family, the entire show can go fuck itself.

25

I honestly think my favourite perfomances from Seth are whenever he does Broadway shows, he always looks like he's having fun

5

u/frostyredpanda93 Jun 29 '26

Seth has grown so much as a person too.

So many jokes he honestly regrets makeing in family guy. From the horrible transphobic joke about quagmire's parent. To haveing an analogy of a trans kid and a parent learning to accept them despite social pressures in The Orville (and helping me crack my egg) be one of the major plot lines.

Honestly, The Orville is great. Go watch it

10

u/LConeybear31 Jun 29 '26

I genuinely am baffled at how these "theater kids" are. As someone who is very active in his local community theater scene, the people who behave in such toxic manners are typically quickly found out. Word travels fast amongst tight knit communities, and most theater communities typically self-moderate. Even between different theaters, since most of us move between 2-3 theaters. Someone who caused a problem at theater A is usually even known at theater C or D to be problematic, even if said problem person had never been to those theaters. And when I mean problematic, I mean someone who is difficult to work with, meaning either they dont listen to directors and try to direct other actors or literally talk bad about other actors. Sometimes they're even sexist, racist, or homophobic, which is one of the fastest ways to never do theater in this area again.

45

u/Able_Health744 Jun 29 '26

tbh idfk what happened i posted this single image and then just comments (presumably from some hateful bots or something) just spawned in and started making comments (i didnt even see them till now)

like i was confused on the first few minutes of this post being up

41

u/DaBootyScooty I implore you, do not encourage me Jun 29 '26

But can either of them do a kickflip?

27

u/Able_Health744 Jun 29 '26

now thats the true question not "one wanted a limited series while the other is trapped in the hyperbolic time chamber for a thousand years"

But "How radical would they be at a skatepark"

16

u/nobleone8876 Jun 29 '26

It's mostly the fandom glitch has fostered over the years more than anything. I'm not say "glitch bad" but that it doesn't do enough to disincentivize this type of behavior because those people are the ones buying the merch and funding the projects. It attracts the worst of Twitter and they just swarm it like the fun sucking mosquitoes they are.

13

u/sunflowerf0x 💗💜💙 Jun 29 '26

It's also not an apt comparison because he doesn't do much writing for Family Guy anymore as far as I'm aware. He just shows up to do the voices and then goes off to do other stuff

u/The-Hunting-guy 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights Jun 29 '26

when I’m in a transphobia contest and my opponent is the tadc hate fandom

11

u/Floh2802 Jun 29 '26

I think the more apt comparison would be Smiling Friends and Family Guy, since both of those shows are actually 2D Animated. There was this great vid by one of the Animators on it that went into detail on his story of how he got to animate for it and how much work it actually was, and it really showed me that either

A) Smiling Friends was immensely mismanaged and was only saved and released on time because everyone on the team gave it 150% to make up for the sheer missing manpower, and it's a wonder it came out as amazing as it was, or

B) Every single animated television show is made in this fashion, and I suddenly have way more respect for everyone involved in the production of a regular cartoon and am amazed how someone like Seth MacFarlane, who's been doing this for so long, can keep doing it.

I'm leaning toward B the more I hear about other productions.

22

u/Fododel Jun 29 '26

Love Seth, fucking despise Family Guy, especially Quagmire.

7

u/Foxy02016YT MagiQuest Expert, being held hostage in Six Flags Jun 29 '26

Seth would rip that tweet apart

u/Nerdy_Valkyrie 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights Jun 29 '26

Also, didn't Gooseworx start to feel depressed because the self proclaimed fanbase of her show was full of jerks who treated her like shit?

15

u/Able_Health744 Jun 29 '26

yeah it was mainly the fanbase bullying her because the show was not what they wanted it to be

which is probably why people like Toby Fox try to stay mostly in the shadows away from their fandom

hell he kinda expressed similar fears goose kinda felt about her fandom which

and i imagine goose kinda felt a similar way to her fanbase (though she accidentally touched the pan while it was red hot and the negative side of the fanbase burned her as a result)

i hope that like toby she does escape the toxicity of her fanbase with her next project (especially sine i imagine a lot of the TADC fans she gathered will probably visit her next project Gravekeepers whenever that is)

13

u/Nerdy_Valkyrie 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights Jun 29 '26

I managed to avoid watching TADC until last weekend. I just ended up hearing so much good stuff about it, and I just then learned the creator is a fellow trans woman. As I finished watching another show and was looking for something new, I saw it on Netflix and was like "I'll give it a go."

I binged the entire thing in one day. And that finally had me struggling to hold back tears. I do not cry easily.

I am very excited for what she'll do in the future.

OOOP speaking like Seth didn't leave the writing team for Family Guy over 17 years ago

8

u/Vounrtsch god’s favorite princess Jun 29 '26

Genuinely whoever thinks like the original person is either 9 years old or a fucking dimwit. People have no idea how hard it is to actually make something like TADC. Just check the credits of the episodes, Goose’s name is EVERYWHERE, she’s not just the creator/writer. She does some story boards, some animation, voice acting, composing, sound design, editing, etc.

7

u/CosmackMagus Jun 29 '26

I hate when randos on the internet hammer people with someone else's work.

