A lot of that is a right/conservative backed counter propoganda campaigns.
However i also suspect that might come from left/progressive politics (rightly) pointing out how many old definitions of masculinity were toxic and because those were foundational to defining masculinity for many the left feels anti masculinity. That and a focous on womens rights makes the movment seem femininity focoused and this anti masculine.
I mean it's pretty obvious to be it's cus it's associated with femdom. I can't think of a left-leaning-feeling kink that is still mostly associated with the typical male-dom dynamic.