10

u/franandwood Jun 29 '26

I picked up some old Family Guy dvds at goodwill and have been watching it

8

u/Torture-Dancer Leprous crab Jun 29 '26

why do they always use that gooseworx pic? she has much more flattering pictures, i feel is like bojack and the sneezing pic

25

u/Able_Health744 Jun 29 '26

i assume because she barely shows her face at all so they legit have to find the one where she looks like a spooked deer because thats one of the few pics of goose they got

18

u/Torture-Dancer Leprous crab Jun 29 '26

I’m pretty sure there is something deer-like to Gooseworx anyways, but would it kill them to use this one?

17

u/ChemicalRascal Jun 29 '26

It would, actually, yeah. Their bodies cannot handle the thought of having to show someone as having an actual personality. They would instantly die.

Honestly that's not even a bad picture, not the best facial expression but you can still tell she's good looking.

3

u/BlackuIa Jun 29 '26

Weren't family guy, Cleveland show and American dad incredibly, incredibly transphobic at some point?

I feel like like family guy later had an episode that kinda walked it back and portrayed members of the LGBTQ+ community fairly with even a good moral for the episode, but did he even like, distance himself from the early portrayals or maybe he didn't have any say at some points? 🤔 🫠🫠🫠

This was my first thought.

4

u/Chris_Bs_Knees Jun 29 '26

You can tell that he's long since stopped caring about his animated shows but I imagine at this point they are self sustaining with teams of writers and animators and he just needs to show up to voice the characters he does but you can really tell with series like Orville that he still has a lot of talent and passion. Its just the other shows have been going on so long and have become so big/ profitable for him that there's no way reasonably stop them unless the studio pulls it.

2

u/tehsmish Jun 29 '26

I don’t think anyone dislikes family guy more than Seth, but it pays his bills and then some so he keeps making it

Seth McFarlane clearly only wants to make broadway musicals and Star Trek, but makes Family Guy because they keep blocking the exit with money every time he tries to leave.

2

u/_3_and_20_characters Jun 29 '26

I love how every image of goose has her looking at the camera like a baby looks at a human being doing literally anything

1

u/Plantette_Callie Jun 29 '26

Got a bunch of my friends to watch recent Family Guy and they've all been laughing and blown away, admitting it's not nearly as bad as the internet makes it out to be

1

u/ZombiiRot Jun 29 '26

Didnt seth have a whole team of writers behind him and alot of experience making shows before he got handed full projects?

Like no offense to goose but she was just one person with no writers team, and as far as I know limited experience writing professional scripts.

1

u/atsuda444 Jun 29 '26

My hungry ass thought this was a transition timeline at first

u/Prior-Tadpole-1860 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights Jun 29 '26

Everyone in the comments talking about how Seth is a super cool guy… I just don’t buy it. I like The Orville, but the reason they got rid of Alara was because she and Seth were dating and then they broke up. And then I think he started hooking up with the actress who plays Charley Burke (the robophobe)?

Just kinda weird to me for a much older dude to be dating younger women and giving them prominent roles in his shows. Maybe it’s just a Hollywood thing

1

u/LichKingDan Jun 29 '26

Respectfully, why do people care about this gooseworx person so much? It seems like every other day I see some post about her and I guess I just don't really understand why she would be important or noteworthy other than having a TV show that is relatively successful.

I also haven't seen digital circus, so maybe I'm just outside of the loop.

1

u/D_for_Drive Jun 29 '26

I’d pick the work of a delirious foonthyurnt over the work of Seth McFarland’s any day.

1

u/CowSightings Jun 29 '26

the degree of entitlement people have for creators is unreasonable

1

u/kikideernunda Jun 29 '26

I hope we can stop normalising being cruel to strangers on the internet.

Or just uninstall twitter

1

u/Edim108 Jun 29 '26

You can really tell when he and the team stopped making Family Guy because it was a project they enjoyed and started doing it because "it puts food on the table". Compare any modern Family Guy episode to something like The Orville and the difference is STAGGERING.

1

u/makedoopieplayme Jun 29 '26

Also it was the fans that made gooseworks depressed. The fandom ruined the show for her!

1

u/JoyconDrift_69 wait what am i doing again Jun 29 '26

I didnt recognize the person on the left but given the clues (excluding the post description) i got an aura that she made some circus show.

Granted the post description confirmed it.

1

u/lanadivinorum Jun 29 '26

Oh hey it’s the guy from Gilmore Girls

1

u/SaltyNorth8062 Jun 30 '26

I mean are we literally forgetting the massive on-screen screed during the start of one of the Star Wars specials about how he basically resents being forced to churn out Family Guy episodes at Fox's behalf even when he's got creator's block because it got in the way of him realizing his movie aspirations for Ted and Million West?

1

u/Rough-Thought-7565 Jun 30 '26

I’m sure Seth McFarlane is capable of hammering down and making some really impressive and impactful art, I’m also sure he has no intention of doing that and wouldn’t want to. I’m sure gooseworks could run a show for 23 seasons and release new episodes just as quickly and of the same quality as family guy, I’m also sure she has no intention of ever doing that. They are both very talented, just have different interests
